Book excerpt: The afferent connections of the cerebellar cortex of the cat have been extensively in vestigated by Alf Brodal and his collaborators using retrograde degeneration methods. These experiments (reviewed in Larsell and Jansen 1972) established that cerebellar corti cal afferents arise from widespread areas of the brain stem and spinal cord. Brain stem nuclei shown to provide input to the cerebellar cortex included the pontine nuclei, the medial and descending vestibular nuclei, vestibular cell group x, the lateral reticular nucleus, the perihypoglossal nuclei, the paramedian reticular nucleus, the inferior olive, and the external cuneate nucleus. In addition, the red nucleus and certain of the raphe nuclei were thought to send fibers to the intracerebellar nuclei, but not to the cortex. With the advent of the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) technique, new information on the distribution and organization of cerebellar cortical afferents has recently be come available. Thus Gould and Graybiel (1976) demonstrated that afferents to the cat cerebellar cortex arise from a previously undescribed lateral tegmental cell group at the level of the isthmus and from the intracerebellar nuclei, as well as from the classic precerebellar nuclei. Moreover, these studies showed that fibers from the vestibular nuclei, previously thought to be distributed only to the flocculonodular lobe and uvula, reach widespread areas of the cerebellar cortex. The lone overnight flight of a ruby-throated hummingbird across the Gulf of Mexico is a migratory behavior mediated through an incredibly lengthy, repetitive series of wing move ments, each movement being produced by a complex sequence of muscle contrac tions. It is significant that these same movements may be used to mediate other behaviors, and that these same muscle contractions, in different sequence, may be used to produce other movements. The immense journey of white-bearded gnus across the Serengeti plains to suitable calving grounds is likewise a migratory behavior mediated through rather more varied, yet repetitive, limb movements, each produced by a complex sequence of muscle contractions. Again, these same movements may be used to mediate other behaviors, and again, the details of each limb movement may be varied through variations in the strength and the sequence of muscle contractions. A laboratory rat may learn to perform an escape behavior in a shuttle box, bringing its performance to a high level of efficiency by modifying its movement on successive trials. After intraperitoneal injection of pentobarbital sodium in an amount sufficient to render the animal severely incoordinated, the escape behavior is still performed, albeit through a different sequence of move ments, even to "rolling" out of the compartment in response to the warning signal.

Lesions or distortions of the system's input, which initially cause a functional disorganization, induce an active reorganization which often leads to a recovery of function. Examples of lesion-induced neural plasticity have been known for some hundred years; however, an awareness of their value as research tools is relatively new. This current interest is a consequence of rapid ly changing ideas concerning the nature of CNS organization. Out of these, concepts are emerging which describe neural nets as modifiable, highly dynamic, self-organizing structures. This trend is clearly reflected in this volume, which contains the proceedings of a symposium held in Bremen in July 1980 as a satellite meeting of the XXVIIIth International Congress of Physiological Sciences. The first part of this conference was devoted to some gen eral aspects of plasticity, discussing the current theories of functional recovery as well as morphological, neurochemical, physiological, molecular, and ontogenetic aspects. The second part dealt with lesion induced plasticity in specific sensorimotor systems of the spinal cord, brain stem, and cerebral cortex.

The projection to this area of several sense modalities which have in common their relation to posture and spatial orientation suggest the possibility of a primary cortical area of correlation. The reception, process ing, storage and output of information in man and other animals, as done by means of receptors, neurons, secretory cells and muscle fibers, are collectively referred to as mind. Sensory physiologists tend to disbelieve in extrasensory perception. Sensory physiology in general is an area upon which different sciences and methods converge. Anatomists, physiologists, psychologists, physicists, chemists, and engineers have made important contributions to sensory physiology. What is special about vestibular physiology is the fact that many research workers are clinicians, living under the constant pressure of their patient's demands. This is a disadvantage when it comes to writing handbooks, but an advantage for the pa tient, since research is guided by clinical practice and can be quickly applied. Modern methods, such as recording from single nerve units and the correlation of electrophysiological and psychophysical data, have greatly contributed to our knowledge, yet the study of lesions is still important, especially in the vestibular field.
