Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Informatics is a fast growing field which deals with all methods from computer science, environmental planning, ecology and related subjects. As well as being an interdisciplinary area, Environmental Informatics provides an interface between all involved professional groups. Monitoring the state of the environment, analysing existing data, presenting the data to scientists and the public, as well as providing decision support are only some of the topics involved. Environmental Informatics is therefore a good foundation for the computer-assisted protection of the environment.

Download or read book Responding to Global Climate Change in the Prairies written by R. Herrington and published by Adaptation and Impacts Section Environment Canada P D Northe. This book was released on 1997 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the impacts on the Prairie Provinces of climatic changes, and the possible adaptations or responses to those changes. It focuses on eight key climate-sensitive areas or sectors selected for analysis: agriculture, forestry, energy resources, insurance, recreation/tourism, water supply and demand, aquatic ecosystems, and wildlife/biodiversity. The first two chapters set out the regional context, with information on geography, population, economics, and climate. The next three chapters review regional climate sensitivities, impacts of climate change, and adaptation to climate for each of the areas or sectors. The final chapter suggests opportunities for further research. The appendix includes a summary of knowledge of proxy records of post-glacial climate in the Prairie Provinces.

Book Synopsis Thriving on Our Changing Planet by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Thriving on Our Changing Planet written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-01-20 with total page 717 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live on a dynamic Earth shaped by both natural processes and the impacts of humans on their environment. It is in our collective interest to observe and understand our planet, and to predict future behavior to the extent possible, in order to effectively manage resources, successfully respond to threats from natural and human-induced environmental change, and capitalize on the opportunities â€" social, economic, security, and more â€" that such knowledge can bring. By continuously monitoring and exploring Earth, developing a deep understanding of its evolving behavior, and characterizing the processes that shape and reshape the environment in which we live, we not only advance knowledge and basic discovery about our planet, but we further develop the foundation upon which benefits to society are built. Thriving on Our Changing Planet presents prioritized science, applications, and observations, along with related strategic and programmatic guidance, to support the U.S. civil space Earth observation program over the coming decade.

Book Synopsis Adapting to Climate Variability and Change in Ontario by : Jamie Vernon Smith
Download or read book Adapting to Climate Variability and Change in Ontario written by Jamie Vernon Smith and published by [Downsview, Ont.] : Environment Canada, Ontario Region. This book was released on 1998 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the most recent literature describing the impacts of current climate and the potential effects of anticipated climate change on the environment and on those social and economic sectors in Ontario most likely to undergo significant changes. After the introduction, chapter 2 describes the physical and socio-economic resources of Ontario. Chapter 3 details current climatic conditions in the province, including variability and recent trends. Chapter 4 reviews the impacts of the current climate on the following sectors: water resources, human and ecosystem health, the built environment, and industries such as energy, transportation, tourism and recreation, agriculture, forestry, construction, and finance. This chapter also examines the relationship between climate and regional air issues. Chapter 5 surveys future climate scenarios and assesses the impacts and opportunities arising from these scenarios for the same sectors addressed in chapter 4. Chapter 6 reviews the research and application of adaptive measures in five areas: water resources, human and ecosystem health, the built environment, industry, and regional air issues. The chapter also reviews Ontario's adaptation capacity with respect to these sectors. The final chapter summarizes knowledge gaps and research priorities for Ontario in the areas of climate variability and change, impacts and adaptation.
