Book excerpt: A political thriller set against the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, from the Pulitzer-nominated, bestselling author of For the Relief of Unbearable Urges. A Los Angeles Times Best Book of the Year “Blends elements of spy thriller and love story, magical realism, and an all-too-real history of one of the world’s most intractable problems: peace between Israel and its neighbors." —The Boston Globe In the Negev desert, a nameless prisoner languishes in a secret cell, his only companion the guard who has watched over him for a dozen years. Meanwhile, the prisoner’s arch nemesis—The General, Israel’s most controversial leader—lies dying in a hospital bed. From Israel and Gaza to Paris, Italy, and America, Englander provides a kaleidoscopic view of the prisoner’s unlikely journey to his cell. Dinner at the Center of the Earth is a tour de force—a powerful, wryly funny, intensely suspenseful portrait of a nation riven by insoluble conflict, and the man who improbably lands at the center of it all.

Book excerpt: A debut short story collection in the tradition of writers like Kelly Link, Aimee Bender, and George Saunders—strange, imaginative, and refreshingly original—now back in print as part of Ecco’s “Art of the Story” Series, and with a new introduction from the author Kevin Wilson’s characters inhabit a world that moves seamlessly between the real and the imagined, the mundane and the fantastic. “Grand Stand-In” is narrated by an employee of the Nuclear Family Supplemental Provider—a company that supplies “stand-ins” for families with deceased, ill, or just plain mean grandparents. And in “Blowing Up On the Spot,” a story singled out by Ann Patchett for Ploughshares, a young woman works sorting tiles at a Scrabble factory after her parents have spontaneously combusted. Southern gothic at its best, laced with humor and pathos, these wonderfully inventive stories explore the relationship between loss and death and the many ways we try to cope with both.

Even as a child, the stars on a clear, night sky brought to my mind the possibilities of interstellar travel; visits to the seaside on vacations made me think of living below the sea. This love of the impossible or in many cases, future-possible, lives in me even today, and that is why I have also tried putting some of my imagination on paper in the form of short stories. And even today, Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth remains one of my favorite works of fiction. MEET THE AUTHOR Sourya Biswas was a former risk analyst and have worked with several financial organizations of international repute, besides being a professional journalist with several articles published online. After 6 years of work, I decided to pursue my MBA from the University of Notre Dame. I have a Bachelors in Engineering from the Indian Institute of Information Technology. I'm also a member of high-IQ organizations Mensa and Triple Nine Society and am negotiating with publishers to get his science fiction work published. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Journey to the Center of the Earth, or Voyage au centre de la Terre in the original French, was published for the first time in 1864. The book was inspired by Charles Lyell's Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man of 1863. This was a period in which there was a sea-change in how scientific circles perceived the history of the earth. Biblical notions of the earth being only a few thousand years old were being gradually abandoned and the study of geological ages had begun. In that context, the book was an educational treatise in addition to an entertaining read. Though science today discounts the possibility of subterranean worlds populated by ancient creatures existing miles below our feet, it is a fascinating read nevertheless. Granted that Journey to the Center of the Earth does not seem as scientifically feasible as undersea travel presented in Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, but Jules Verne’s imagination is hard to ignore. And there’s a lot of genuine science in the story which, considering the time it was written in, is uncannily accurate. Buy a copy to keep reading!

The story involves German professor Otto Lidenbrock who believes there are volcanic tubes going toward the centre of the Earth. He, his nephew Axel, and their guide Hans descend into the Icelandic volcano Snæfellsjökull, encountering many adventures, including prehistoric animals and natural hazards. The Mysterious Island - The plot focuses on the adventures of five Americans on an uncharted island in the South Pacific. During the American Civil War, five northern prisoners of war decide to escape, during the siege of Richmond, Virginia, by hijacking a balloon. During their stay on the island, the group endures bad weather, and domesticates an orangutan, Jupiter. There is a mystery on the island in the form of an unseen deus ex machina, responsible for Cyrus' survival after falling from the balloon, the mysterious rescue of Top from a dugong, the appearance of a box of equipment (guns and ammunition, tools, etc.), and other seemingly inexplicable occurrences… Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French novelist, poet, and playwright best known for his adventure novels and his profound influence on the literary genre of science fiction.
