Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Capitals of Spanish America Dear Sir, - In compliance with your request, I enclose an unsigned draft of a letter dictated by Mr. Arthur last November. It was submitted to him a few days before he died, and as he desired to make no further changes in the text, I was to have a clean copy made for his signature; but he was fatally stricken before that was done. My Dear Curtis, The graceful terms in which you propose to dedicate your book to me add still another obligation that I may not be able to repay. I appointed you Secretary of the South American Commission without your solicitation, because I knew your ability, energy, and industry would be felt a 9 they have been in the effort to bring our Spanish-American neighbors ID to closer commercial and political relations with us. I had given much consideration to the subject, and realized what is made so clear in the Reports of the South American Commission, that the future commercial prosperity of the United States required something to be done to extend our trade with the continent southward. The Commission, of which you were Secretary and subsequently became a member, was intended as an initiatory step in that direction. In my judgment, it is not only the duty of the United States to encourage and assist our merchants and manufacturers in the expansion of their foreign trade, by seeking new markets and furnishing facilities for reaching them, but there is a higher achievement in promoting the welfare of our sister republics through the consistent exercise of every friendly office tending to secure their peaceable development and national prosperity. I am sure your "The Capitals of Spanish America" will furnish our own people with trustworthy and late news about our neighbors to the southward, and that your graphic pen will make the book as interesting as it is instructive. I shall await its publication with very deep interest. If my strength permits, it will give me great pleasure to act upon your suggestion, but just now I am hardly equal to the demands of my private correspondence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish-American Republics The reader will find in the following pages a plain narrative of observa tion and travel in the more accessible parts of the five important republics of Spanish South America, Chili, Peru, the Argentine, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The writer neither encountered nor sought adventures; his object was not to explore unknown territory, but rather to examine the actual state of the town and country populations in the year 1890; to study the commercial and social life of the capitals and ports; to see how people live and labor in the rural dis tricts; to give an account of the various special industries; to describe the real aspect of the countries in question; to note the characteristic features of the inhabitants; and, in short, to make a modern report of the progress of civiliza tion south of the equator. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish America From the Earliest Period to the Present Time The close of this century witnesses a remarkable dramatic episode in the war between the United States and Spain, which has just been brought to an end. One of the oldest and once most powerful States of Europe, now worn out, and bowed with feebleness, relinquishes the empire in the west and in the east which it has held during four centuries, and retires within its original boundaries. And into its place, the inheritor of its burdens and responsibilities, steps the newest and strongest nation of the modern world, erect and confident, with the boundless future lying fair before it. It is a vivid illustration of Tennyson's profound apothegm - "The old Order changeth, giving place to new, And God fulfils Himself in many ways." It is an opportune moment in which to pass in review the history of Spain's acquisition of her colonial empire, of the manner of her administration of it, and of the way she lost it. In the following pages an attempt has been made to throw upon the screen the series of pictures which tell the tale. It is not "a tale full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." Sound and fury indeed it contains in abundance; but its significance is deep and tragic, and its moral weighty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers on Spanish America The great historian of the Spanish conquests in America remarks: It would seem to have been especially ordered by Providence that the discovery of the two great divisions of the American hemi sphere should fall to the two races best fitted to conquer and colonize them. Thus the, northern section was consigned to the An lo-saxon race whose orderly, industrious habits found an ample field for development under its colder skies, and on its more rugged soil; while the southern portion, with its rich tropical products and treasures of mineral wealth, held out the most attractive bait to invite the enterprise of the Spaniards. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Years Among Spanish-Americans This is not a book of travels. The impressions of a traveller in a foreign country, who passes from one place to another, taking hasty notes of undigested observations, are often erroneous, and generally un liable. It is necessary to live among a people, to speak their language, to know their history and litera ture, to study their customs, and to associate with them continually, in order to be able to write a book about them which those who are thoroughly familiar with the subject will not throw aside as presumptuous and superficial. I have left many warm friends in South America, friends whose uniform courtesy, attention, and kindness to me, I shall never cease to appreciate. Some of them, I am afraid, will object to certain passages in this book as an uncharitable return of hospitality. But to do good, the truth must be told. Vattel very properly pronounces it to be the duty of every nation to know itself. To acquire a sufficient knowledge of itself, however, a nation should wish occasionally to see itself as others see it. I have extenuated nothing, but I have set down naught in malice. I feel for those unfortunate countries, and the memory of the friends I have left there shall ever be dearly treasured up in my heart. But if the following pages were to have any merit, I had to describe South America as I found it and not as I wished it to be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures in Search of a Living in Spanish-America In these days of many publications the preface is often little more than an excuse for writing the book. Two of the most common objections to books of travel are that they are either the superficial accounts of people who have been only a short time in the country they describe, or else that they are written from the standpoint of some occupation that does not interest the public at large. As my travels in Spanish-America extended over a period of nearly six years, it may be fairly hoped that the knowledge of some of the places here described is not superficial, and professional work often procured adventures which, if ill-paid in money, were rich in incident. So the profession has been merely used as a thread on which to hang the tale. And if the incidents here described do not altogether correspond with those experienced by others, it does not necessarily follow that any of the writers have deviated from the truth. For a wealthy tourist will see most things from a different aspect to that of a needy foreign resident who is competing for a bare living. The photographs have been selected from those taken during my travels, in the hope that they may convey to the reader a more vivid perception of the subject matter; and if my efforts should be appreciated it is proposed to follow up these adventures by a second volume that treats of the West Indies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish America, Vol. 2: Its Romance, Reality and Future A sea-wall of solid masonry, a rampart upon whose flat top we may walk at will, presents itself to the winds and spray. That blow in from the Gulf of Darien upon the ancient city of Cartagena, and the booming of the waves there, in times of storm, might be the echo of' the guns of Drake, for this rampart was raised: along the shore in those days when he and other famous sea rovers ranged the Spanish Main, over which Cartagena still looks out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish America, Vol. 1 of 2: Or a Descriptive, Historical, and Geographical Account of the Dominions of Spain in the Western Hemisphere, Continental Insular The situation of remarkable places has been laid down with the greatest possible ao curacy, and a copious index at the conclusion affords an easy reference. The History of the Invasion and Conquests is only touched upon, so far as it is deemed generally interesting; to have given extended details on this head, would have required volumes; such abridgements have therefore been made as will render all its remarkable points sufficiently known. The work is divided into two parts; the First comprehends the Spanish dominions in North America, including the West India Islands subject to the crown of Spain. The Second Part relates to Spanish South America, and the islands on its coasts. Each part is illustrated by a map, on both of which the Author has bestowed great pains. A The following pages provide only glimpses of a notable part of the population of the United States. No matter how expert and sensitive the reporter nor how large the book, one treatment cannot possibly do justice to Spanish Americans. There are a million of them in Texas, in' California, in New Mexico, in both Arizona and Colorado, in New York, plus a scattered half million of illegal entrants. Add to these the Cubans in Tampa and visiting stu dents from every Latin American country. Such figures merely illus trate the weakness of arithmetic to bring a sense of reality to the description of a people.
