This book was released on 2013 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the most mature and comprehensive statement of Mary Astell's religious and philosophical views. It also represents the culmination of Astell's feminist project to teach her fellow women how to lead useful lives of virtue and wisdom. The main purpose of this work is to instruct women about the ultimate nature of reality, the true source of happiness, their duties and obligations to God, and about "how best to live" and how to treat other people. This volume offers the first complete modern version of the 1717 second edition. It provides a fully modernized text, a scholarly introduction, biographical and bibliographical information, general historical-intellectual background, and definitions of obscure and archaic terms.
Download or read book Mary Astell written by William Kolbrener and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Astell: Reason, Gender, Faith includes essays from diverse disciplinary perspectives to consider the full range of Astell's political, theological, philosophical, and poetic writings. The volume does not eschew the more traditional scholarly interest in Astell's concerns about gender; rather, it reveals how Astell's works require attention not only for their role in the development of early modern feminism, but also for their interventions on subjects ranging from political authority to educational theory, from individual agency to divine service, and from Cartesian ethics to Lockean epistemology. Given the vast breadth of her writings, her active role within early modern political and theological debates, and the sophisticated complexity of her prose, Astell has few parallels among her contemporaries. Mary Astell: Reason, Gender, Faith bestows upon Astell the attention which she deserves not merely as a proto-feminist, but as a major figure of the early modern period.
Book Synopsis The Works of William Congreve by : Donald McKenzie
Download or read book The Works of William Congreve written by Donald McKenzie and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-04-07 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late D. F. McKenzie worked on this comprehensive edition of the works of the playwright, poet, librettist, and novelist William Congreve for more than twenty years, until his sudden death in 1999. This was a task he had taken over from Herbert Davis, to whom this edition is dedicated. During that time McKenzie uncovered new verse and letters, collated Congreve's texts, recorded their complicated textual history, constructed appendices that shed light on the dramatic context in which Congreve worked, and examined how his contemporaries received Congreve's work. More importantly, McKenzie has convincingly re-evaluated Congreve's works and life to transform our image of the man and his reputation. McKenzie here follows the editorial practice suggested in two early editions of the Works published by Congreve's friend, the bookseller Jacob Tonson, in 1710 and 1719. These three volumes follow a plan similar to that in the Tonson edition, with The Old Batchelor, The Double-Dealer, and Love for Love collected in the first, a central volume with The Way of the World, and a final volume with Congreve's novel Incognita, some of his prose works, letters, and later verse. In each case, Congreve's work is left to speak for itself, unencumbered by intrusive notes, textual apparatus, or collations, which are gathered instead near the end of each volume. This edition will be an invaluable resource for scholars for many years to come. It is a monument to McKenzie's own scholarship as well as to the integrity of William Congreve.
Book Synopsis Mary Astell and John Norris by : Melvyn New
Download or read book Mary Astell and John Norris written by Melvyn New and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the progress made in recent years in recovering the writings of early modern women, one might expect that a complete set of the important works of Mary Astell (1666-1731) would have been reissued long before now. Instead, only portions of the thought of the 'First English Feminist' have reached a wide academic audience. This volume presents a critical and annotated edition of the correspondence between Astell and John Norris of Bemerton (1657-1711), Letters Concerning the Love of God, which was published in three separate editions during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (1695, 1705, 1730). This work had profound significance in eighteenth-century intellectual and religious circles, and represents a crucial step in the development of Norris and Astell's philosophical and theological opposition to that most prominent of Enlightenment figures, John Locke. Letters Concerning the Love of God includes, as contextual material, Norris's Cursory Reflections upon a Book Call'd, An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1690), the first published philosophical response to (as Bishop Stillingfleet would later put it) Locke's 'new way of ideas,' and Astell's biting and comprehensive attack on Locke in the 'Appendix' to the second edition of The Christian Religion, As Professed by a Daughter of the Church of England (1717). These texts serve to place both Letters and its authors in the contentious philosophical-theological climate to which they belonged, one wherein, most significantly, Locke's present-day preeminence had yet to be realized. The editors' extensive introduction and annotations to this volume not only provide background on the historical and biographical elements, but also elucidate philosophical and theological concepts that are perhaps unfamiliar to modern readers.
Book Synopsis Reason and Religion in Clarissa by : E. Derek Taylor
Download or read book Reason and Religion in Clarissa written by E. Derek Taylor and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2009 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Departing from traditional Lockean readings of Clarissa, E. Derek Taylor offers a new interpretation informed by the writings of Locke's first critic, John Norris. Alluded to throughout Richardson's novel, Norris's philosophical and religious ideas provide the rhetorical grounding for Clarissa, while the arguments on behalf of women by early feminists like Mary Astell (an intellectual ally of Norris) supply the combination of progressive feminism and conservative theology that animate the text.
