Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Character of Queen Victoria The natural order of history; and it is when it has done its worst, and the solitude is most blank around a royal coffin, that we begin to see what the robes and pageantry concealed. Was it a human being at all? Was it worthy of the idolatry it awakened? How much of the worship was paid to a woman, and how much to a fetish? In the ut terances of a loyal and justly emotional press, we have heard the last and least-measured accents of a praise that was too closely allied with pain and grief to analyse or to discriminate. But reason tells us that this cannot last. It tells us that Queen Victoria must, in her turn, take her place among all the other great preceding figures, who are judged not as what they seemed to be, but as what they were. It appears to us that the time has come to begin to abandon the note of purely indis criminate praise, and to put even this revered per sonage into the crucible of criticism - to endeav our, in other words, to note, without any blind or sycophantic laudation, what were the elements, and what the evolution of her character. We can try to do so with the more perfect serenity, seeing that by such treatment it has scarcely anything to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Married Life of Queen Victoria The married life Of an individual predicates a second individual, and this volume is as much a con sideration Of the Character of the Prince Consort as Of that Of Queen Victoria. Though in his youth he pro fessed liberal tendencies, the Prince was a strong up holder Of Monarchy, and resisted with all his strength anything that he considered an encroachment on the powers Of the Crown. He went further, for his life in England was, On one side of it, a long attempt to put back the hands Of the clock and reinstate authority which had already been delegated to Parliament. Had the Prince lived long, the history Of England would have been very different from what it is, for either our Parliament would have succumbed to his ideals, and England would have become reactionary, or the struggle between the people and the Crown would have ended in the abolition of the Monarchy; and it is not difficult to believe which part the English people would have chosen in the critical time Of thirty and forty years ago. The pair became introduced when she asked him to write a book about her late husband, Albert. As one of the longest-ruling queens Britain has ever had, Martin had great respect for her and wished to show the human side of the monarch in this matter-of-fact book. This book is a useful tool for history lovers and those who wish to learn more about this important figure.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beautiful Life and Illustrious Reign of Queen Victoria The purpose of this work is to furnish the reader an ample yet con venient biography of Queen Victoria, the greatest of all the English monarchs for several centuries, if not for all time, and to accompany the biography with such historical matter as will serve to indicate the won derful progress of the British Empire during the reign which has given to the nineteenth century the recognized name of The Victorian Era. The life of the Queen and the history of her realm were so inextricably mingled that no volume would serve fully which failed to take cogni zance of her reign as a monarch as truly as of her personality as a woman. In brief, then, this work may be accepted as an account of the personal life of Victoria of the House of Guelph, her domestic relations as child, maiden, wife, mother and widow, her tastes and abilities, her characteristics and her friendships, and at the same time as a history of the British Empire during the period of her long occupancy of the throne. Her influence upon domestic legislation, her stand for peace with other powers when wars threatened, her friendship for the United States which served us well in the days of the war between North and South, the loyalty of the colonies throughout the world, which bound the British Empire into a unity stronger than laws could do, all these facts are emphasized in due proportion to their importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Personal Life of Queen Victoria The aim of the writer of this "Life" has been to narrate those incidents which tend most to reveal the personal history and character of the Queen, and no attempt has been made to deal with the events of her reign which belong more to the historian than to the personal biographer. In writing of one so illustrious and far removed from ordinary acquaintance and observation, the difficulties of faithful portraiture are apparent; but the frank manner in which Her Majesty has revealed the details of her domestic life in Sir Theodore Martin's "Life of the Prince Consort," the two volumes of "Leaves from Our Journal in the Highlands," and the "Memoir of Princess Alice," makes the task easier. In addition to these sources of information, I am indebted to the "Greville Memoirs," the "Life of Baron Stockmar." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queen Victoria a Biography This work is based on the biographical notice of Queen Victoria which was published in the third Supplementary Volume of the Dictionary of National Biography' in October 1901. I undertook that article at the earnest request of the public-spirited proprietor of the Dictionary, the late Mr. George Smith, who impressed on me the imperative need of observing in the notice of the Queen that sense of proportion and that regard for exact detail which distinguished other contributions to the 'dictionary, ' and were essential characteristics of its general scheme. I set to work on the memoir with some misgiving. I was fully conscious of its difficulty. But I did What I could to execute the task in the spirit in which it was confided to me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queen Victoria: Scenes From Her Life and Reign To give even an outline of all the events and all the wonderful progress made during the long reign of Queen Victoria would require many volumes, and in the limits of one small book it is possible to glance only at its principal events. Comparatively little can be said of the life of the Queen as a woman, and yet it is as a woman