Book Synopsis Hazardous Child Labour in Latin America by : G.K. Lieten
Download or read book Hazardous Child Labour in Latin America written by G.K. Lieten and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-21 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to bridge the lack of information on child labour and to stimulate policy interventions the IREWOC Foundation (International Research on Working Children) has undertaken action-based research in the field of the worst forms of child labour in Latin America. In 2006 and 2007 a comparative study on the Worst Forms of Child Labour was carried out in 7 different economic sectors in Bolivia, Guatemala and Peru focussing on the hazardous worst forms. The central research objectives were as follows: • to map the working and living situations of children who are working in specific economic sectors and what the consequences of this work are for their physical and emotional wellbeing. • to investigate the reasons why these children are working in these worst forms sectors. The research results were expected to give important insights into the currently polarised debate between those who state child labour is above all related to cultural considerations and those who state that economic reasons are fundamental to the phenomena of child labour. • to map the existing policy initiatives for child labourers in the worst forms and to identify the best practices. In the face of challenges imposed by achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set by the UN, specific attention was paid to educational initiatives. Is education a useful tool in combating child labour, and vice versa, is child labour a significant obstacle to achieving universal primary education? Although the evidence from the various cases discussed in the book illustrate positive trends in terms of the worst forms of child labor, thousands of children were still found to be engaged in activities that form a direct threat to their physical, mental and moral health and jeopardize their education. This book proposes several practical recommendations for possible interventions.
Book Synopsis Managing Industrial Development Projects by : Adedeji Bodunde Badiru
Download or read book Managing Industrial Development Projects written by Adedeji Bodunde Badiru and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1993-07-07 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional public management techniques in industrial management projects are often insufficient because they cannot respond or adapt to the dynamism of modern and global markets. This guide shows how to overcome these problems by using project management techniques that expedite industrial development in regional, national, and global settings. Using real-world examples and a systems approach, the author provides a project management model that accounts for all critical interfaces in industrial development projects. He explores every aspect of project planning and organization, as well as cultural and human resource issues. Key areas discussed include how to: Schedule and control projects Conduct and evaluate project feasibility studies Select a project manager and staff the project Secure the best experts for various project functions Expedite transfer of industrial technology from developed to developing nations Coverage of budgeting and cash-flow analysis promotes understanding of the cost aspects of projects. Readers are shown how to use the Critical Path Method and Program Evaluation and Review Techniques to streamline project scheduling. They also find out how to use learning curve analysis to evaluate project performance. Guidelines on managing multinational projects are supplemented with case studies that illustrate successful industrial development in different countries. Appendices list numerous research, industrial, and economic resources, as well as United Nations information sources. Managing Industrial Development Projects paves the way for successful outcomes in countries that need them most. It is a valuable reference for practitioners, public administrators, and national policy makers, as well as students in industrial engineering, industrial administration, engineering management, and public administration programs.
Book Synopsis Non-Governmental Organizations and the State in Latin America by : Anthony Bebbington
Download or read book Non-Governmental Organizations and the State in Latin America written by Anthony Bebbington and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presents twenty specially commissioned case studies of farmer participatory approaches to agricultural innovation initiated by NGOs in Latin America. Beginning with a broad review of institutional activity at the grassroots, the authors set the case material within the context of NGO relations with the State and their contribution to democratisation and the consolidation of rural civil society. Specific questions are raised: how good/bad are NGOs at promoting technological innovation and addressing constraints to change in present agriculture?; how effective are NGOs at strengthening grassroots organizations? and how do/will donor pressures influence NGOs and their links to the State? This title is part of a series on Non-Governmental Organizations co-ordinated by the Overseas Development Institute. To complete this comprehensive review and critique there are two other regional case study volumes on Asia and Africa and an overview volume, Reluctant Partners?

Book Synopsis Rural Wage Employment in Developing Countries by : Carlos Oya
Download or read book Rural Wage Employment in Developing Countries written by Carlos Oya and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-22 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a striking scarcity of work conducted on rural labour markets in the developing world, particularly in Africa. This book aims to fill this gap by bringing together a group of contributors who boast substantial field experience researching rural wage employment in various developing countries. It provides critical perspectives on mainstream approaches to rural/agrarian development, and analysis of agrarian change and rural transformations from a long-term perspective. This book challenges the notion that rural areas in low- and middle-income countries are dominated by self-employment. It purports that this conventional view is largely due to the application of conceptual frameworks and statistical conventions that are ill-equipped to capture labour market participation. The contributions in this book offer a variety of methodological lessons for the study of rural labour markets, focusing in particular on the use of mixed methods in micro-level field research, and more emphasis on capturing occupation multiplicity. The emphasis on context, history, and specific configurations of power relations affecting rural labour market outcomes are key and reoccurring features of this book. This analysis will help readers think about policy options to improve the quantity and quality of rural wage employment, their impact on the poorest rural people, and their political feasibility in each context.
