THE HISTORY OF THE CORRUPTIONS. o F CHRISTIANITY. PART IV. *she History of Opinions relating to Saints and Angels. INTRODUCTION. TH E idolatry of the christian church began with the deification and proper worship of Jesus Christ, but it was far from ending with it. For, from similar causes, christians were soon led to pay an undue respect to men of eminent worth and sanctity, which at length terminated in as proper a worship of them, as that which the heathens had paid to their heroes and demigods, addressing prayer to them, in the fame manner, as to the supreme being himself. The same undue veneration led them also to a superstitious superstitious respect for their relics, the places where they had lived, their pictures and images, and indeed every thing that had borne a near relation to them; so that at length, not only were those persons whom they termed faints, the objects of their worship, but also their relics and images; and neither with respect to the external forms, nor, as far as we can perceive, their internal sentiments, were christians to be at all distinguished from those who .bowed down to wood and stone in the times of paganism. That this is a most horrid corruption of genuine Christianity I shall take for granted, there being no trace of any such practice, or of any principle that could lead to it, in the scriptures; but it may be useful to trace the causes and the progress of it, from the earliest ages of the christian church to the present time. And in order to do it as distinctly as possible, I shall divide the history of all the time preceding the reformation into two periods; the former extending to the fall of the western empire, or a little beyond the time of Austin, and the latter to the reformation itself; and...

Book excerpt: The past corruptions of the New Testament Bible lore have complex origins - this investigation considers both the intentional and unintentional causes of corruption in the Gospels. We discover herein the reasons behind the corrupted iterations of the Gospel texts. Many instances were pure accident; a mistranslation or misunderstanding of language, or errors in transcription. Other errors were incrementally increased over time - a small mistake leading to further mistakes, which in the end constitute a major corruption of the meaning of a given Biblical passage. The influence of other, later texts also led transcribers astray, resulting in mostly unintended alterations to the Gospel lore. Certain cases are almost certainly intentional; e.g. the creative alteration of the Gospels, whether it be through addition of words or ideas, or spontaneous editing of passages. There is also the omission of certain passages, be it through lax transcription or otherwise. The author stresses that some cases of intended corruption are the work of heretics maliciously seeking to undermine the teachings of Christ. Learning to recognize and diagnose cases of corruption in the Gospel texts is necessary skill for historians, theologians and scholars of Christianity. John Burgon served as Dean of Chichester Cathedral in England in the 19th century. His scholarship was recognized and much-consulted, and he published several books on Christian subjects.

Appeals were made to the emperors against the injustice of the synods. They received them, and appointed such bishops to hear and try the causes, as happened to be about the court. The emperors called several councils, they even set in them, and confirmed their decrees. This was the constant practice of the Roman emperors, both in the East and in the West; and when the empire was divided into many lesser sovereignties, those petty princes continued to act the fame part. Though the regulations established by the clergy were numerous in the time of Constantine, they contained nothing that could justly excite the jealousy of the emperors; because it was then univerfally agreed, that the emperors ought to regulate the ecclesiastical discipline. One book of the Theodosian code is wholly employed on regulations respecting the persons and goods of ecclesiastics. Anecdotes, p. 99. A kind of ecclesiastical power was also allowed to many rich laymen, as, in many cafes, they had the appointment of the bishops; at least they could not be appointed without their consent. This right of Patronage was introduced in the fourth century, to encourage the opulent to erect a number of churches; which they were the more induced to do, by having the power of appointing the ministers who were to officiate in them. And it was an old heathen opinion, that nations and provinces were happy, and free from danger, in proportion to the number of the temples they contained. As it was deemed inconsistent with the clerical character to have any secular concerns, so in this age this idea, together with that of the greater purity of the unmarried state, made it to be thought not quite proper for the clergy to have wives and families, lest their thoughts should be...

Download or read book This Tragic Gospel written by Louis A. Ruprecht, Jr. and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-07-23 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Tragic Gospel suggests that the "Gospel" of John intended to supplant the first three gospels and succeeded in gaining undue influence on the early churches. This study focuses on the tragic moment when Jesus prays for deliverance from his impending death in the garden of Gethsemane. Ruprecht contends that John rewrote this scene in order to convey a very different dramatic meaning from the one reflected in Mark's gospel. In John's version, not only did Jesus not pray to be spared, he actually mocked this prayer, embracing his imminent demise with godlike confidence. Ruprecht believes that this dramatic reinterpretation undermined the tragedy of Jesus's death as Mark imagined it and so paved the way for the development of a kind of Christianity that focused far less on compassion in the face of human suffering. John's Jesus offers the faithful food so that they will never hunger, water so that they will never thirst, and the promise of a world in which no faithful person ever sheds a tear. Mark's Christians do suffer, but they witness to suffering and death differently...with compassion. Mark's Christ suffers, like all Christians after him, but he embodies a tragic hope in the promise of a faith shored up by love and compassion.
