Book excerpt: Among the most essential processes for sustaining the world's population is nitrogen fixation, the conversion of atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into ammonia (NH3), the major component of fertilizer. The industrial Haber-Bosch process for N2 fixation requires extreme temperatures and pressures, and consequentially consumes much of the world's energy. In contrast, bacteria containing the nitrogenase enzyme fix N2 under ambient conditions despite the robust N2 triple bond. A popular approach towards studying the complex mechanism of nitrogenase is to synthesize model complexes of its active site, the iron-molybdenum co-factor (FeMoco). Most model complexes to date are low-spin and thus poorly resemble FeMoco's high-spin environment. The first high-spin iron (I) terminal N2 adduct was recently synthesized by the Harman Lab using an adamantyl-substituted trispyrazolylborate (Tp) ligand. However, its electron-rich nature renders it incapable of forming N-H bonds. We propose the synthesis of a more electron-deficient, fluorinated Tp ligand, Tp(3,5-(CF3)2Ph, CF3 (hydrotris-3-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)Phenyl)-5-(trifluoromethyl)borate). When bound to iron, this should facilitate the reduction at less negative potentials and the functionalization of N2. Synthesis of (3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl) methyl ketone has been completed. Claisen condensation with trifluoroethylacetate, followed by condensation with hydrazine to form the pyrazole ring is underway. Combing the pyrazole with sodium borohydride will generate the Na Tp(3,5-(CF3)2Ph, CF3. Subsequent metalation with iron(II) chloride under an inert atmosphere should generate the corresponding iron compound. Compounds will be characterized by a variety of methods including 1H & 19F-NMR, EPR, IR, Raman, X-ray crystallography, and cyclic voltammetry.

Book excerpt: Our interest in fluorinated triazapentadienyl ligands is due to the relevant results observed over the past years in catalysis by fluorous biphase chemistry, the increased stability of metal adducts supported by fluorinated ligands, and the utility of monoanionic, nitrogen-based ligands such as ß-diketiminates (or 1,5-diazapentadienyls) and tris(pyrazolyl)borates in the synthesis and catalytic application of the corresponding metal complexes. Fluorinated 1,3,5-triazapentadienyls, a relatively new class of monoanionic, bidentate, nitrogen-based ligands in coordination chemistry, were successfully obtained starting with a modified method for the synthesis of fluorinated triazapentadienes. This modified method is cheaper than the classical method and provides a route to obtaining highly fluorinated triazapentadienes in good yields. Deprotonation of these triazapentadienes yielded the triazapentadienyl ligands. Fluorinated triazapentadienyl ligands were highly effective in the isolation and full characterization of a variety of copper(I), silver(I) and gold(I) adducts which show quite interesting bonding and structural features as well as some useful catalytic properties. Structural and spectroscopic data of triazapentadienyl-copper(I)-carbonyl and -ethylene complexes revealed that fluorinated triazapentadienyl ligands are weak ơ-donors. For example, in infrared spectroscopy the u(CO) signals of triazapentadienyl-copper(I)-carbonyl adducts are close to the corresponding signal of free CO, and appear at higher values than the copper(I)-ß-diketiminate analogs. This suggests that triazapentadienyl ligands generate a more acidic metal center with poor M - CO ıpiı-back-donation. Similarly, the 1H NMR signals of triazapentadienyl-copper(I)-ethylene compounds show upfield shifted values for the bonded ethylene moieties in comparison with a ß-diketiminate-copper(I) analog. Moreover, copper(I)-ethylene and -acetonitrile adducts supported by triazapentadienyl ligands effectively catalyzed carbene and nitrene transfer reactions to a variety of substrates in high efficiencies. X-ray diffraction analyses of triazapentadienyl-silver(I) complexes showed that in the solid state fluorinated triazapentadienyl ligands can bind to silver(I) in up to three different modes of coordination. For example, triazapentadienyl ligands can be K2-donors via terminal nitrogen atoms or K1-donors via either a central or one terminal nitrogen atom. In addition, the ligands can adopt U- or W-shaped backbones. 19F NMR spectroscopy data offer a way to assign the structural configuration of the metal-triazapentadienyl interaction and to predict the conformation of the fluorinated ligand backbone. Gold(I) adducts were isolated for the first time with ß-diketiminate ligands. These remarkably air and light stable compounds are dinuclear species and feature 12-membered metallacycles in the solid state. In addition, fluorinated triazapentadienyl-gold(I)-ethylene adducts were isolated as air and light stable monomers in the solid state. 1H and 13C NMR analyses show that there is a higher degree of ıpiı-back-donation in gold(I)-ethylene complexes in comparison with the copper(I)-ethylene analogs. Gold(I)-ethylene adducts supported by fluorinated triazapentadienyl ligands also mediate carbene transfer reactions from ethyl diazoacetate to saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons.

