Book excerpt: The highly acclaimed Russian classic of twentieth-century theatre about a wealthy family unable to let go of the past or face the future. At the turn of the century, Russia is undergoing massive changes. Feudalism has ended, the middle class is growing, and the aristocracy are uncertain of their future . . . The cherry orchard on the Ranevskaya grounds is known throughout the country for its beauty, but it now sits on the brink of ruin. The entire estate is headed for auction if the family cannot pay off their debts. The land’s fate lies in the hands of the family’s matriarch, Madame Ranevskaya, recently returned from five years in Paris where she wasted away much of her fortunes. Neither Ranevskaya nor anyone else in her household can fathom the gravity of the situation. But a merchant, the son of a former serf on the land, has an idea . . . Written in 1903, The Cherry Orchard premiered in Moscow in 1904. It was Chekhov’s last play before his death that same year. Since then, the work has been translated and adapted into numerous languages and performed around the world.

Book excerpt: 'Frayn's translation, which strikes me as splendidly lucid and alive . . . will be acted again and again' New Statesman In Chekhov's tragi-comedy - perhaps his most popular play - the Gayev family is torn by powerful forces deeply rooted in history and the society in which they live. Their estate is hopelessly in debt: urged to cut down their beautiful cherry orchard and sell the land for holiday cottages, they struggle to act decisively. Originally published to coincide with Peter Hall's National Theatre production in 1978, this edition features the revised translation staged by Sam Mendes at the Aldwych Theatre, London, in 1989, starring Judi Dench and Ronald Pickup. Book excerpt: Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet, in this unique adaptation of one of the great masterpieces of the theater, allows us to see Anton Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard" in totally new and surprising ways. As Mamet explains in his introduction, he views the play "as a series of scenes about sexuality and, particularly, frustrated sexuality" rather than about a dying Russia. The result, said 'The Sentinel,' "blows a gust of fresh air into the old play" while the Chicago Sun-Times called it "audacious [and] consistently arresting." "Mamet the adaptor has turned Chekhov's Cherry Orchard into a Mamet play. Mamet's ear is famously impeccable, the dialogue is always authentic and convincing . . . . This is a tribute to its strong point of view and clear point of departure. If nothing else, it will help to undermine our silly critical notions of 'definitive' Chekhov. Mamet has made me rethink the play." - Robert Brustein, 'The New Republic'

Book excerpt: Stephen Karam is known for his dedication to exploring the idiosyncrasies of human speech and behavior -- the subtleties, the depth, and the awkward minutia. With this new adaptation of Chekhov’s canonical masterpiece about a family on the brink of bankruptcy, Karam's fluid style finds a harmonious fit with the work of the master playwright.

Book excerpt: The Cherry Orchard is Russian playwright Anton Chekhov's last play. It premiered at the Moscow Art Theatre 17 January 1904 in a production directed by Constantin Stanislavski. Chekhov intended this play as a comedy and it does contain some elements of farce; however, Stanislavski insisted on directing the play as a tragedy. Since this initial production, directors have had to contend with the dual nature of this play. The play concerns an aristocratic Russian woman and her family as they return to the family's estate (which includes a large and well-known cherry orchard) just before it is auctioned to pay the mortgage. The story presents themes of cultural futility - both the futility of the aristocracy to maintain its status and the futility of the bourgeoisie to find meaning in its newfound materialism. In reflecting the socio-economic forces at work in Russia at the turn of the 20th century, including the rise of the middle class after the abolition of serfdom in the mid-19th century and the sinking of the aristocracy, the play reflects forces at work around the globe in that period.

Book excerpt: A Doll's House is a three-act play written by Henrik Ibsen in 1879. It is a groundbreaking play that explores the themes of marriage, gender roles, and identity in 19th century society. Ibsen's play was met with controversy and outrage due to its bold critique of the traditional roles of men and women in marriage. The play has since become a classic of modern drama and is widely studied and performed in educational institutions around the world. The play is set in Norway and follows the story of Nora Helmer, a seemingly happy and content housewife. However, as the play unfolds, we see that Nora is living a double life. She has secretly borrowed money to save her husband's life, and is now being blackmailed by the lender. The play depicts Nora's struggle to find her true identity and the consequences of living a life based on societal expectations rather than her own desires. One of the main themes explored in the play is the role of women in marriage. Nora is portrayed as a typical 19th century wife, who is expected to be obedient, nurturing, and submissive. However, as the play progresses, we see that Nora is not content with this role and longs for independence and self-discovery. Ibsen challenges the traditional gender roles and shows how society's expectations can suffocate and limit an individual's growth. Another important theme in the play is the concept of identity. Nora's character undergoes a transformation throughout the play as she begins to question her role as a wife and mother. She realizes that she has been living a life that is not truly her own, and she must break free from societal expectations to find her true self. This theme is also reflected in the character of Torvald, Nora's husband, who is more concerned with his social status and reputation than his wife's happiness. Ibsen also uses symbolism throughout the play to convey deeper meanings. The title "A Doll's House" itself is significant, as it represents the idea that women were seen as mere playthings or objects in a patriarchal society. The Christmas tree, a recurring symbol in the play, represents the facade of happy family life that Nora and Torvald try to maintain. However, as the tree begins to shed its decorations, it symbolizes the unraveling of Nora's perfect facade. At the time of its publication, A Doll's House was met with harsh criticism and was deemed scandalous due to its portrayal of a woman challenging societal norms. However, its impact on modern drama cannot be overstated. Ibsen's play paved the way for a new genre of realistic drama and influenced many other playwrights to explore similar themes. It continues to be studied and performed today, as it remains relevant in its critique of societal expectations and the struggle for individual identity.

Book excerpt: A room which is still called the nursery. One of the doors leads into ANYA'S room. It is close on sunrise. It is May. The cherry-trees are in flower but it is chilly in the garden. There is an early frost. The windows of the room are shut. DUNYASHA comes in with a candle, and LOPAKHIN with a book in his hand. LOPAKHIN. The train's arrived, thank God. What's the time? DUNYASHA. It will soon be two. [Blows out candle] It is light already. LOPAKHIN. How much was the train late? Two hours at least. [Yawns and stretches himself] I have made a rotten mess of it! I came here on purpose to meet them at the station, and then overslept myself . . . in my chair. It's a pity. I wish you'd wakened me. DUNYASHA. I thought you'd gone away. [Listening] I think I hear them coming.
