Download or read book Boron Separation Processes written by Nalan Kabay and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-01-19 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impending crisis posed by water stress and poor sanitation represents one of greatest human challenges for the 21st century, and membrane technology has emerged as a serious contender to confront the crisis. Yet, whilst there are countless texts on wastewater treatment and on membrane technologies, none address the boron problem and separation processes for boron elimination. Boron Separation Processes fills this gap and provides a unique and single source that highlights the growing and competitive importance of these processes. For the first time, the reader is able to see in one reference work the state-of-the-art research in this rapidly growing field. The book focuses on four main areas: Effect of boron on humans and plants Separation of boron by ion exchange and adsorption processes Separation of boron by membrane processes Simulation and optimization studies for boron separation Provides in one source a state-of-the-art overview of this compelling area Reviews the environmental impact of boron before introducing emerging boron separation processes Includes simulation and optimization studies for boron separation processes Describes boron separation processes applicable to specific sources, such as seawater, geothermal water and wastewater

Book Synopsis Handbook on Borates by : M. P. Chung
Download or read book Handbook on Borates written by M. P. Chung and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boron is a naturally-occurring element. It is typically combined with other substances to form borates, including boric acid, salts of borates, and boron oxide. Boron is released naturally into the environment by oceans, volcanoes, and geothermal steam. It is also mined and used by many industries. Borates are used largely to produce glass. Boric acid is used in flame retardants, medicines, pesticides, and wood preservatives. Low-dose exposure can cause respiratory and skin irritation, vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, and headaches. Borates have not been thoroughly tested for health effects in humans, but the EPA has found potential developmental toxicity (especially on the testes). Borates are considered safer to human health and the environment than other flame retardants (like PBDEs and PCBs) and wood preservatives (like arsenic). This new and important book gathers the latest research from around the globe in the study of borates with a focus on such topics as: boron-based wood preservatives and their uses, molecular aspects of boron treatment technologies, alkaline earth borates, borate toxicity and effect on drug stability and others.

Download or read book Borate Glasses written by L. D. Pye and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boron Oxide plays a key role in numerous glasses of high technological importance, yet its role in glass structure is far from clear. Indeed, in recent years there have been serious chal lenges to previous structure concepts for both crystalline and glassy borates. These challenges were sufficient to warrant a re examination of the structure of borate glasses using the most pow erful tools currently available. To provide a suitable forum for this undertaking, a four-day conference on "Boron in Glass and Glass Ceramics" was convened at Alfred University, June 3-8, 1977 to review the best scientific thinking on structure and to debate conflicting views and discuss properties and applications of borate glasses. This conference was also the first in a New University series on Glass Science to be rotated among Alfred University, The Pensyl vania State University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the University of Missouri-Rolla. The present volume represents the proceedings of the first conference in this series. The volume begins with a review of the remarkable contribution of Jan Krogh-Moe to the understanding of the structure of Borate glasses. This review, authored by Professor N. J. Kreidl, concludes by dedicating the proceedings of this conference as a Krogh-Moe Fest schrift. The volume continues with a historical review by D. L. Griscom, originally prepared for circulation to the contributors prior to the conference. An Epilogue to the opening chapter brings the survey up-to-date in light of the conference papers.

Download or read book Boronic Acids written by Dennis G. Hall and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-05-12 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, the whole field of organoboronic acids is presented in one comprehensive handbook. Professor Dennis Hall, a rising star within the community, covers all aspects of this important substance class, including applications in chemistry, biology and medicine. Starting with an introduction to the structure, properties, and preparation of boronic acid derivatives, together with an overview of their reactions and applications, the book goes on to look at metal-catalyzed borylation of alkanes and arenas, coupling reactions and rhodium-catalyzed additions of boronic acids to alkenes and carbonyl compounds. There follows chapters on copper-promoted C-O and C-N cross-coupling of boronic acids, recent applications in organic synthesis, as well as alpha-haloalkylboronic esters in asymmetric synthesis. Later sections deal with cycloadditions, organoboronic acids, oxazaborolidines as asymmetric inducers, and boronic acid based receptors and sensors. The whole is rounded off with experimental procedures, making this invaluable reading for organic, catalytic and medicinal chemists, as well as those working in organometallics.
