In 1282 Aaron of Ireland, Jew, came to the shop of Robert of Arras, goldsmith, and offered him a plate of silver for sale before the eyes of many Xians who were present in the same place; in whose presence the said Robert received the sd plate from the said Jew, and when he had weighed it, charged the said Jew, that the said plate was fused from coin-chippings, and when the sd Jew heard this, he snatched the said plate from the hands of the said Robert, and ran off with it to the bridge over the water which is called Avon, and threw the said plate into the water, being followed by many Christians, who saw what he did; and by reason of the concourse and the general clamour the case came to the Constable's notice, and for that cause he arrested the Jew and detained him in prison, ... The contents of these volumes have not been set out in this catalogue, but a fully type-written index may be consulted in the Library. It should not be omitted to mention that this very useful and valuable method of bringing such printed matter together originated with the late Ci-ty Librarian (mr. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brief Sketch of the Life and Character of the Late Joseph Eaton, Esq.: Of the City of Bristol The parents of the late Mr. Eaton were highly-esteemed members of the society of Friends, to which division of the church-militant their son continued firmly attached to the close of his consistent and useful career. His parents were george and ann eaton. The former was a wholesale ironmonger, in Bristol; and joseph, the subject of this memoir, was born in the same city, in the year 1792: and being brought up to the same line of business, in due time succeeded his father therein, in conjunction with his brother george. This business the brothers finally relinquished in the month of December, 1835. Mr. Eaton received the rudiments of his useful and practical education at Burford, in Oxfordshire; an academy conducted by a member of the society, but whose treat ment of his pupil was, we learn, exceedingly severe. He was afterwards instructed in schools at Compton and at Bath; and in that at Burford was school fellow with george thomas, Esq., of Bristol, at present Chairmanof the Bristol Charity Trustees; with this gentleman Mr. Eaton was also, during many years, associated in various benevolent undertakings.
