Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes recent advances in carnation genome research for large-scale transcriptome analysis, the draft genome sequence, DNA markers and genome mapping, flower color, mutations, flower opening, vase life, interspecific hybridization, fragrance. The carnation is one of the most important ornamental flowers in the world, along with the chrysanthemum and the rose. The genus Dianthus is a member of the Caryophyllaceae and includes more than 300 species of annuals and evergreen perennials. Modern carnation cultivars are the product of highly complex hybridization, owing to their long history of breeding. The carnation genome was first sequenced in ornamentals by a Japanese research team in 2013. The carnation has been genetically improved over the years, and there are various types of flower colors, shapes, patterns, and sizes. In this book, the molecular mechanism of flower color development and the transposable elements responsible for this diversity are studied in detail. In addition, it presents breeding and physiological research for improving flower vase life, one of the most important traits in ornamentals, based on a model of ethylene susceptible flowers. To improve selection efficiency, genomic analysis tools including DNA markers and genetic linkage maps are also highlighted. In closing, the book discusses mutation breeding technologies such as ion-beam irradiation and genetically modified carnations.

Book excerpt: From wedding bouquets to funeral wreaths, carnations can be seen everywhere in human culture. Their colorful but delicately folded petals have made them one of the foremost decorative flowers, from the gardens of the Ottoman Empire to American Mothers Day bouquets, via Chinese medicines and French Empresses. In this book, Twigs Way explores the extraordinary history of this inimitable flower. The author traces the trials and tribulations of early breeders—compelled by florists’ fascinations for the striped and spotted—which led to delightfully colored (and delightfully named) varieties such as Lustie Gallant and Bleeding Swain. She looks at the symbolism of the red and white—and even green—carnations made famous by Oscar Wilde, and glides through many of the rooms in literature and history that we have filled with the carnation’s glorious scent. Travelling from Europe to China, Way explores how carnations have been used by herbalists the world over as a treatment for ailments to both mind and body, and she looks at the many paintings that have attempted to capture their unique complexities. Lavishly illustrated and full of unexpected delights, this book will—like the carnation itself—charm the mind and invigorate the senses.

Book excerpt: If you’re looking for a humorous historical small-town cozy who-done-it series featuring a smart and sassy amateur woman sleuth, you’ve come to the right place! Can a forward-thinking woman help the police solve a murder in a backward-thinking town? California, 1903: Smart, inquisitive, and a firm believer in the new progressive reforms, Adele Gossling seeks a new life after the devastating death of her father. She flees San Francisco for the small town of Arrojo, planning a life of peace and small pleasures with nothing more exciting than selling fountain pens to the locals in her stationery shop and partaking in the town’s favorite pastime: gossip. Peace is exactly what she doesn’t get when she discovers her neighbor’s dead body in her gazebo. The police think they have a firm suspect: the young man who was secretly engaged to the victim. But Adele and her clairvoyant new friend Nin Branch suspect he’s innocent. In spite of the raised eyebrows from Arrojo’s Victorian-minded citizens, they set out to prove the young man didn’t do it. But if he didn’t, who did? Can Adele and Nin solve this puzzling case involving a striped carnation, a diamond ring, a note, a muddy pair of boots, and a broken promise? If you love historical mysteries, comfy cozies, amateur detectives, female sleuths, small-town mysteries, humorous whodunits, and early 20th-century fiction set in America, you’ll love this series! Fans of Lee Strauss, Rosie Hunt, Sonia Parin, and R. A. Wallace will love these books too! Pick up your copy of The Carnation Murder for a fun, absorbing mystery set in Northern California at the turn of the 20th century. What early reviewers are saying: "Really well paced and researched appropriately for the era.” "The story comes alive.” "Great new series, the time period details are interesting and the mystery intriguing." ~~~ Don't forget to check out the other books in the Adele Gossling Mysteries!

On its fiftieth anniversary, this is the story of the revolution that changed Portugal’s fate. 25 April 1974, Lisbon. Over the course of a single day, Europe’s oldest fascist regime falls. On its 50th anniversary, this is the story of the revolution that changed Portugal forever. 'A thrilling and inspiring page-turner.' Richard Zimler, author of The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon On the night of 24 April 1974, at five minutes to eleven, a Lisbon radio station broadcasts Portugal’s Eurovision entry. By 6.20 p.m. the next day, Europe’s oldest fascist regime has fallen. Hardly a shot has been fired. As citizens pour into the streets, they offer carnations to the revolutionary soldiers. For the first time in forty-eight years, Portugal is free. The Carnation Revolution winds through the streets of Lisbon as the revolution unfolds, revealing the myriad acts of ordinary and extraordinary resistance that made 25 April possible. It’s the story of daring escapes from five-storey prisons, soldiers disobeying their officers’ orders and simple acts of courage by thousands of citizens. It’s the story of how a group of young captains felled a globe-spanning empire. *** 'I feel like I’ve been waiting three decades for precisely this book.' Lara Pawson, author of This Is the Place to Be 'A brilliantly detailed and evocative account of a revolution unlike any other.' Helder Macedo, Emeritus Professor of Portuguese, King's College London 'A gripping account of an episode in European history that should be better known.' Catherine Fletcher, author of The Beauty and the Terror

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mildred Dee Brown (1905–89) was the cofounder of Nebraska’s Omaha Star, the longest running black newspaper founded by an African American woman in the United States. Known for her trademark white carnation corsage, Brown was the matriarch of Omaha’s Near North Side—a historically black part of town—and an iconic city leader. Her remarkable life, a product of the Reconstruction era and Jim Crow, reflects a larger American history that includes the Great Migration, the Red Scare of the post–World War era, civil rights and black power movements, desegregation, and urban renewal. Within the context of African American and women’s history studies, Amy Helene Forss’s Black Print with a White Carnation examines the impact of the black press through the narrative of Brown’s life and work. Forss draws on more than 150 oral histories, numerous black newspapers, and government documents to illuminate African American history during the political and social upheaval of the twentieth century. During Brown’s fifty-one-year tenure, the Omaha Star became a channel of communication between black and white residents of the city, as well as an arena for positive weekly news in the black community. Brown and her newspaper led successful challenges to racial discrimination, unfair employment practices, restrictive housing covenants, and a segregated public school system, placing the woman with the white carnation at the center of America’s changing racial landscape.
