Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of Alice and Phoebe Carey Among the younger American poets there are few whom we regard with more interest, or whose writings inspire us with more hopeful anticipations, than these two sisters, who were born in a quiet and pleasant district in the vicinity of Cincinnati, where they have always resided. Their educa tion has been limited by the meagre and infre: quent advantages of an obscure country school, from which they were removed altogether at a very early age; and with neither books nor lite rary friends to guide or encourage them, and in circumstances which would have chilled and with ered common natures, they have been and still are, humble but most acceptable worshippers in the glorious temple of song. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Alice and Phoebe Cary: With a Memorial of Their Lives From beginning to end my one purpose has been, not to write a eulogy, but to write justly. In depicting their birthplace and early life in Ohio, I have quoted copiously from Phoebe's sketch of Alice, and Ada Carnahan's sketch of her Aunt Phoebe, both published in the (boston) Ladies' Re pository, believing that that which pertained exclusively to their early family life could be more faithfully told by members of the family than by any one born outside of it. Save where full credit is given to others, I, alone, am responsible for the statements of this Memorial. Not a line in it has been recorded from hearsay. Not a fact is given that I do not know to be true, either from my own personal knowledge, or from the lips of the women whose lives and characters it helps to represent. I make this statement as facts embodied by me before, in a newspaper article, have been publicly questioned. One writer went so far as to say in a public jour nal, that As she would not willingly misrepresent her, Mrs. Clemmer must have misunderstood Alice Cary. I never misunderstood Alice Cary. She never uttered a word to me that I did not perfectly understand. I have never recorded a word of her that I did not know to be true; nor with any purpose but to do absolute justice to my dearest friend. This is a full and final reply to any query or doubt which this Memorial may suggest or call forth. All who read have a perfect right to criticise and to question but I shall not feel any obligation to make further reply. Life is too short and too precious to Spend it in privately answering persons who wish to be assured that the Cary sisters were not Universalists, or who cultivate original theories concerning their character or life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Sweetness of Childhood The compiler of this book has aimed to include the best available poems on the theme of childhood. She has purposely omitted, however, a few of the most hackneyed selections in order to make room for others which seem to her quite as meritorious, though not so widely known. The result of her labours must be left to the reader. Critics may easily discover sins of commis sion and of omission, but if lovers of children find half the pleasure in perusing these verses that the editor had in gathering them, she will be more than satisfied. Thanks are due to all who contributed by suggestions and encouragement toward the book's preparation, and especially to the publishers who have generously con sented to the use of copyrighted poems. The selections by Longfellow, Stedman, Phoebe Cary, Celia Thaxter, and Mrs. Margaret E. Sangster are included by arrange ment with, and by special permission of, Houghton, Mit fiin and Company, publishers of the works of Longfellow, Mr. Stedman, Miss Thaxter, Mrs. Sangster, and the Cary sisters. Book excerpt: Selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best novels of all time 'American writing, before and after Dreiser's time, differed almost as much as biology before and after Darwin,' said H. L. Mencken. Sister Carrie, Dreiser's great first novel, transformed the conventional 'fallen woman' story into a bold and truly innovative piece of fiction when it appeared in 1900. Naïve young Caroline Meeber, a small-town girl seduced by the lure of the modern city, becomes the mistress of a traveling salesman and then of a saloon manager, who elopes with her to New York. Both its subject matter and Dreiser's unsparing, nonjudgmental approach made Sister Carrie a controversial book in its time, and the work retains the power to shock readers today. 'Sister Carrie came to housebound and airless America like a great free Western wind, and to our stuffy domesticity gave us the first fresh air since Mark Twain and Whitman,' noted Sinclair Lewis. 'Dreiser enlarged, willy-nilly, by a kind of historical accident if you will, the range of American literature,' observed Robert Penn Warren. '[Sister Carrie] is a vivid and absorbing work of art.'
