Excited to use the 30 days of vacation time he has accrued, he decides to fall to Earth and take on the form of a human. On Earth, Jonathan's cheerfulness and idealism collide with reality. He makes friends with the guitarist of a post-rock band, falls in love with a bookworm, and evades a governmental investigation which threatens to compromise his mission. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from their combined expertise in spirituality, psychology, astrology, history, and mythology, internationally acclaimed teacher and witch Z. Budapest and mythographer and novelist Diana Paxson have created a guide to the general trends one can expect in each year of a person's life. Organized first by decade, then specific year within each decade, Celestial Wisdom: For Every Year of Your Life gives new insight and helpful prognostications to the total sweep of the human lifespan, from birth and before to 90 and beyond. Each year has a description exploring the issues, challenges, and joys specific to it. Stories of people experiencing life at that age are woven throughout, offering insight and perspective on the dynamics at play. Each age ends with a ritual, blessing, and suggestion for how to meaningfully celebrate it, especially at birthday time. For example, are you about to turn 29? Fasten your seatbelt, Saturn is about to return to where it was when you were born and you are in for a change. The changes could come in the areas of job, relationship, or where you live. The combined cosmic knowledge of Budapest and Paxson says, "Take a deep breath - change is afoot; see how that energy of change has manifested itself in the lives of others." For your 29th birthday, they suggest, counteract that "I'm almost thirty and I haven't?" syndrome by celebrating the things you have done. Tape a big piece of butcher paper to the wall. List each year since age twenty and next to it write down what you were doing. Get some colored pencils and have a party. Your friends might just contribute and surprise you. Two pagan powerhouses reveal the wisdom of the ages in an astrological and psychological guide to each year of a woman's life. Budapest and Paxson's combined book sales top two million. Light-hearted and playful, yet grounded in years of multidisciplinary study, this book reveals surprising new insights to the possibilities of each year of our lives.
Book Synopsis Celestial Bodies by : Jokha Alharthi
Download or read book Celestial Bodies written by Jokha Alharthi and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-09-26 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celestial Bodies is the International Booker-winning and internationally bestselling novel from Jokha Alharthi. Set in the village of al-Awafi in Oman, we encounter three sisters: Mayya, who marries Abdallah after a heartbreak; Asma, who marries from a sense of duty; and Khawla who rejects all offers while waiting for her beloved, who has emigrated to Canada. These three women and their families witness Oman evolve from a traditional, slave-owning society slowly redefining itself after the colonial era, to the crossroads of its complex present. Elegantly structured and taut, Celestial Bodies is a coiled spring of a novel, telling of Oman’s coming-of-age through the prism of one family’s losses and loves. PRAISE FOR CELESTIAL BODIES "An innovative reimagining of the family saga . . . Celestial Bodies is itself a treasure house: an intricately calibrated chaos of familial orbits and conjunctions, of the gravitational pull of secrets” NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW "The great pleasure of reading Celestial Bodies is witnessing a novel argue, through the achieved perfection of its form, for a kind of inquiry that only the novel can really conduct. The ability to move freely through time, the privileged access to the wounded privacies of many characters, the striking diversity of human beings across a relatively narrow canvas, the shock waves as one generation heaves, like tectonic plates, against another, the secrets and lapses and repressions, at once intimate and historical, the power, indeed, of an investigation that is always political and always intimate―here is the novel being supremely itself, proving itself up to the job by changing not its terms of employment but the shape of the task." THE NEW YORKER "Breathtaking. The tale is replete with history, poetry, and philosophy, but also slavery, broken marriages, passion, and not-so-secret lovers." THE ATLAN