Each of these imaging modalities has its own advantages and disadvantages, and therefore, a multimodal approach combining two techniques is often adopted to generate complementary anatomical and functional information of the disease. The basis for designing imaging probes for a given application is dictated by the chosen imaging modality, which in turn is dependent upon the concentration and localization profile (vascular, extracellular matrix, cell membrane, intracellular, near or at the cell nucleus) of the target molecule. The development of high-affinity ligands and their conjugation to the targeting vector is also one of the key steps for pursuing efficient molecular imaging probes. Book excerpt: Metal fluoride complexes that are extremely sensitive to air and water have been characterized by liquid injection field desorption/ionization (LIFDI) mass spectrometry. Dilute solutions of fluoride complexes of nickel, rhodium, titanium, zirconium, hafnium and ruthenium in toluene and tetrahydrofuran were examined by LIFDI methods on a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. All the spectra of nickel, titanium zirconium and hafnium complexes exhibited the molecular ion as base peak. The ruthenium and rhodium complexes showed loss of HF from the molecular ion as base peaks but the molecular ions were easily detected. Two new nickel fluoride complexes are formed by C-F activation reactions with 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-dimethylaminopyridine and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-methoxypyridine yielding 3,5,6-trifluoro-4-dimethylaminopyridine nickel fluoride and 3,5,6-trifluoro-4-methoxypyridine nickel fluoride, respectively. The crystal structure of 3,5,6-trifluoro-4-dimethylaminopyridine nickel fluoride shows typical square planar coordination at nickel with an Ni-F distance of 1.8521(9) Å. pentamethylcyclopentadienyl metal difluoride (metal = Ti, Zr, Hf) complexes were synthesized from the reaction corresponding metal dichloride with NaF. N,N-dimethylethylene-1,2-diamine metal difluoride complexes (metal = Zn, Co, Ni) were synthesized from the reaction of metal difluoride with N,N-dimethylethylene-1,2-diamine. Ruthenium difluoride complexes were prepared from the reaction of ruthenium bis bifluoride complexes with TMAF. The compounds were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and LIFDI mass spectrometry. The nickel monofluoride complexes do not provide useful mass spectra by EI or ESI methods. Only the difluoride complexes of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, ruthenium, zinc, cobalt and nickel species showed evidence of the fluoride ligands in the ESI spectra. Collision induced dissociation (CID) was used to investigate the fragmentation pattern of the ions formed in the ESI mass spectrum. It was observed that the ligand attached to the metal has an effect on the fragmentation pattern of complex and the presence of phosphine strengthens the metal fluoride bond. A modified quadrupole mass spectrometer was used to carry out gas phase ion molecule (I-M) reaction of metal ions with liquid and gaseous neutral molecule. Transition metal fluoride complexes did not show evidence of I-M reactions while Re and Mn tricarbonyl complexes have shown 100% conversion to the product. The decay pathway of multiply charged anions (MCAs) of Ti and Zr was also investigated and it was found that these ions decay through ionic fragmentation rather than electron detachment. Hydrogen bonding of pentamethyl cyclopentadienyl difluoride complexes of Ti and Zr with indole and 1,1,1,3,3,3 hexafluoroisopropanol was studied using fluorine NMR spectroscopy. Change in entropy and change in enthalpy were calculated from the equilibrium constant values (K) using Van't Hoff's equation.

