Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide-ranging history of royal automobiles in twentieth-century Iran. Iran's monarchial history spans over 2,500 years; the automobile's, not much over a century. It was not long after the advent of the earliest cars, however, that Iran's Shahan Shahs used their broad powers to begin procuring some of the world's most renowned and unique automobiles for their royal garages. In his wide-ranging new book, Iranian automotive historian Borzou Sepasi details the story of the royal garage of each Shah of Iran, beginning in 1900 with Mozaffar ad-Din Shah Qajar, who, despite importing the country's first car, forbade drivers from traveling faster than horse-drawn carriages. Intertwining the major events in Iran's recent history--including the 1979 revolution and the end of monarchial rule--with the cars of the period, Fit for a King highlights the special roles these singular luxury vehicles played throughout the twentieth century. Magnificently illustrated with more than six hundred images of regal vehicles, Sepasi's book shines a light for Western readers on this fascinating yet little-known niche in automotive history.

Book excerpt: It's 1963 and fourteen-year-old Esther Young is looking for excitement. Cursed with a lack of talent in a family filled with artistic types, Esther vows to get some attention by initiating a summer romance with a black teen accused of murdering a white man in Alabama. King-Roy Johnson shows up on Esther's doorstep that summer, an angry young man who feels betrayed by the nonviolent teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. Sent north by his mother to escape a lynch mob, he meets a follower of Malcolm X's who uses radical teachings about black revolution to fuel King-Roy's anger and frustration. But with each other's help, both Esther and King-Roy learn the true nature of integrity and find the power to stand up for what is right and true. National Book Award-winning author Han Nolan brings readers a bold new voice--by turns funny and poignant, innocent and worldly--in this powerful coming-of-age story set during the turbulent struggle for civil rights.

Book excerpt: In October 2009 Lemon Andersen's County of Kings, produced by Spike Lee and the Culture Project, premiered at the Public Theater garnering glowing reviews from such prestigious publications as the New York Times, New Yorker, Variety, Associated Press, and the Village Voice. Within just a few short weeks of its limited run, the compelling staged-memoir is now available in print. County of Kings is a jarring and poignant coming-of-age memoir told in a unique voice that seamlessly flows from compelling prose to hard-edged poetry without skipping a beat. The poetic and often times gritty narrative paints a vivid portrait of Lemon's difficult, yet at times humorous experiences growing up in New York City. Published independently by County of Kings Publishing, which also published Lemon's first book Ready Made Real, this memoir promises to be the Down These Mean Streets for the hip-hop generation. This is the kind of memoir that redefines the genre while telling a true tale of an all-American community from the 1980's to the present. - Publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chevrolet Camaro. Pontiac GTO. Dodge Charger. Ford Mustang. These names evoke memories of aggressively styled, amply powered kings of the road from the decade of the 1960s and the early 1970s, when Detroit was king, oil was cheap, and cars rumbled when you told them to. Muscle Cars: Kings of the Street from the Golden Era tells the story of these automobiles and dozens more, with insightful descriptions from the auto editors of Consumer Guide and full-color photographs on every page. More than 90 cars are profiled, including their mechanical and design highlights and their place in the muscle car pecking order. Exclusive specifications charts detail each car's vital statistics--how much it cost, how many were built, how fast it went and many more details. The focus is not on highly modified, professionally raced versions of these iconic machines; instead the focus is on prime examples of the cars you or your dads drove during this exciting decade. You learn about: - Genuine muscle cars like the many Dodge Charger versions issued during the 1960s and early 1970s--a true classic. - Car luxury makers' attempts at muscle car stardom, like the 1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass 4-4-2 W-30 and the 1969 Buick GS 400. - The icons, like the Pontiac GTO, Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet Nova, Chevrolet Chevelle, and Dodge Challenger T/A. - The 1964 Pontiac Tempest GTO--what some consider the quintessential muscle car. It's all here, in the best muscle-car read you'll find anywhere: Muscle Cars: Kings of the Street from the Golden Era. Take a trip down memory lane--a loud one.

Book excerpt: The fight for the future of the city street between pedestrians, street railways, and promoters of the automobile between 1915 and 1930. Before the advent of the automobile, users of city streets were diverse and included children at play and pedestrians at large. By 1930, most streets were primarily a motor thoroughfares where children did not belong and where pedestrians were condemned as “jaywalkers.” In Fighting Traffic, Peter Norton argues that to accommodate automobiles, the American city required not only a physical change but also a social one: before the city could be reconstructed for the sake of motorists, its streets had to be socially reconstructed as places where motorists belonged. It was not an evolution, he writes, but a bloody and sometimes violent revolution. Norton describes how street users struggled to define and redefine what streets were for. He examines developments in the crucial transitional years from the 1910s to the 1930s, uncovering a broad anti-automobile campaign that reviled motorists as “road hogs” or “speed demons” and cars as “juggernauts” or “death cars.” He considers the perspectives of all users—pedestrians, police (who had to become “traffic cops”), street railways, downtown businesses, traffic engineers (who often saw cars as the problem, not the solution), and automobile promoters. He finds that pedestrians and parents campaigned in moral terms, fighting for “justice.” Cities and downtown businesses tried to regulate traffic in the name of “efficiency.” Automotive interest groups, meanwhile, legitimized their claim to the streets by invoking “freedom”—a rhetorical stance of particular power in the United States. Fighting Traffic offers a new look at both the origins of the automotive city in America and how social groups shape technological change.

Book excerpt: This study of the rainmakers of the Nilotic Sudan means a breakthrough in anthropological thinking on African political systems. Taking his inspiration from Rene Girard's theory of consensual scapegoating the author shows that the long standing distinction of states and stateless societies as two fundamentally different political types does not hold. Centralized and segmentary systems only differ in the relative emphasis put on the victimary role of the king as compared with that of enemy victims. Kings of Disaster so proposes an uninvolved solution to the vexed problem of regicide. Recent cases occurring during the great drought of the mid-1980's are discribed and analyzed. Making simultaneous use of first-hand field data and archival sources, the book offers the first presentation of five Nilotic communities on the East Bank of the Nile. This study offers a new perspective on the role of violence in the structuring of society.
