Book Synopsis Plays by Samuel Foote and Arthur Murphy by : George Taylor
Download or read book Plays by Samuel Foote and Arthur Murphy written by George Taylor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-03-29 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For this volume George Taylor has edited five plays by two largely forgotten eighteenth-century playwrights, Samuel Foote and Arthur Murphy. The plays are The Minor and The Nabob by Foote and The Citizen, Three Weeks after Marriage and Know Your Own Mind by Murphy. All, apart from the last, are two- or three-act farces, the main popular fare of the eighteenth-century theatre. They are still eminently playable today, each exploring a different aspect of London society. Both playwrights have an acute ear for amusing and socially revealing dialogue, with a deft sense of situation comedy. Foote was an important theatre manager who established the success of the Haymarket Theatre by his particular brand of satire and mimicry. Had Murphy been more assiduous in his theatrical career and maintained good relations with David Garrick, his reputation as a dramatist might now have ranked him alongside Goldsmith and Sheridan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This index provides valuable information on the vast majority of reviews of poetry, fiction, and drama during the first 25 years of modern, formalized book reviewing in England. Forster introduces readers to the wealth of material in the two major review journals (Monthly Review and Critical Review), the two major magazines (Gentleman’s and London), and 11 other periodicals. She includes in her 3,023 entries information on format, price, and bookseller’s name taken from the books themselves. In her Introduction, Forster surveys some material concerning the reviewers’ public attitude to their self-appointed task to provide a background against which the reviewers’ literary judgments can be examined.

Download or read book The Correspondence of James Boswell and Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo written by James Boswell and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, tenth in the Research Correspondence Series of the Yale Editions of the Private Papers of James Boswell, documents the long friendship between Boswell and Sir William Forbes This volume, tenth in the Research Correspondence Series of the Yale Editions of the Private Papers of James Boswell, collects the letters exchanged between lawyer, diarist, and biographer James Boswell and Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo, eminent Scottish banker, civic improver, philanthropist, literary and cultural patron, and lay leader of Edinburgh's "English Episcopal" community. Forbes served as Boswell's most valued Scottish advisor, to whom he would often turn for personal, financial, moral, and religious guidance, and whom he would name executor of his estate and co-guardian of his children. The volume includes a total of 111 comprehensively annotated letters, few of which have appeared previously in print, between Forbes and Boswell and other correspondents. It illuminates in particular the period in which Boswell moved from Edinburgh to London and wrote his major books, The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson and The Life of Samuel Johnson.
