Download or read book For Love and Money written by Carl Corey and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-03-24 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his follow-up to Tavern League: Portraits of Wisconsin Bars, Carl Corey turns his camera on Wisconsin family-owned businesses in existence fifty years or longer. The businesses portrayed here—bakeries and barbecue joints, funeral homes and furniture builders, cheesemakers, fishermen, ferry boat drivers—have survived against all the odds, weathering tough economic times and big-business competition. The owners are loyal to their employees, their families, and themselves. And they are integral to their local economies and social fabric. The services and goods they provide are usually for neighbors and friends. Generations serve generations, creating lasting relationships and strong, vibrant neighborhoods and rural communities. In For Love and Money, Carl Corey provides indelible glimpses of an increasingly endangered way of life. The Museum of Wisconsin Art’s Graham Reid has said, “As current and future generations come and go, these pictures will survive in the hands of the subjects, collectors, museums, and galleries. Will the businesses featured enjoy a similar longevity? Only time will tell, and we can only watch and hope, but Carl Corey has ensured that they will not be forgotten.”

Book Synopsis Old-Time Music Makers of New York State by : Simon J. Bronner
Download or read book Old-Time Music Makers of New York State written by Simon J. Bronner and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ask an old-timer what life was like in rural upstate New York during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and you will hear about the dances and bees that brought villagers and farmers together. You will hear of favorite fiddlers who held center stage with dance tunes taken from early British and American sources. You will hear of old-time music and its significance to a people making the transition from a rural, agricultural life to an urban, industrial one. Old-Time Music Makers of New York State is the first book published on this rich legacy of traditional Anglo-American music and dance. It traces the development of old-time music beginning with its movement into New York State from New England in the early nineteenth century and to its combination with commercial country music in the twentieth century. Exploring the regional character of the music and its meaning co the people who enjoy it, Bronner introduces memorable figures from the major periods in the development of old-time music, and he places their stories, their lives, and their music in the context of the region's cultural and historical changes. This is much more than a regional study, however. Bronner brings to the fore issues of national scope and interest. He discusses the relationship of old-time music to the commercial country music with which it has been closely aligned, and he challenges the prevailing wisdom that the origins of country music are in the South. Musician, fan, folklorist, and historian alike will benefit from and enjoy this book. The many musical transcriptions, annotations, photographs, and appendixes provide a valuable reference to be used again and again.
Book Synopsis Lost Restaurants of Seattle by : Chuck Flood
Download or read book Lost Restaurants of Seattle written by Chuck Flood and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-25 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An expert in Americana explores the legendary eateries of Seattle’s past, from culinary pioneers to neighborhood haunts, roadside diners, and more. From the nineteenth century to today, Seattle has been home to some of the finest oyster houses, dining rooms, and lunch counters in America. It has seen them come and, in many cases, watched them go. In Lost Restaurants of Seattle, author Chuck Flood celebrates nearly a thousand of Seattle's vanished eateries, along with a few resilient survivors. Exploring their cuisines and recipes, Flood tells of how Manca's Café invented the irresistible Dutch Baby pancake, while Trader Vic's gained reverence for its legendary Mai Tais. And with wonderful historic images, she shows why places like the railroad car–themed Andy's Diner and the Twin T-P's with its iconic wigwam-shaped dining rooms live on in the city's culinary memory long after their departure.

Book Synopsis And This Is My Friend Sandy by : Deborah Philips
Download or read book And This Is My Friend Sandy written by Deborah Philips and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book situates the production of The Boy Friend and the Players' Theatre in the context of a post-war London and reads The Boy Friend, and Wilson's later work, as exercises in contemporary camp. It argues for Wilson as a significant and transitional figure both for musical theatre and for modes of homosexuality in the context of the pre-Wolfenden 1950s. Sandy Wilson's The Boy Friend is one of the most successful British musicals ever written. First produced at the Players' Theatre Club in London in 1953 it transferred to the West End and Broadway, making a star out of Julie Andrews and gave Twiggy a leading role in Ken Russell's 1971 film adaptation. Despite this success, little is known about Wilson, a gay writer working in Britain in the 1950s at a time when homosexuality was illegal. Drawing on original research assembled from the Wilson archives at the Harry Ransom Center, this is the first critical study of Wilson as a key figure of 1950s British theatre. Beginning with the often overlooked context of the Players' Theatre Club through to Wilson's relationship to industry figures such as Binkie Beaumont, Noël Coward and Ivor Novello, this study explores the work in the broader history of Soho gay culture. As well as a critical perspective on The Boy Friend, later works such as Divorce Me, Darling!, The Buccaneer and Valmouth are examined as well as uncompleted musical versions of Pygmalion and Goodbye to Berlin to give a comprehensive and original perspective on one of British theatre's most celebrated yet overlooked talents.
