Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Plain Man Nothing is so hard to write as a book on a practical subject especially on so wide a subject as I have chosen. The reasons for my choice are stated in the first lecture. For publication I have two reasons. The first is given by the conditions of the lectureship, the second is that I have only tried to do what every member of the church ought to try to do. In this handbook first published in 1890, Charles Octavius Boothe simply and beautifully lays out the basics of theology for common people. "Before the charge 'know thyself,'" Boothe wrote, "ought to come the far greater charge, 'know thy God.'" He brought the heights of academic theology down to everyday language, and he helps us do the same today. Plain Theology for Plain People shows that evangelicalism needs the wisdom and experience of African American Christians. Walter R. Strickland II reintroduces this forgotten masterpiece for today. Lexham Classics are beautifully typeset new editions of classic works. Each book has been carefully transcribed from the original texts, ensuring an accurate representation of the writing as the author intended it to be read.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building a Working Church This book is written for all Builders of the Church, whether they be ministers or laymen, whether they build on her material or her spiritual side. Perfect or imperfect, the Church is the visible body of Christ, and therefore is deserving of the highest consideration. The author is convinced that strength and numbers can be added to the Church much more rapidly than they have been in the past, and that it is the supreme duty of Christians now living to make these additions. There is not a theory in the book. Experience has been gathered from country and city missions, from churches in villages, towns and cities. Only plans that have proved their value over and over again are included. The author feels safe in guaranteeing results when the work suggested is enthusiastically done. A church has done only half her work when she has maintained herself. As a man keeps himself in health that he may do his life work, so a church should maintain herself that she may do the work committed to her by her Lord. Beginning at Jerusalem the whole world must be evangelized. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church School and the Sunday School Normal Guide Plain men, indeed, were the fishermen of Galilee who first taught the Gospel, but they were not uneducated men. They may not have been familiar with the subtle ties of Greek philosophy, nor were they ranked as schol ars in the then approved Jewish schools. But they Were men of native strength, taught in the Hebrew Scriptures. They enjoyed intimate fellowship with the wisest of teachers for three years. They were earnest men and then, there came upon them a supernatural baptism. This gave them power over the dogmatists of Judea, the false philosophers of Greece, and the masses of the people, both Jews and Greeks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plain Sermons, Vol. 7 Such is the comfortable promise which the Church draws forth out of her divine stores, the Oracles of god, to support and cheer us now on the first Sunday of the new year. In early youth, men are not so greatly tempted to fear or to be disheartened; but, unless they learn where to find true and substantial comfort, and unless they can look to something whereon their hopes may rest securely, each new year is sure to bring them discouragement and fear. Young people, at first, expect to find this world full of enjoy ment; and whilst their hearts are yet comparatively pure, their hopes strong, and their minds vigorous, they too often persuade themselves there is no danger that they shall ever be led into any gross or grievous sin. But as years go on, we are all forced to learn, that this world is full of trouble and perplexity, rather than of ease and enjoy ment; that we must expect each year to bring its share of sorrow and disappointment, yes, and of temptation also and what is far worse, we find that these temptations prove to be greater than we are able to withstand. Moving beyond traditional exegetical and theological scholarship done on Romans 5, Barth offers an entirely new interpretation of the conception of humanity presented in Paul's view of the Christ-Adam relationship. A valid contribution to the interpretation of Romans 5, 'Christ and Adam' is also an example of Barth's exegetical method and provides insight into his broader theological project.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1879 edition. Excerpt: ...if Christ has given his Church the power of self-government, what the Church does in the exercise of that power, if consistent with his revealed will, has as much his sanction as it well could have under any theory of Church government. If Paul says the civil powers are ordained of God, so that they who resist, resist the ordinance of God, although God has not revealed even a general system of civil polity, we see not why the same is not much more true with respect to the Church. That this is the true doctrine on this subject is evident, in the first place, from the absence of any express command binding the Church in all ages to conform her mode of government in every respect to the example of the apostolic churches. If Christ and his apostles had intended to make such conformity a matter of perpetual obligation, it is fair to presume they would have said so. As they have nowhere given or intimated such a command, no man has now the right to bind the conscience of God's people in this matter. Again, that the apostles never meant to make their example in all points of this kind, a perpetual law for the Church, is plain from the fact that they did not themselves pursue, in all particulars, the same plan in all places. There are some general principles to which they seem to have adhered, but it is far from being certain, or even probable, that all the apostolic churches were organized exactly after the same model. This indeed was hardly possible in that day of inspiration and miraculous gifts, which the Spirit distributed to every man, according to his own will; so that some were apostles, some prophets, some teachers; after that miracles, then gifts of healing, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. According to another enumeration, ..

The reader will receive lifelong benefit and be enriched by these practical and understandable studies. It shows throughout a deep awareness and appreciation of the grand themes of the gospel, as found from the opening book of the Bible through Revelation.
