Book excerpt: Excerpt from Opening a Chestnut Burr In fancy, I see them around the glowing hearth of quiet homes, such as I have tried to describe in the following pages, and hope that this new comer will be welcomed for the sake of those that preceded it. Possibly it may make friends of its own. From widely separated parts of the country, and from almost every class, I have received many and cordial assurances that my former books were not only sources of pleasure, but also of help and bene, fit, and I am deeply grateful for the privilege of unobtrusively entering so many households, and saying words on that subject which is inseparable from happiness in both worlds. I think the purpose of the book will become apparent to the reader. The incidents and charac ters are mainly imaginary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chestnut Burr, 1923, Vol. 10: The Book of the Year Working under the direction of the Dean of Women in Kent are the two house mothers of Moulton and Lowry Halls, the dietitian, and the resident nurse. Together these form the Dean's Council, which meets regularly to con sider all the matters concerning the women residing in the halls. As there are about twice as many women students at Kent State living off campus as on, the Dean's major problem is to get into close touch with the women who board or live at home in Kent, or at home. In nearby towns. To accomplish this purpose, an Off Campus Women's Club has been formed, which has already done much. In November, the Dean of Women gave a tea to all the landladies of Kent who have college women living with them, that they might become better acquainted and might better understand their mutual relationships and responsibilities. During the winter term, the Dean of Women visited the houses in Kent, and made a list of approved rooming places for college women students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Patriot, 1918 Many of our men sat smoking in meditative silence, thinking of the poor fellows lying out there in the field so white and still. They were no longer the enemy, simply the beings of God's creation. Those bodies once moved with the life and vitality He had given them. Mortal hands had destroyed the body, but the soul, impervious to human destruction, took its place in eternity. As they sat there with these thoughts in mind there crept into their consciousness this proposition, Man has destroyed that which God has made, and the deep silence with which it was accepted made one feel he was witnessing an atonement between man and the Almighty. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Every Root an Anchor, writer and arborist R. Bruce Allison celebrates Wisconsin's most significant, unusual, and historic trees. More than one hundred tales introduce us to trees across the state, some remarkable for their size or age, others for their intriguing histories. From magnificent elms to beloved pines to Frank Lloyd Wright's oaks, these trees are woven into our history, contributing to our sense of place. They are anchors for time-honored customs, manifestations of our ideals, and reminders of our lives' most significant events. For this updated edition, Allison revisits the trees' histories and tells us which of these unique landmarks are still standing. He sets forth an environmental message as well, reminding us to recognize our connectedness to trees and to manage our tree resources wisely. As early Wisconsin conservationist Increase Lapham said, "Tree histories increase our love of home and improve our hearts. They deserve to be told and remembered."

Book excerpt: When the Bergson family leave their home in Sweden to travel to the United States in search of a better life, they, like many immigrants, are awed by the beautiful harshness of their new life in Nebraska. When their father, John Bergson, grows sick and dies, he leaves the farm in the hands of his eldest daughter Alexandra Bergson. Resourceful and determined, Alexandra devotes her life to her family's farm, determined to prosper even as her neighbors are overwhelmed by the unremitting demands of pioneer life. But when she falls in love with her childhood friend, Carl Linstrum, Alexandra must choose between her duty to the land, and to her heart. A spirited celebration of the immigrants who have shaped the United States, O Pioneers! is a masterpiece by a Pulitzer Prize-winning author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most well-known and influential autobiographies ever written, The Education of Henry Adams is told in the third person, as if its author were watching his own life unwind. It begins with his early life in Quincy, the family seat outside of Boston, and soon moves on to primary school, Harvard College, and beyond. He learns about the unpredictability of politics from statesmen and diplomats, and the newest discoveries in technology, science, history, and art from some of the most important thinkers and creators of the day. In essentially every case, Adams claims, his education and upbringing let him down, leaving him in the dark. But as the historian David S. Brown puts it, this is a “charade”: The Education’s “greatest irony is its claim to telling the story of its author’s ignorance, confusion, and misdirection.” Instead, Adams uses its “vigorous prose and confident assertions” to attack “the West after 1400.” For instance, industrialization and technology make Adams wonder “whether the American people knew where they were driving.” And in one famous chapter, “The Dynamo and the Virgin,” he contrasts the rise of electricity and the power it brings with the strength and resilience of religious belief in the Middle Ages. The grandson and great-grandson of two presidents and the son of a politician and diplomat who served under Lincoln as minister to Great Britain, Adams was born into immense privilege, as he knew well: “Probably no child, born in the year, held better cards than he.” After growing up a Boston Brahmin, he worked as a journalist, historian, and professor, moving in early middle age to Washington. Although Adams distributed a privately printed edition of a hundred copies of The Education for friends and family in 1907, it wasn’t published more widely until 1918, the year he died. The book won the Pulitzer Prize for biography in 1919, and in 1999 a Modern Library panel placed it first on its list of the best nonfiction books published in the twentieth century. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
