Book excerpt: The Charlton Hunt began in the 1670s and is the earliest documented pack of hounds to be entered to fox alone. It attained a popularity among the gentry which has never been equalled. From the reign of Charles II, almost every noble family in the land had a representative at Charlton, including almost half of the Knights of the Garter. Its first proprietor had been the ill-fated Duke of Monmouth, but among other claims to uniqueness, it was the first hunt to establish a club, the members building themselves a dining hall.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Old Charlton Hunt IN a deed box at Goodwood there has lain, undisturbed for many years, a bundle of old papers and letters, tattered and discoloured with age, and in some cases almost illegible, but possessing for myself a most absorbing interest, for they represent all that remains to chronicle the forgotten glories of the old Charlton Hunt. And though I feel that the matter contained in them must be of greater interest to local sportsmen than to the hunting world in general, yet I have been tempted to reproduce them as nearly as possible word for word with the originals; for it seemed to me, as I struggled with the queer crabbed writing of the old yellow manuscripts, that the quaint Spelling and phraseology would surely have some degree of fascination for hunting men of the present day, many Of whom would find constant mention of their forbears throughout these pages. But had it not been for the assistance given me in my researches by a most excellent and concise little pamphlet entitled Charlton and the Charlton Hunt, ' published some years ago by Mr. T. I. Bennett, my task would have been much harder; and so, bearing this in mind, I place the said pamphlet before the reader first of all, forming as it does a key to much that follows. Book Synopsis George Stubbs, Painter by : Judy Egerton
Download or read book George Stubbs, Painter written by Judy Egerton and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Stubbs is one of the greatest of British eighteenth-century painters, with a deep and unaffected sympathy for country life and the English countryside. This fully illustrated book outlines his career, followed by a catalogue raisonne (the first since Sir Walter Gilbey's short listing of 1898) of all his known works. One of the stickiest labels in the history of British art attached itself to Stubbs as 'Mr Stubbs the horse painter'. Over half of his paintings were of horses, each founded on the pioneering observations assembled (in 1766) in his book The Anatomy of the Horse; but Stubbs's wide-ranging subjects included portraits, conversation pieces and paintings of exotic animals from the Zebra to the Rhinoceros, as well as an extraordinarily sympathetic series of portraits of dogs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women have battled for a place in the male-dominated world of sports throughout the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, overturning obstacles and highlighting the changing position of women in societies around the world. This has become one of the defining stories of our age and the central story of women’s sports. They Run with Surprising Swiftness tells a different and much older, forgotten story with many of the same themes. Sports have never been the sole preserve of men; women athletes have always been there. As this book shows, throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Britain, women of all ages ran, fought, rode, played football, cricket, tennis, and other sports. They competed in tough, head-to-head events that required extraordinary endurance and skill. Though not labeled "athletic" at the time, these women performed feats that in our age would certainly earn that descriptor. They Run with Surprising Swiftness recognizes these remarkable athletes and their achievements and aims to restore them to their rightful place in the long history of women in sport.
Download or read book Glorious Goodwood written by James Peill and published by Constable. This book was released on 2019-06-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Delightful' A HISTORY BOOK OF THE YEAR / BOOK OF THE WEEK, Daily Mail 'Goodwood curator James Peill writes with a wonderfully light touch . . . The Goodwood story is extraordinary and rightly celebrated' Country Life The history of Goodwood, England's greatest sporting estate Goodwood has been the home of English sport for centuries. The story of how a small hunting lodge became the iconic location for the globally-renowned Festival of Speed, Glorious Goodwood and Goodwood Revival events is inextricably intertwined with the tale of the Dukes of Richmond. The Dukes were, variously, patrons of the arts, political influencers, royal confidantes, architectural innovators, horticultural enthusiasts and stewards of the community. Above all, they were passionate about the sports for which Goodwood is best known: horseracing, motor sports, foxhunting, cricket, shooting and golf. Drawing upon the wealth of the Goodwood archives, James Peill vividly captures the character of each Duke, some radical and others staunchly traditional, and the wide-ranging impact they had on the Goodwood of today. The broader context is a sweeping history of England, and one family's part in it. Beginning with Charles II and his mistress Louise de Keroualle, the parents of the first Duke, Glorious Goodwood takes the reader on a journey through time, from the seventeenth century to present day, via the Jacobite Rising, the Battle of Waterloo and the First and Second World Wars. There are cameo appearances from George Stubbs, Canaletto, Alexander, Emperor of Russia, Queen Victoria, Jackie Stewart and Edward VII, who famously hosted Privy Council meetings in the Tapestry Drawing Room during race week. Glorious Goodwood is a vivid and intimate portrait of a house and its inhabitants set against a dazzling, panoramic backdrop of English history. At the heart of this colourful and compelling story is a rich sense of the British heritage Goodwood embodies.
