Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has seemed fitting to gather into this permanent form some of the memorials of the Freewill Baptist Centenary. The principal portion of the volume is composed of papers that were especially prepared to be read at the Centennial Conference in 1880, but with the probability that they would be preserved in their present shape. These include the Conference sermon, the exercises at the meeting of aged ministers, and the historical sketches of the missionary, educational, anti-slavery, temperance and Sunday school work of the denomination. The others, excepting the poems but including the tables at the close of the volume, were primarily prepared for the book where they now first appear. The papers have been written by different individuals, and although they treat of branches of work that were closely related, yet it is believed that repetition has been in the main avoided, while unity has been preserved.

Download or read book Pillars of Salt, Monuments of Grace written by Daniel A. Cohen and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative study, Daniel A. Cohen explores a major cultural shift embodied in hundreds of early New England crime publications. Tracing the declining authority of Puritan ministers, he shows how the arbiters of an increasingly pluralistic literary marketplace gradually supplanted pious execution sermons with last-speech broadsides, gallows verses, criminal autobiographies, trial reports, newspaper stories, and romantic docudramas. Pillars of Salt, Monuments of Grace probes the forgotten origins of our modern mass media's preoccupation with crime and punishment.
Book Synopsis Baptists in America by : Thomas S. Kidd
Download or read book Baptists in America written by Thomas S. Kidd and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Puritans hounded the Baptists out of Massachusetts Bay Colony. Four hundred years later, Baptists are the second-largest religious group in America, and their influence matches their numbers. Yet the historical legacy, and the inherently fractured nature of their faith, makes Baptists ever wary of threats from within as well as without. Kidd and Hankins, both practicing Baptists, weave the threads of Baptist history alongside those of American history to show how one religious denomination was transformed from persecuted minority into a leading actor on the national stage, with profound implications for American society and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strong (history of Christianity, Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, DC) tells the little known story of ecclesiastical abolitionism, an important movement during the antebellum period. It involved radical evangelical Protestants who seceded from pro-slavery denominations and reorganized themselves into independent anti-slavery congregations. He also explores how the network of churches in New York State formed a political wing as the Liberty Party and legitimized the connection between church and state. Book Synopsis Strangers and Pilgrims by : Catherine A. Brekus
Download or read book Strangers and Pilgrims written by Catherine A. Brekus and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Meuse Clay, who barely escaped a public whipping in the 1760s for preaching without a license; "Old Elizabeth," an ex-slave who courageously traveled to the South to preach against slavery in the early nineteenth century; Harriet Livermore, who spoke in front of Congress four times between 1827 and 1844--these are just a few of the extraordinary women profiled in this, the first comprehensive history of female preaching in early America. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Catherine Brekus examines the lives of more than a hundred female preachers--both white and African American--who crisscrossed the country between 1740 and 1845. Outspoken, visionary, and sometimes contentious, these women stepped into the pulpit long before twentieth-century battles over female ordination began. They were charismatic, popular preachers, who spoke to hundreds and even thousands of people at camp and revival meetings, and yet with but a few notable exceptions--such as Sojourner Truth--these women have essentially vanished from our history. Recovering their stories, Brekus shows, forces us to rethink many of our common assumptions about eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American culture.
