Book excerpt: A collection of memories, experiences, historical facts, stories, mysteries and legends are the listed attributes of this book. Included is a collection of photographs that provides a window into a place in time where the pulse of the town beat with the number of trains arriving and departing. This book contains an amended manuscript with additional facts and information not contained in the previously published book by this author titled More than a Train Yard and a Whistle Stop: The Canadian Pacific's Brownville Division, 1886 to 1963.It provides descriptions of the buildings, utilities, infrastructure, equipment and rolling stock that were the physical attributes of the Canadian Pacific Railroad and the village of Brownville Junction. Also included are additional descriptions of the human side of the railroad consisting of highly skilled and experienced managers, tradesmen, laborers, and contractors that were employed to keep the CPR running on schedule and without incident. Without incident while operating some of the most complex mechanical, logistical and communication systems ever constructed was the ultimate goal, albeit not always attainable. This book identifies locates and describes in detail the technical attributes that existed primarily for the existence of the CPR, including its operations and maintenance facilities within Brownville Junction. The contents and facts listed in this document are largely based on engineering documents that have an origin of 1927 along with period photographs of CPR employees, structures, buildings and equipment that are the property of the Brownville - Brownville Junction Historical Society and Parish House Museum and date back to 1886. Some facts are based on the memory of the author who lived in Brownville Junction and his family who were all employed by the CPR for most if not all of their working lives.Short stories containing details of how events may have occurred are added to bring life to the document. These stories of events follow the rules of usual practices and procedures commonly used in business, maintenance shops, and construction projects. The interaction of governments, their agencies and the methods used in implementing official doctrine and protocol are also followed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nevada Northern Railway is the sole survivor from a grand era when railroads served mines throughout the state. Built in 1905-1906 to develop the incredible copper deposits of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company in White Pine County, it was--and still is--a workaday railroad. Although its primary purpose was to haul ore, it eventually served the community with a daily passenger train between East Ely and Cobre until 1941. Over 4.5 million people rode the trains, and a mountain of copper ore was moved. In 1983, the Nevada Northern Railway ceased operating, and two years later the entire ore line, including the railroad's yard and shop facilities in East Ely, was donated to the White Pine Historical Railroad Foundation that now operates the railway as a museum. Instead of relics in glass cases or repainted old equipment on static display, the museum preserves a working steam railroad, delighting train enthusiasts year-round with passenger service and special seasonal excursions.

Book excerpt: Mergers have affected railroads in ways few other industries have experienced, and in the last 50 years they have steered the business direction of American railroads. Leaders Count brings readers the dramatic story of how the Aurora Branch Railroad, which spanned from Aurora, Illinois, to Chicago, grew and developed into the modern-day BNSF Railway. The story begins with the many ways railroads shaped and settled the country and tells how the founders’ commitment to their dreams ensured the railroad’s success. The profiles of tenacious leaders like James J. Hill, known as The Empire Builder, and Matthew Rose, current CEO of BNSF, will inspire readers. This is a case history of the business strategies that have taken this company from its humble beginnings to the industry giant that it is today. More than 75 photos from the company’s extensive archives accompany the story of BNSF’s evolution. As one of the largest and most successful of U.S. railroads, BNSF Railway is a vibrant example of today’s freight railroad industry. While the book provides a brief history of railroads in general, including the five principal companies making up the present day BNSF, its focus is on the critical decisions and strategies implemented by its leaders, choices that ensured the railroad’s survival.