The New Times "Digger began to play... the music reminded him of the sadness he felt about his life. The humiliation of so many failures amid what he thought was a life brimming with promise... he was always going to be; but never was. Meet Jonathan "Digger" Taylor, a man who wanders from job to job, relationship to relationship, seeking-like so many of us-the intangible "something" that is missing from his life. When the restaurant he opens in Florida is wrecked in a hurricane, he moves to California, where he captions a baseball team and pays the rent with an unfulfilling waiter's job; meanwhile all his relationships with women, including his wife, share the same fate as his restaurant. Digger wants more from life, to feel connection and purpose. In the hardships that befall him Digger turns to his lifelong creative dream, composing music. But his spiritual quest is offset by a dark and increasingly menacing figure that haunts both his dream and waking worlds. Moments before a crucial make-or-break musical audition, Digger meditates to calm his jittery nerves and, in his meditation, is pursued by the ominous figure until he ducks into a door beneath a sign that reads The Celestial Bar. From that moment on, his life-and yours-will never be the same. The Celestial Bar is a richly appointed way station for souls in transition, a place where wisdom is served with a smile and our most profound hunger is sated. There Digger meets his "old and forgotten" friends: Ahmay a pony tailed Shoshone chieftain: an interactive-and holographic-computer named Ramda, a mysterious bartender called Zorinthalian: and Paula, a beautiful waitress and soul mate. In the company of this unforgettable colorful and eccentric crew, Digger is "reminded" of the basic truths called the Universal Principles-the keys to all our most searching spiritual questions. We are all beings of energy here on earth to improve ourselves spiritually, Digger learns, and in The Celestial Bar you'll learn the nuts-and-bolts on how and why-including the ways in which thought and energy interact with each other so that simple changes in focus can shift our reality profoundly. Most important you'll learn about PEIS (pronounced "peace"); the physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual parts of each of us that must be in balance to achieve true happiness and success in life. Around the globe, readers have not only been entertained, but have found the Universal Principles powerful tools for their own lives. Visit the Celestial Bar

Book excerpt: In ninety-two days, the feathered appendages that link me to the people I loathe finally come off. Dear, winglets, you will not be missed. Celeste has spent the last four years building a life outside of angelic guilds-parties, check-pursuing human ambitions instead of celestial ones-college, check-and shedding feathers across Parisian cobblestones and more recently New York sidewalks-speaking her mind, always check. She swore off angels, but the death of the woman who took her in the night Leigh died brings them soaring back into her life . . . and not just any angel but the most detestable one, the one complicit in Leigh's death-Seraph Asher. Although Celeste tells the archangel to feather off, the unreasonably pretty and obstinate man doesn't leave her alone. He returns and insists she complete her wings. When she asks him for one good reason to do so, he gives her an unbeatable one: what he did with Leigh's soul. Asher never meant to share his damning secret, but he knows it's the only way to save Celeste-the rebellious Fletching he can't get out of his head . . . or heart.

Book Synopsis Vanity Fair and the Celestial City by : Isabel Rivers
Download or read book Vanity Fair and the Celestial City written by Isabel Rivers and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-25 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress, the pilgrims cannot reach the Celestial City without passing through Vanity Fair, where everything is bought and sold. In recent years there has been much analysis of commerce and consumption in Britain during the long eighteenth century, and of the dramatic expansion of popular publishing. Similarly, much has been written on the extraordinary effects of the evangelical revivals of the eighteenth century in Britain, Europe, and North America. But how did popular religious culture and the world of print interact? It is now known that religious works formed the greater part of the publishing market for most of the century. What religious books were read, and how? Who chose them? How did they get into people's hands? Vanity Fair and the Celestial City is the first book to answer these questions in detail. It explores the works written, edited, abridged, and promoted by evangelical dissenters, Methodists both Arminian and Calvinist, and Church of England evangelicals in the period 1720 to 1800. Isabel Rivers also looks back to earlier sources and forward to the continued republication of many of these works well into the nineteenth century. The first part is concerned with the publishing and distribution of religious books by commercial booksellers and not-for-profit religious societies, and the means by which readers obtained them and how they responded to what they read. The second part shows that some of the most important publications were new versions of earlier nonconformist, episcopalian, Roman Catholic, and North American works. The third part explores the main literary kinds, including annotated bibles, devotional guides, exemplary lives, and hymns. Building on many years' research into the religious literature of the period, Rivers discusses over two hundred writers and provides detailed case studies of popular and influential works.
