Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Society The church was not sent to be an institu tional dominion, but a sacrificial and redemp tive life in the world. Yet the church is not engaged in sacrifice and redemption, so much as in artificial organization; not engaged in discerning and teaching right from wrong, so much as in definition of doctrines. The anal ogy between Protestant Christendom in rela tion to its mission of social redemption, and the relation of the Jewish church to the first appearance of the Son of God, is true. I am haunted continually with the vision of the liv ing Jesus weeping over our majestic temples of worship, our halls of theology, our conven tions of religion, as though he were again in the sacred sorrow of that weeping over Jerusa lem, his heart again broken because' only the remnant may receive the mission which the institution rejects.but, whatever be the form in which they are destined to be shaped, the work which the Christian societies, as socie ties, have to do, in the days that are to come, is not inferior to any work which has lain before them at any epoch of their history. For the air is charged with thunder, and the times that are coming may be times of storm. There are phe nomena beneath the surface of society of which it would be hardly possible to overrate the significance. There is a widen ing separation of class from class: there is a growing social strain: there is a disturbance of the political equilibrium there is the rise of an educated proletariat. To the problems which these phenomena suggest Christianity has the key. Its unaccomplished mission is to reconstruct society on the basis of brotherhood. To you and me and men like ourselves is committed, in these anxious days, that which is at once an awful responsibility and a splendid destiny - to transform this modern world into a Christian society, to change the socialism which is based on the assumption of clashing interests into the socialism which is based on the sense of spiritual union, and to gather together the scattered forces of a divided Christendom into a confederation in which organization will be of less account than fellowship with one Spirit and faith in one Lord - into a communion wide as human life and deep as human need - into a Church which shall outshine even the golden glory of its dawn by the splendor of its eternal noon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature and Purpose of a Christian Society Probably most prefaces are postscripts, and I may say at once that this one is no exception. Some who have seen this lecture in proof have suggested the question, Why should a Lecture given to the Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends lean in this direction? It is all an appeal to the practice of the historic Church, writes one such reader, whereas the Quaker differentia is, for the most part, an appeal against the historic Church, 'the apostasy, ' in fact, to quote George Fox. I pass by the second clause here, and I admit the first, with a qualification; I appeal to the experience of the historic Church, and, if future readers of this lecture wish to know why, I will tell them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and Society It must be confessed that the policy is not without danger of abuse, but what ideal is there which may not be misrepresented by exaggeration and intemperance? Yet with government so sadly in need of the assistance that the Church might render, her refusal to recognize any rela tion to it seems to alienate her from the people Whose rational aspirations she should heartily share. The peculiar policy of the Men and Religion Movement, and one which differentiates it from the customary revival, is that it aims to leave behind it a Christianity organized. For social as well as personal religion. It presents a definite program for all who believe that making a com munity healthier, purer, more intelligent and law abiding is Christian service. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Views of Christianity, Society, and the Church Religion is natural to man and he ceases to be man the moment he ceases to be religious. This position is sustained by what we are con scious of in ourselves and by the universal history of mankind. Man has a capacity for religion, faculties which are useless without it, and wants which God alone can satisfy. Accordingly wherever he is, in whatever age or country, he has - with a few individual exceptions easily accounted for some sort of religious notions and some form of religious worship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Commonwealth In the manifold phases of society, whether in its rudest stages and in its progress, or as it may now be seen in different parts of the world, there may be recognised, among minor variations and resemblances, five distinctive features - the Hunting State, the Pastoral, Agricultural, Commercial, and Manufacturing. When it was perceived that nations the most advanced in civilisation were not the most moral; that their vices, if less gross, were more numerous; that they had corrupted or exterminated the Aborigines of newly-discovered countries - it is not surprising that some error should have been suspected to exist in the very foundations of society, nor is it unworthy of remark, that those authors who, from time to time, have speculated upon better systems of polity, were the most distinguished in the age in which they lived, for transcendent talent and profound wisdom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on the Christian Life The publisher of this volume has been anxiously desirous to promote, by such means as his position might place in his power, the habit of reading for direct religious edification. He has believed that, both in the private chamber and in the family circle, especially when any are deprived, wholly or partially, of the privileges of the sanctuary, no other books will quite supply the place of printed sermons; and he has regretted that, in our country, so few volumes of this class are offered to the public. In the hope that the taste of thoughtful persons may not be yet at settled variance with what was formerly esteemed so favourable to the growth of individual and domestic piety, he determined to enter on the publication of several volumes from living preachers of the Church, if their consent could be obtained, and if the first results of the enterprise should not be mere discouragements. