Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Drawing on a comparative study of hospital records, Charity and the London Hospitals investigates how and why Victorians contributed in order to show that benevolence was rarely amenable to a single form or reason. Whilst charity remained central to the hospitals' raison d'etre, philanthropy's contribution was modified at a financial and administrative level as hospitals shifted from being philanthropic to medical institutions. Why this process occurred and the impact of professionalisation and scientific medicine are assessed."--BOOK JACKET.
Book Synopsis Sin, Organized Charity and the Poor Law in Victorian England by : R. Humphreys
Download or read book Sin, Organized Charity and the Poor Law in Victorian England written by R. Humphreys and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-07-17 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politicians, social administrators, economists, biographers and historians have shared the belief that the Charity Organisation Society effectively rationalised relief to the Victorian poor and illustrated the advantages of caring voluntarism over impersonal state handouts. It is now clear that in provincial England these impressions were illusory. The alleged sinful profligacy of other charitable bodies was persistently condemned by the Charity Organisation Society for fostering latant sin amongst the poor. By exposing how they failed in practice to satisfy their own prescriptions for appropriate poor relief this volume asks whether the Charity Organisation Society were themselves morally equipped to castigate others about sin.
Book Synopsis Poor Relief and Charity 1869-1945 by : R. Humphreys
Download or read book Poor Relief and Charity 1869-1945 written by R. Humphreys and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-10-31 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume challenges many widely held beliefs about the efficacy of the London Charity Organization Society. Politicians, social administrators, sociologists, economists, biographers and historians have been swayed by the strength of their propaganda. The Charity Organization Society continues to be used as an institutional model to illustrate the alleged advantages of voluntarism over state benefits. Poor Relief and Charity 1869-1945 exposes the misleading nature of many of its claims. It explains why they were shunned by other charities, treated with suspicion by parish clergy, disregarded by poor law guardians and seen as little different from the stigmatized poor law by those in need.

Book Synopsis The Philosophy of the State and the Practice of Welfare by : Helen Bosanquet
Download or read book The Philosophy of the State and the Practice of Welfare written by Helen Bosanquet and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unemployment, poverty and the role of the state were themes which structured the discourse of social theory and the developing social legislation in Britain at the end of the Victorian period and the early twentieth century. This collection examines the neglected contribution of Bernard and Helen Bosanquet to that contemporary maelstrom of ideas about the condition of the people, the process of social reform and the practice of social work. Like their contemporaries Sidney and Beatrice Webb, the Bosanquets were a significant partnership integrating philosophy and practice, theory and action. Bernard Bosanquet, the Idealist philosopher, is best known for his study The Philosophical Theory of the State. His wife Helen, economist and social worker, was a member of the Royal Commission on the Poor Laws (1905-9) and between 1909 and 1921, editor of the Charity Organisation Review. Themselves selective supporters of state welfare schemes, they helped to re-fashion the Charity Organisation Society away from its nineteenth century individualism by their advocacy of organic social collectivism. But character, self development and responsibility remained central tenets of their welfare programme. This collection re-publishes most of the Bosanquets' principal books and articles relating to the philosophy of the state and the practice of welfare. The development of their ideas in the context of their own time, and their relevance to current debates in the theory and practice of welfare, forms the basis of a substantial introduction by David Gladstone, the series editor. This Volume looks at social work and charity.
