Book Synopsis A New Christian Identity by : Amy B. Voorhees
Download or read book A New Christian Identity written by Amy B. Voorhees and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-02-10 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of Christian Science and the culture in which it arose, Amy B. Voorhees emphasizes Mary Baker Eddy's foundational religious text, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Assessing the experiences of everyday adherents after Science and Health's appearance in 1875, Voorhees shows how Christian Science developed a dialogue with both mainstream and alternative Christian theologies. Viewing God's benevolent allness as able to heal human afflictions through prayer, Christian Science emerged as an anti-mesmeric, restorationist form of Christianity that interpreted the Bible and approached emerging modern medicine on its own terms. Voorhees traces a surprising story of religious origins, cultural conversations, and controversies. She contextualizes Christian Science within a wide swath of cultural and religious movements, showing how Eddy and her followers interacted regularly with Baptists, Methodists, Congregationalists, Catholics, Jews, New Thought adherents, agnostics, and Theosophists. Influences flowed in both directions, but Voorhees argues that Christian Science was distinct not only organizationally, as scholars have long viewed it, but also theologically, a singular expression of Christianity engaging modernity with an innovative, healing rationale.

Book excerpt: In this book, my [Twain's] purpose has been to present a character portrait of Mrs. Eddy [founder of Christian Science Society], drawn from her own acts and words solely, not from hearsay and rumor; and to explain the nature an scope of her Monarchy, as revealed in the laws by which she governs it, and which she wrote herself. The controversial text was originally rejected by Twain's publisher.
Download or read book The God Beat written by Costica Bradatan and published by Broadleaf Books . This book was released on 2021-07-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the horrific 9/11 terrorist attacks we, as an increasingly secular nation, were reminded that religion is, for good and bad, still significant in the modern world. Alongside this new awareness, religion reporters adopted the tools of so-called New Journalists, reporters of the 1960s and '70s like Truman Capote and Joan Didion who inserted themselves into the stories they covered while borrowing the narrative tool kit of fiction to avail themselves of a deeper truth. At the turn of the millennium, this personal, subjective, voice-driven New Religion Journalism was employed by young writers, willing to scrutinize questions of faith and doubt while taking God-talk seriously. Articles emerged from such journalists as Kelly Baker, Ann Neumann, Patrick Blanchfield, Jeff Kripal, and Meghan O'Gieblyn, characterized by their brash, innovative, daring, and stylistically sophisticated writing and an unprecedented willingness to detail their own interaction with faith (or their lack thereof). The God Beat brings together some of the finest and most representative samples of this emerging genre. By curating and presenting them as part of a meaningful trend, this compellingly edited collection helps us understand how we talk about God in public spaces--and why it matters--in a whole new way.

Book excerpt: The rich variety of subjects treated by the Bible continues to be a source of amazement and of satisfaction to each generation as it is introduced to the Scriptures. Clergymen, Sunday school instructors, students, librarians, speakers and writers, and informed laymen -- all will find this book a marvel of convenience and clarity, and all will find that it can save hours of time that might otherwise be spent in research.
