Book excerpt: "The classic French drama began with Corneille's The Cid in 1636 and ended with Beaumarchais' Figaro's Marriage in 1784. Among its supreme masterpieces are Molière's The Misanthrope (1666) and Racine's Phaedra (1677), while only slightly less lustrous are Lesage's Turcaret (1707) and Marivaux' The False Confessions (1737). All six of these plays are contained in the present volume. Known hitherto only via Da Ponte's Italian libretto, Figaro's Marriage has been specially translated for The Classic Theatre by Jacques Barzun. The other five plays have been tackled by a team of distinguished American poets. Richard Wilbur's The Misanthrope has already been and off-Broadway hit in New York. W. S. Merwin's translations of Lesage and Marivaux have been successfully broadcast by the B.B.C. Robert Lowell and James Schevill were commissioned by Eric Bentley to translate Phaedra and The Cid respectively. This is the fourth and last volume of a set: Volume I is devoted to Italian, Volume II to German, and Volume III to Spanish drama. A complete table of contents will be found inside the book." --

Book excerpt: "The classical view, said Gilbert Murray, is "the view of a man whose training and tastes lead him to regard literature as one, and the great Greek and Roman writers as central forces in it." Now, though justice may have been done to Greek and Roman drama itself, many of us have only the haziest notion how the tradition continued. In performance it is possible that there was an unbroken tradition from ancient days to the commedia dell'arte in the sixteenth century. The commedia in turn laid the basis for modern comedy. Yet the dramas enacted by the Italian comedians remain unknown because they survived only in unreadable scenarios. For the present volume Leon Katz has made a conjectural reconstruction of the complete dialogue of one such scenario. While the players maintained the classical tradition before a popular audience, the writers revived Roman comedy for a courtly audience. Machiavelli's Mandrake is the crowning achievement of the revival. There was no Chinese wall between the popular and courtly traditions. Such a writer as Beolco belongs to both, and later the mingling of elements will be a matter of controversy. The greatest of the feuds was between Goldoni and Gozzi in the eighteenth century. The paradox is that, in retrospect, Gozzi, who championed the commedia, seems the more "literary" and "academic," while Goldoni, the supposed reformer, if not abolisher, of the commedia, can plausibly be presented by modern scholars as its restorer... The question: What is Theatre? arises at this point, and the best purpose this collection can serve is to make the reader ask such elemental questions. As in the engravings of Callot, we find in these texts the essence of dramatic art." --

Though Ellington wrote many theatrical pieces, he was never able to achieve success as a composer for the stage, and today his stage shows receive little attention from music historians. Nevertheless, these works occupied a significant place in Ellington's creative imagination, and many of the ideas he employed in their composition found their way into his other work. Here is the first book to acknowledge Duke Ellington's contribution to the stage. It offers a survey of every theater piece Ellington is known to have worked on during his lifetime, beginning with the 1925 revue The Chocolate Kiddies and ending with the unfinished "street opera" Queenie Pie. This large body of work includes full-length musicals, African American revues, ballets, and incidental music. The plot of each work is described and the score analyzed according to its dramatic function in the piece. Musical phrases are reproduced in the text, and associations with other well-known Ellington compositions are noted.
