Book excerpt: A Struggle has began, which promises to be one of the fiercest that this century has seen, between the bigots and persecutors on the one hand and the supporters of free speech on the other. It appears, then, worthwhile to look closely into this Christian creed, which claims the right to imprison and torture men of pure life for non-belief in its tenets. Christianity threatens us with persecution here and damnation hereafter if we do not believe its doctrines. "He that believeth not shall be damned," says Jesus. "He that believeth not shall be imprisoned and pick oakum," says Mr. Justice North. The threat of damnation would trouble us little if it stood alone-we could put off consideration of that until we arrived in the other world; but the threat of imprisonment here is unpleasant. If we are to burn for ever hereafter, the Christians might really allow us to enjoy ourselves here; is their malice (like their hell) such a bottomless pit that an eternity of torture is not enough to fill it up?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Printed by Edmund Calamy, and with a hearty recommendation from Simeon Ashe, this powerful work by John Brinsley explains 2 Timothy 3:2, “For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers...” He explains that in his day (and now in ours) there were those who "sigh and cry" for many abominable blasphemies which are expressed and belched out into the face of God's Divine Majesty. His purpose is to demonstrate and create a Scriptural antidote to the many "contagions" that roam the corridors of the church, and blaspheme Jesus Christ and his people. In this masterful treatise he covers the biblical definitions of blasphemy, how God is personally blasphemed, what are heretics and false professors, gives a number of applications to the text, and demonstrates how Christians may avoid blaspheming God. You may think, "I don't do that so I don't need this work," but that would be presumptuous. Every Christian, every day, is faced with various instances of bringing reproach to Christ and his word. This work is an antidote to those temptations. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul s ways of speaking about God, Jesus, and the Spirit are intricately intertwined: talking about any one of the three, for Paul, implies reference to all of them together. However, much current Pauline scholarship discusses Paul s God-, Christ-, and Spirit-language without reference to trinitarian theology. In contrast to that trend, Wesley Hill argues in this book that later, post-Pauline trinitarian theologies represent a better approach, opening a fresh angle on Paul s earlier talk about God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Spirit. Hill looks critically at certain well-known discussions in the field of New Testament studies -- those by N. T. Wright, Richard Bauckham, Larry Hurtado, and others -- in light of patristic and contemporary trinitarian theologies, resulting in an innovative approach to an old set of questions. Adeptly integrating biblical exegesis and historical-systematic theology, Hill s Paul and the Trinity shows how trinitarian theologies illumine interpretive difficulties in a way that more recent theological concepts have failed to do.
