Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry of Synthetic Drugs This book contains more than a mere description of the chemical nature and mode of preparation of many synthetic drugs. For a scientific understanding of the subject, it is necessary to pay considerable attention to reactions taking place between the drug and the living organism whenever these can be traced, and to the rela tion between the chemical character of a substance and its pharmacological action, even though this relation is neither so complete nor so simple as might be desired, and is con fined to only a few of the numerous chemical compounds that are used as drugs. It has been thought desirable to mention briefly the therapeutic effect of most of the chief drugs, so that readers may gain some idea of their relative importance, but no attempt has been made to deal in any detail with pharma oology or therapeutics, subjects which lie quite outside the scope and aim of this book. It has been neither possible nor necessary to mention all the synthetic drugs which have been prepared in recent years, as many of them pos sess neither scientific nor therapeutic value. Besides the practical importance and inherent interest of the subject, it may also be of great value as a means of opening up new channels of research and of discovering new types of compounds. Just as the discovery of the coal-tar colours gave a great stimulus to the study of aromatic compounds, so the efforts to produce new drugs have led to a greatly increased knowledge of certain types of compounds, as for example those containing carbon united to arsenic and antimony. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of available synthetic methods can be overwhelming. In order to create novel motifs and templates which confer new and potentially valuable drug-like properties, it is important to know which synthetic methodologies will give the best results. Similarly, which methodologies are used to progress potential drug candidates from leads through the development process? What are the current industrial research problems and how can they be resolved in an industrial setting? This book highlights key methods that have real impact in drug discovery and facilitate delivery of drug molecules. Synthetic Methods in Drug Discovery Volume 1 focuses on the hugely important area of transition metal mediated methods used in industry. Current methods of importance such as the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, Buchwald-Hartwig couplings and CH activation are discussed. In addition, exciting emerging areas such as decarboxylative coupling, and the uses of iron and nickel in coupling reactions are also covered. This book provides both academic and industrial perspectives on some key reactions giving the reader an excellent overview of the techniques used in modern synthesis. Reaction types are conveniently framed in the context of their value to industry and the challenges and limitations of methodologies are discussed with relevant illustrative examples. Edited and authored by leading scientists from both academia and industry, this book will be a valuable reference for all chemists involved in drug discovery as well as postgraduate students in medicinal chemistry.

Book excerpt: Synthetic drugs, as opposed to natural drugs, are chemically produced in a laboratory. Their chemical structure can be either identical to or different from naturally occurring drugs, and their effects are designed to mimic or even enhance those of natural drugs. When produced clandestinely, they are not typically controlled pharmaceutical substances intended for legitimate medical use. Designer drugs are a form of synthetic drugs. They contain slightly modified molecular structures of illegal or controlled substances, and they are modified in order to circumvent existing drug laws. While the issue of synthetic drugs and their abuse is not new, the 112th Congress has demonstrated a renewed concern with the issues. This book provides an overview of current trends in select synthetic cannabinoids and stimulants, and reviews relevant legislation in the 112th Congress as well as issues for policy-makers.

Book excerpt: This data collection compiles over 150,000 synonyms and molecular structures of more than 16,000 synthetic drugs used for their identification, e.g. names adopted by certain institutions, common names, names adopted by manufacturers, experimental names, abbreviations, and the non-proprietary names proposed by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The indices makes drug search even easier and more efficient. The 8th edition has been enlarged by almost one third taking into account the rapidly increasing number of the newly developed drugs.
