This book was released on 2008 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wood plastic composites (WPCs) are composite materials made from thermoplastic polymers, wood flour, and a small amount of process- and property-enhancing additives; they are principally used in the automotive industry and as secondary building materials. Although the WPC market is expected to keep growing, it is still relatively small when compared with other building materials. Challenges for increasing the market share of WPCs include relatively low tensile strength and stiffness, significant long-term creep deformations and weak creep rupture properties. A significant barrier to obtain better understanding of the composite performance and internal bond durability is the lack of reliable tools and procedures for direct quantitative measurement of the micro-mechanical response of this heterogeneous material. The objective of this study was to use advanced imaging tools, including X-ray computed tomography (CT) and conventional microscopy for quantitative morphological characterization of WPCs, with the focus on developing methodologies for reliable characterization of component phases and internal damage generated by accelerated weathering and cyclic loading. One of the primary concerns in X-ray CT scanning of WPCs is the poor contrast between the wood and polyethylene, which is the most common polymer for the WPC matrix. The objective of the first part of the thesis was to investigate the applicability of fine gold particles as contrast agent. Specifically, the effects of adding gold nano- and micro-particles, and commonly used surfactant on the mechanical properties of WPCs was assessed. Technically pure gold micro-particles was found to be an effective contrast agent for X-ray CT scanning of wood/HDPE composites. When used without surfactant, the addition of 1% gold particles did not impair the tensile properties of the composites. In order to establish effective experimental methodologies for morphological characterization of WPCs in the second part of the project, various imaging tools, including X-ray CT scanning, optical and electron microscopy were applied to examine wood particles embedded in the polymer matrix. Scans and images of uncompounded wood particles were used for reference. Such a combination of the imaging tools assisted in confirmation of the existence of an extensive wood/polymer interphase within the wood particles. Using the X-ray CT scanning, the combined volume of the interphase was quantitatively determined to be about 56% of the wood particle volume. This knowledge is critically needed for the proper assessment of the wood particle content from the CT scans. The third part of the thesis reports on a research which is not part of the original MS project, and is still in progress. This part was included to demonstrate how the conclusions and methods derived in the previous two parts are applied in further research. Here, the X-ray CT scanning technique is applied to examine the morphological changes in WPCs resulting from accelerated weathering treatment and cyclic loading. It was found that significant initial tensile modulus loss in wood/PVC composites may be induced by the relatively low number of accelerated soak-dry and freeze-thaw weathering cycles. Although no significant modulus loss was observed for the specimens subjected to cyclic tensile loading, the reduced residual strength indicated a significant damage accumulation. In summary, X-ray CT scanning was found to be a promising and effective nondestructive technique for 3D in situ examination and morphological characterization of WPCs. The experimental methodologies employing various imaging tools (including X-ray CT scanning and 2D microscopy) and digital image processing methods are capable of characterizing WPCs, its component phases and the interphase returning statistically meaningful quantitative data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the important characteristics affecting many materials including wood, plastic, and wood-plastic composites is their time-dependent behavior. This behavior can be divided into two separate, yet related, phenomena known as creep and creep-rupture. Creep is the increase in deformation over time while subjected to a sustained load. Creep-rupture, or load-duration behavior, is the eventual failure to sustain a constant load due to increased deformation over time. Both have a considerable effect on wood-plastic composite members and must be accounted for in design. The load-duration, or creeprupture, behavior of wood and traditional wood composite products has been studied extensively by numerous researchers, and simplified design procedures to account for both effects are in place. However, the load-duration behavior of composite products made out of the combination of wood and plastic is not well understood or documented. Currently, wood-plastic composite products are available on the commercial market, yet no standardized design procedures to account for creep or duration-of-load effects exist. Given the lack of understanding of the load-duration behavior of wood-plastic composites, a research effort was initiated to investigate the load-duration behavior of various wood-plastic composite formulations and to compare the observed behavior to that of solid sawn lumber. An exponential damage rate model commonly used for solid wood was found to similarly describe the load-duration effect for wood-plastic composites. Proposed adjustment factors were developed following existing procedures for wood products. It was also found that the current adjustment factors, as found in the 1997 edition of the National Design Specification for Wood Construction, can be conservatively applied to wood-plastic composite products, although the adjustment is overly conservative for the materials tested. However, applying adjustment factors based on a short-duration loading was found to be non-conservative. Rate-of-load effects on flexural properties were also experimentally investigated. It was found that a rate-of-load effect existed for both modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity over certain ranges of load-rate values. A rate-of-loading corresponding to 0.01 mm/mm/min was found to produce representative material properties that were slightly conservative

Book excerpt: Terahertz (THz) technology is an active area of research, but only in recent years has the application of THz waves (T waves) in food and agricultural industries been explored. Terahertz Technology: Principles and Applications in the Agri-Food Industry describes the operating principles of THz technology and discusses applications and advantages of the THz regime of the electromagnetic spectrum for use in the agri-food industry. The agri-food industry is focusing on the development of non-destructive quality evaluation techniques that can provide accurate analysis quickly and are environmentally friendly. Among such techniques is THz technology that provides a novel noninvasive approach to quality assessment and safety assurance of agri-food products. The low energy of T waves is best suited for the analysis of sensitive biomaterials and does not cause photoionization. Therefore, THz imaging is complementary to X-ray imaging. Although accessing the THz spectrum is tedious by conventional devices, the combination of optics and electronics principles has opened a dimension of research in this field. This book provides an overview of THz spectroscopy and imaging, system components, types of THz systems, and applications and advantages of THz for applications in the agri-food industry. It describes the basic working mechanism, operating principle, operation modes, and system components of THz spectroscopy and imaging. Various advancements in THz technology related to agricultural and food applications are discussed that could serve as a guidebook for all those working and interested in non-destructive food assessment techniques. Key Features: Explores broader applications of the THz regime in the agri-food sector Describes system components, different forms of THz systems, and the working principle of T waves for spectroscopic and imaging techniques Provides insights on future research needs for industrial implementation of THz technology Complements the knowledge of other existing non-destructive spectroscopy and imaging techniques for food analysis Although books on biomedical applications of THz have been published, no book is available that deals with applications in the agri-food industry. Hence, Terahertz Technology is beneficial for undergraduate and graduate students and those food industry professionals involved in research related to non-destructive quality assessment and imaging techniques.

Book excerpt: Some of the futuristic applications are nanotubes for electrically conductive coatings and to increase the rate of reaction of thermoset resins; organosilane dendrimer coatings; buckyball coatings for machine parts; and metals for conductive coatings in inks. The technology is limited to substantially specialized applications due to the high cost per unit volume needed to reduce the size of the particles and the need to add surface modifiers to prevent the particles from agglomerating. Recent research efforts focus primarily on the functionalization of the particle surface of the nanoparticles to make them more compatible with the coating resin systems, so that easy dispersion, low viscosity, and covalent bonding are provided between the particles and the resins.