rather than as a Queen that her influence has been most influential over the people she ruled. Her domestic virtues, the purity of her life, her example as a wife and a mother, her sympathy with her people on all occasions of distress and suffering have given her a place in their hearts such as no monarch ever before possessed; and her death has been mourned, not only as that of a Queen, but of a woman privately and personally most dear to us all. Her virtues have gained for her the admiration and respect of people of all nations, and the outburst of sorrow universally exhibited upon the news of her death is a far higher recognition of her worth than any written tribute can be. Book excerpt: Lytton Strachey's Queen Victoria revolutionised the art of biography by using elements of romantic fiction and melodrama to create a warm, humorous and very human portrait of an iconic figure. We see Victoria as a strong-willed child with a famous temper, as the 18-year-old girl queen, as a monarch, wife, mother and widow. Equally fascinating are the depictions of her relationships: with her governess precious Lehzen, with Peel, Gladstone and Disraeli, with her beloved Albert and, in later life, her legendary devotion to her Highland servant John Brown, all of which show a different side of her staid, pious image.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queen Victoria: Scenes and Incidents of Her Life and Reign ON the zoth of June, 1887, Queen Victoria will, we trust, complete the fiftieth or Jubilee Year of her reign, and in anticipation of that time, it has been thought that a book descriptive of the chief scenes and incidents of her life might suitably be published. Owing to the seclusion in which the Queen has mostly lived for some years past, many of the present generation have never seen her, and have no very vivid idea of her as a real person. Whether or not they will know her any better after reading this volume remains to be seen. It is not intended as a book for children, but for those young people who are old enough to take an intelligent view of facts and events. At the same time it is hoped that it will meet with acceptance at the hands of those who can remember many of the events here briefly recorded. To millions who were not her people the words "the Queen" do not bring even yet the thought of the well-beloved woman who now shares the English throne, but rather of her who for nearly sixty-four years wore the crown of Great Britain and gave freely to her country of the gift that was in her. Other women have been controlled by devotion to duty, other women have been moved to action by readiness of sympathy, but few have united so harmoniously a strong determination to do the right with a never-failing gentleness, a childlike sympathy with unyielding strength purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Queen Victoria: Reproduced From "the Times" With Photogravure Illustrations Queen Victoria was a ruler of a new type. When she ascended the throne the popular faith in Kings and Queens was on the decline. She revived that faith; she consolidated her throne; she not only captivated the affections of the multitude, but won the respect of thoughtful men; and all this she achieved by methods which to her predecessors would have seemed impracticable - methods which it required no less shrewdness to discover than force of character and honesty of heart to adopt steadfastly. A Court jester once remarked that it was better for a country to be governed by a Queen than by a King, for in the latter case the influence of women would prevail, whereas in the former the ascendency Of men was sure to make itself felt. Queen Victoria illustrated this maxim in a way never con templated by the humourist, for she lived all her life subject to the guidance of wise men. But to accept the guidance of the wise is in itself a sign Of too rare wisdom. The Queen was no woman Of placid temperament who could remain indifferent to public affairs so long as her domestic concerns were not interfered with. T O imagine that she divested herself of all responsibilities and secured to herself a peaceful life by doing, without reflection, whatever her Ministers advised, would be absolutely to misunderstand her intelligent, sensitive nature, and to ascribe grand results to very petty causes. It is with good advice as with other commodities - the best is given to those who want the best and can judge Of its quality; and whilst all who approached the Queen have borne witness to her candour and reasonableness in relations with her Ministers, all have likewise proclaimed how anxiously she con sidered advice that was submitted to her before letting herself be persuaded that she must accept it for the good of her people. By thus acting she put statesmen on their mettle, and raised the level of public morality. We know how in private life our conduct may be regulated by the fear of Offending some person who claims no absolute authority to check us, but whose good opinion we highly value. Coming from such a quarter a look of astonishment, a criticism conveyed under the form of a mild question, or mere silence, are potent means of control and it was mainly this kind Of control that the Queen exercised over public men, in many cases with signal benefit, throughout her long reign. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Her Majesty Queen Victoria: Compiled From All Available Sources The approaching Jubilee of the Queen's reign offers a favourable Opportunity for relating the story of her Majesty's life. This I have endeavoured to trace in the following pages. All sources of information have been consulted, and I have dealt as fully as possible with the inner life of the Sovereign from the time of childhood to that of mature age. Although deprived of a father's care in her infancy, it will be seen how, in her early years, she was tended by the loving ministrations of a wise mother. The chapter Victoria Regina gives a full account of her accession to the throne, while the one immediately ensuing deals with her happy marriage, when she found a devoted partner in the Prince Consort, and one able to guide her in important matters as well as to sustain her by his affection. Succeeding chapters show the home life of. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
