They are the constant reminder of the bigger, brighter and better ways of doing things, a higher type of country life, the application of scientific principles in agriculture; a more intimate realization of the rela tion of the individual to the community and of the community to the State and Nation. A good road is a good business investment, an edu cator, a moral force, a civilizer and an index to a high type of citizenship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bristol: A Historical and Topographical Account of the City IT is the object of the series of which this book forms one to link incident and place as closely as possible one with the other to describe the buildings and other objects in the city dealt with, not so much in their topographical order, as in connection with those chapters of the city's history, political, ecclesi astical, or civic, which they illustrate; with those periods during which they had their origin. That this has not been attempted, at least in a compact form, is the justification for yet another book about Bristol. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bristol In the series to which this little book belongs, Bristol represents the class of ancient English trading-towns; and accordingly, while, as far as space would permit, an attempt has been made to give some notice of all matters that have had a marked effect on the history of the town and city, that best illustrate the life of its inhabitants at different periods, and above all that connect it with the general affairs of the kingdom, special stress has been laid on the story of its trade and industry. In order to do this it has been needful to treat some points of interest more slightly than they may seem to deserve. Yet it is hoped that the reader will, on the whole, gain a correct idea of the character of the city's history, and of the place that it has filled in the life of the nation. As the plan of this series does not admit of references except where absolutely necessary, it is perhaps well to say here that no pains have been spared in the matter of consulting original authorities. In 1300 Edward I. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Colston's Days: A Story of Old Bristol All that is known with any certainty of the man, of whom Bristol is justly proud, is to be found in Mr. Thomas Garrard's life, ably edited by Mr. Tovey. I have to acknowledge my obligations to that work, and also to the three beautiful volumes entitled Bristol Past and Present, which ought to be in the library of every one who wishes to realise the history of this ancient city. I fimust also express my thanks to Miss Emily Holt for her valuable information as to the costumes of the period - a subject which, with its Christian names, she has studied so carefully, that she is an undoubted and reliable authority upon it, and many other like ques tions of interest, connected with the past of her country. In 1275 Edward I. caused the Jews of Gloucester to go to Bristol to dwell and abide there thereafter. In 1282 Aaron of Ireland, Jew, came to the shop of Robert of Arras, goldsmith, and offered him a plate of silver for sale before the eyes of many Xians who were present in the same place; in whose presence the said Robert received the sd plate from the said Jew, and when he had weighed it, charged the said Jew, that the said plate was fused from coin-chippings, and when the sd Jew heard this, he snatched the said plate from the hands of the said Robert, and ran off with it to the bridge over the water which is called Avon, and threw the said plate into the water, being followed by many Christians, who saw what he did; and by reason of the concourse and the general clamour the case came to the Constable's notice, and for that cause he arrested the Jew and detained him in prison, ... Ultimately he made fine with our Lord the King for release of suit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from City and Country of Bristol Corporation Public Libraries: Catalogue of the Central Lending Library Attention is drawn also to a large collection of articles, reviews, etc., which have been brought together under special subjects and bound in volumes. The contents of these volumes have not been set out in this catalogue, but a fully type-written index may be consulted in the Library. It should not be omitted to mention that this very useful and valuable method of bringing such printed matter together originated with the late Ci-ty Librarian (mr. John Taylor), a work which his successor has been glad to continue, so far as his time permitted, at all the City Libraries. As books become worn out in service they will be replaced as far as possible by fresh copies. When such works are out of print or undesirable they will be withdrawn from circulation, andthe old number in catalogue and indicator will be used again for new books. Additions of new books will be made to the Library from time to time, as far as the limited fund at the disposal of the Libraries Committee will permit. Some of the books catalogued have been duplicated for reading or reference in the Reading Room, but any book other than Fiction or juvenile works will be issued to a student or reader desiring the same, providing it is not in circulation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brief Sketch of the Life and Character of the Late Joseph Eaton, Esq.: Of the City of Bristol The parents of the late Mr. Eaton were highly-esteemed members of the society of Friends, to which division of the church-militant their son continued firmly attached to the close of his consistent and useful career. His parents were george and ann eaton. The former was a wholesale ironmonger, in Bristol; and joseph, the subject of this memoir, was born in the same city, in the year 1792: and being brought up to the same line of business, in due time succeeded his father therein, in conjunction with his brother george. This business the brothers finally relinquished in the month of December, 1835. Mr. Eaton received the rudiments of his useful and practical education at Burford, in Oxfordshire; an academy conducted by a member of the society, but whose treat ment of his pupil was, we learn, exceedingly severe. He was afterwards instructed in schools at Compton and at Bath; and in that at Burford was school fellow with george thomas, Esq., of Bristol, at present Chairmanof the Bristol Charity Trustees; with this gentleman Mr. Eaton was also, during many years, associated in various benevolent undertakings.
