Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Theatre, Vol. 2 of 2 Of the most important personages in this list we have already spoken, except Mrs. S. Powell. This lady's early history is unknown to us. She came to this country as Miss Harrison in the first company that played in the Federal Street theatre, Boston. She was an elegant woman, and a good actress. She was exemplary in her social duties, and, if now living, enjoys competency and all the fruits of prudence 'and virtue. She filled respect ably the highest lines of tragedy and comedy, and will long live in the memories of the public of Boston, as well as in the affections of those who knew her private worth. Mr. Villiers was the low comedian of the com pany, and an actor of force and merit. He of course could only expect to play such charac ters as the manager thought unworthy of his attention; as must have been the case in respect to every portion of the drama where Hodgkin son was the director, and in the greater part of every branch he had no competitor in this country at that time. Moreton was dead. Cooper, far his superior in tragedy, was yet negligent, and his great excellence confined to a few characters. Fennell's walk was very confined, and his pursuits irregular. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theatre, Vol. 2: A Monthly Review and Magazine; February to July, 1879 But apart from the difficulties obviously suffered by many of the dramatic critics when they strive to accomplish a task beyond their usual line, first-night criticism of this order is to be deprecated because the struggle to accomplish it, made by any except the readiest and most practised writers, generally ends in an approach towards the baneful old system of dramatic reporting. The writer who cannot at the moment steady himself for analysis of the motive of the new play, or for cool appreciation of the acting, naturally betakes himself to picturesque gushing over the inten tions of the management, over the dresses, the scenery, and even over the audience. Something like a column is to be filled some how; if it cannot be filled with criticism, it is filled with descriptive reporting. Descriptive reporting has its value as a journalistic art, and when it is good of its kind it may doubtless be applied usefully to theatrical as well as to other subjects. But surely the proper time for it to appear in important columns, even when at its best, is emphatically not the morning after the first night. When at anything but its best, this kind of criticism is so bad that it is always unreadable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive introduction to the analysis of fictional worlds in a set of fifteen arts, including theatre, opera, figurative ballet, mime, audio drama, figurative drawing/painting, figurative sculpture, strip cartoon, animation, puppet theatre, still photography, photo-novel, silent movie, cinema and TV drama. Due to their extreme differences, the combination of different arts in the description of a single fictional world, and the translation from one medium to another, are considered problematic. While such differences do not concern fictional creativity, which applies the same poetic and rhetoric rules whatever the medium, it is widely accepted that the problem lies in the extreme differences between the mediums of description. In contrast, this study explores their common grounds. These arts are iconic in nature, and if 'iconicity' is re-defined in terms of imprinting images on matter and mediation of language, and as reflecting the common roots of these mediums in a preverbal mode of imagistic thinking, therein is an explanation of their possible combination and translation from one medium to another without impairing the receivers' reading, interpreting and experiencing capacities. Eli Rozik analyses numerous fictional worlds in all these arts, produced during the last 2,500 years of artistic creativity, especially in theatre, art and cinema. This book presupposes that principles underlying the generation of descriptions of fictional worlds by the theatre medium, as proposed in two earlier works (Generating Theatre Meaning and Fictional Thinking), also apply to all the iconic/fictional arts. The text-book format of the volume has been purposefully designed to address the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students, suiting the structure of university courses and providing all necessary information to access the images/artistic works discussed in the volume via the web and Google. This inter-art journey from theatre theory to the arts is compelling reading for all those involved and engaged in artistic creativity.