Book excerpt: Fluorinated organic compounds play important roles in our society, as these products range from life-saving pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals, to fluoropolymers with extremely high thermal and chemical stability. Although elemental fluorine (F2) is the most reactive element, some fluoro-organic compounds are chemically inert. As such, controlled reactivity of fluorine or highly-fluorinated organic fragments is a considerable, yet important challenge for synthetic chemists. Fluoro-organometallic chemistry has been studied for decades, as researchers attempt to maximize the potential of metal mediated/catalyzed processes for the synthesis of fluorinated organic molecules. Within this framework, metal fluorocarbene complexes are particularly interesting because of their highly tunable reactivity, and are proposed for use in important metathesis/polymerization reactions of perfluorinated alkenes. While considerable work is still needed to make these proposed reactions a reality, this thesis outlines contributions from our research group. We showed that cobalt fluorocarbene complexes CpCo(=CFRF)(PPh2Me) (RF = F, CF3) undergo [2+2] cycloaddition reactions with tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and phenylacetylene to form perfluorometallacyclobutane and partially fluorinated metallacyclobutene products, respectively. For both reactions, computational studies reveal a stepwise ring-closing mechanism, which proceeds through a singlet 1,4-diradical intermediate. Next, the formation of CpCo(=CF2)(L) complexes is achieved via the direct addition of difluorocarbene, generated in situ, to a cobalt(I) precursor. Subsequent addition of CF2 to cobalt fluorocarbene complexes results in [2+1] cycloaddition and formation of perfluorinated alkene complexes. The [2+1] addition is highly favored as the cobalt fluorocarbenes readily react with electrophilic CF2. A series of experiments provide evidence for the stepwise nature of fluoroalkene complex formation. From Co(I) fluorocarbene complexes, the focus shifts to preparing metal fluorocarbenes with electrophilic-type reactivity. The synthesis of bis(perfluoroalkyl) complexes serve as precursors for preparation of perfluoroalkyl cobalt(III) fluorocarbenes, which undergo migratory insertion reactions of the fluorocarbene into the perfluoroalkyl ligand. Using a similar synthetic approach, nickel(II) and palladium(II) difluorocarbene complexes are prepared from their corresponding trifluoromethyl precursors. The synthesis, characterization and reactivity of cobalt(III) fluoride complexes is also described, including the catalytic fluorination of acyl chlorides, demonstrating the first example of a cobalt(III) catalyzed fluorination reaction. The effects of the various ancillary ligands on these cobalt catalysts are investigated using high-throughput experimentation technology, and the scope of the reaction is expanded to include the synthesis of a variety of acyl fluoride compounds. Finally, the results and learnings from this work will be summarized and highlighted. The future directions and novel research which could result from the continuation of these projects is discussed, with an emphasis placed on the areas believed to have the highest potential impact.

Book excerpt: A self-consistent set of sigma constants was developed to obtain linear free energy relations with titanium tetrafluoride complexes of the aromatic amine oxides. Several series of the diadducts of titanium tetrafluoride were studied with high-resolution fluorine-19 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. These series consisted of fluorotitanate complexes of formula TiF4.2(donor) and TiF5.(donor)( - ), where donor represents an organic molecule (Lewis base) which coordinates through oxygen. The TiF4.2(donor) adducts included both TiF4.2D complexes in which the donors are identical, and TiF4.D, D' complexes, in which D and D' represent different Lewis bases. Cis-trans isomerism of the diadducts of TiF4 was also studied. Some complexes of TiF4 with substituted pyridines were also investigated. Fluorine-19 chemical shifts and spin-spin coupling constants were determined for most of the fluorotitanate complexes. The temperature dependence of the TiF4.2D spectra was also studied. The low infrared spectra of some SnF4.2D and TiF4.2D were also obtained. (Author).
