Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arising from the activities of the Centre for Seventeenth-Century French Theatre, this volume proposes a selection of eighteen essays by internationally renowned scholars aimed at all those who value and work with the theatre of seventeenth-century France, whether in teaching, research or performance. Frequently seeking out the interfaces of these areas, the essays cover historiography (including that of opera), the theory and practice of textual editing, visualizing - in terms of both theatre architecture and the significance of playtext illustration -, approaches to study and research (including the most recent applications of computer technology), and performance studies which relate the classical canon to contemporary French and other cultures. Always suggesting new directions, challenging the epistemological bases of the very concept of French classical theatre, the essays provide a snapshot of scholarship in the field at the dawn of a new millennium, and offer an ideal opportunity to reassess its past whilst looking to its future. blurb van Faux 205 - Tomlinson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Wilbur's translations of the great French dramas have been a boon to acting troupes, students of French literature and history, and theater lovers. He continues this wonderful work with two plays from Pierre Corneille: Le Cid is Corneille's most famous play, a tragedy set in Seville that illuminates the dangers of being bound by honor and the limits of romantic love; The Liar is a farce, set in France and dealing with love, misperceptions, and downright falsifications, which ends, of course, happily ever after. These two plays, together in one volume, work in perfect tandem to showcase the breadth of Corneille's abilities. Taking us back to the time he portrays as well as the time of his greatest success as a playwright, they remind us that the delights to be found on the French stage are truly ageless.

Book excerpt: Volume 2 of A Comparative History of Literatures in the Iberian Peninsula brings to an end this collective work that aims at surveying the network of interliterary relations in the Iberian Peninsula. No attempt at such a comparative history of literatures in the Iberian Peninsula has been made until now. In this volume, the focus is placed on images (Section 1), genres (Section 2), forms of mediation (Section 3), and cultural studies and literary repertoires (Section 4). To these four sections an epilogue is added, in which specialists in literatures in the Iberian Peninsula, as well as in the (sub)disciplines of comparative history and comparative literary history, search for links between Volumes 1 and 2 from the point of view of general contributions to the field of Iberian comparative studies, and assess the entire project that now reaches completion with contributions from almost one hundred scholars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corneille's Le Cid This edition of Le Cid aims especially at emphasizing its literary significance. For this reason it contains the articles written by Corneille in answer to his critics, and in which he judges his own work. The text follows that of the Marty-Laveaux edition (in the Hachette series of "Les Grands Ecrivains de la France"), reproduced from Corneille's last revision of 1682. In volume iii. of this edition may be found the variants to the play, the lines of Castro's Las Mocedades del Cid which were more particularly imitated by Corneille, and an analysis of the Spanish drama. The history of the French stage after 1550 and previous to 1630 is considered at length in E. Rigal's "Alexandre Hardy" (Paris, 1889). To understand the literary bearing of Le Cid and Corneille's dramatic ideas at the time, one should also consult the Spanish original (Las Mocedades del Cid, primera parte, edited by E. Merimee, Toulouse, 1890). For historical data concerning the hero and his surroundings there is nothing more recent than R. Dozy's "Recherches sur l'histoire de l'Espagne" (third edition, Leyden, 1881). I can find no reliable account of the Cid's family.