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Towards a Christian Sociology IF the position be granted that is assumed by nearly all reformers, that the salvation of society involves among other things its reorganisation on some corporate or co-operative basis, there are two ways in which the problem of reconstruction may be approached. The first of these is the Christian one which, taking its stand on the permanent needs of human nature, assumes the existence of a type of society which may be designated as the normal, because it most perfectly satisfies human needs, and therefore directs its policy towards the recovery and strengthening of everything in life and society that is to be regarded as normal. The other, which is the Socialist one, is altogether destitute of any conception of normality, since, apart from the elementary needs of food, Clothing, and shelter, it treats other human needs as non-essentials, subject to Change and flux. It takes its stand on the supposed truth of a theory of social evolution according to which all social phenomena are to be regarded as relative, and human. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Experience of Saint Paul My experiment, however imperfect its success, certainly produced in me a growing sense of the greatness of Paul and the reality of his inspiration. His powerful intellect is not so remarkable for its constructive force as for its marvellous good sense and practical efficiency. He has an intense feeling, both above and on the threshold of consciousness, for what is necessary for the future of the Christian society. His whole soul is filled and possessed by a profound sense that he is but the agent and interpreter of a power within and above him. This power works primarily in his own person, and in all those who receive inspiration from him, in a love of love, of sweetness, gentleness, and righteousness, a love which makes rules unnecessary, and aspiration to a higher life the very breath of the spirit. But from time to time in the letters there come human touches, touches pathetically human, which remove the writer by a whole abyss from the preacher who stands above his audience, or the prophet who has no feeling for anything except his message. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church in the City If by its profound philosophy that monument of genius, piety, and erudition, "The City of God," was "the death warrant of ancient society," it was also, despite its mystic extravagances, the charter and vindication of the social purposes and program of Christianity. Nevertheless, the world yet awaits the fulfillment of the divine ideal in the production, through the agency of the people of God, of a society adapted to all the needs of man, a society that both permits and assists his complete development in the parts and qualities of his being. Is this achievement possible of realization? Not if Rousseau was correct. "We are told," he says in treating the subject of civic religion, "that a nation of Christians would form the most perfect society conceivable. In this supposition I see only one great difficulty - that a society of true Christians would be no longer a society of men." Pessimism establishes its logic by definitions. Schopenhauer, for example, "asserts that speculation is for action, wisdom for life, and then sophistically argues that we should not expect a metaphysician to be a saint." Christianity cannot organize society if it is itself inhuman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Profession of the Society of Friends: Commended to Its Members The following pages were written chief y with a view to my fellow-members of the religious Society of Friends, and especially to the younger part of them. Perhaps however their contents will not be without interest to some others, who, from whatever. Cause, may have more or less directed their attention to us. It is abundantly evident that the real character of those principles and views by which our society is chiefly distin guished, is very imperfectly apprehend ed, even by many of our own members; and this is necessarily the case, in a much greater degree, with others, whose opportunities of obtaining correct in formation are generally far less favour able. I am well aware that ample means already exist for such as are willing to take the pains to inform themselves on the subject. It has however appeared to me that there are at the present time circumstances which justify such an at tempt as that which I have here ven tured to make. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Civilization: An Address Delivered Before the Athenian Society And this is as true of politics, morals and religion as of practical art. Even in religion I believe there must be constant change, and may be constant progress. Some will think such a view most heretical; but let me ask you, if from the third century after Christ corruptions did not creep into the church? And whether, from the time of Luther, and even earlier, those corruptions have not been, one by one, laid aside? Have not men, during the last three hun dred years, learned to understand the Bible better and better, and to comprehend more and more the spirit of Jesus? If there has been progress thus far, will Christian humility lead us to think that it st0ps with us? That after all the struggles of the mightiest minds and noblest hearts, the advance is accomplished, and that we Wholly comprehend what our fathers understood but in part? And if there has not been progress, as there surely has been change, there must have been regress: and then, of course, if we have fallen behind our fathers, we must go forward to regain their position. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.
