Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Changeless Christ, and Other Sermons And first of all we may say that Christ is a proper object of scientific investiga tion. The objects of scientific research and exposition are phenomena, facts and forces. With all reverence be it said, Jesus Christ is each and all of these. In his historic appearance and abiding influence he is a phenomenon to be observed and explained; in his actual life and works and the effects still produced by him he is a fact beyond dispute; and in the great changes and results consequent upon his appearance and life he is a force to be reckoned with. True, that which is to he hath already been true, there is nothing new under the sun but just as in the physical world the infinite variety of creatures and things are all made out of a few very Simple elements, so, in our lives, out of a comparatively small number of possible incidents, an immense variety of combinations results, with the effect that. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Finality of Christ and Other Sermons "For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that ye through His poverty might become rich." - 2 Cor. viii. 9. There is a tremendous theology involved in this simple statement which we cannot evade. It does not say that Jesus was poor, but that He became poor: it was a piece of voluntary renunciation. But when was Jesus rich, and when did He become poor? There is no possibility of referring this act of renunciation to His earthly life; it can only refer to the act of the Incarnation by which He surrendered His heavenly glory and His Divine majesty, and adopted not only human life, but a life of poverty. Here we have the doctrine of the pre-existence of Jesus indubitably implied, a pre-existence which for the moment St. Paul is content to define as one of richness. And what a light it throws upon St. Paul's use of the word grace. It stresses its condescension, its voluntary and spontaneous choice, the artistic beauty with which the act of renunciation was made. We need all the fulness which the word holds in New Testament usage to bring out what it here contains. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ's Musts: And Other Sermons I Have chosen this text for the sake of one word in it, that solemn must which was so often on our Lord's lips. I have no purpose of dealing with the remainder of this clause, nor, indeed, with it at all, except as one instance of His use of the expression. But I felt it might be interesting, and might set old truths in a brighter light, if we gather together the instances in which Christ speaks of the great necessity which dominated His life, and shaped even small acts. The expression is most frequently used in reference to the Passion and Resurrection. There are many instances in the other Gospels, in which He speaks of that must. The first of these is that of my text. Then there is another class, of which His word to His mother when a twelve-year-old child may be taken as a type, "Wist ye not that I must be about My Father's business?" Book excerpt: Excerpt from Triumphant Certainties: And Other Sermons Then there is a further step to be taken, and that is that this sonship of God, which is the result of being born agam, Is mediated and received by us through our faith. Remember the prologue of John's gospel, where, as a great musician will hint all his subsequent themes in his overture, he gathers up in one all the main threads and points of his teaching. There he says, To as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God. Long years afterwards, when an old man in Ephesus, he writes down in this last chapter of his first epistle the same truth which he there set blazing in the forefront of his gospel when he says, in the first verse of this chapter, Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. On condition, then, of a man's faith in Jesus Christ, there is communicated to him a new life direct from God, kindred with the Divine, and which dwells in him, and works in him precisely in the measure of his personal faith. That is the first point that I desire to establish. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wearied Christ and Other Sermons Two pictures result from these two verses, each striking in itself, and gaining additional emphasis by the contrast. It was near the close of a long, hot days march that a tired band of pedestrians turned into the fertile valley. There, whilst the disciples went into the little hill-village to purchase, if they could, some food from the despised inhabitants, Jesus, apparently too exhausted to accompany them, "sat thus on the well." That little word thus seems to have a force difficult to reproduce in English. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. If there ever was a Being, wearing the human form and living among men, who knew Himself and why He came here it was the Man Christ Jesus. He always walked in the shadow of the Cross He never forgot that He came here to, do the Father's will. Self-knowledge is the most difficult knowledge which men ever attain. There is no sphynx in Egypt like the sphynx in a man's bosom. Men think too much or too little of them selves. They pride themselves on being What they are not: on having a Sphere which is not theirs. They undertake to do what they can not do they leave undone What they might do. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Witness of Jesus and Other Sermons The noblest and most enduring record which any man can leave behind him, when he has finished his earthly labors, is the influence which his life has made on other lives, which, transmitted from one generation to another, be comes a perpetual force for good while the world stands. While such a record is not traceable for human eyes in all its wide and subtle ramifications, it is none the less real and potent. A consecrated personality is the mightiest force for the uplifting of humanity which this world has ever known or can know. A good man is God's best gift to the world. Such a man cannot live and labor and suffer and die without putting into active operation good influences which, embodied in other lives, become permanent factors working for the world's redemption. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Message of Peace, and Other Christians Sermons The Song of the Angels was the first public preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Its advent had been announced privately to those who were elected to be its instrument, in dream and vision, in angelic salutation, in inspirations of the Holy Ghost. To Zacharias in the Temple, to Mary in the secret chamber, in the night watches to Joseph, in the joy of her unborn child to Elisabeth, the assurance of its approach had been given. It had been recognized and welcomed in words such as had never yet burst from the hearts of men, from human gladness, from human hope My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my.
