Book excerpt: A cancer survivor's guide to dealing with the treatments, emotions and new normal that comes after a shocking diagnosis. Bowel cancer, despite being the UK’s second biggest cancer killer, still receives a shockingly low level of awareness. This book aims to redress this by telling the story of a mother of two who embarked on a crash course dealing with advanced bowel cancer at the age of 45. Having absolutely no preparation, her lists help her gain control over what fast becomes an even more chaotic and unpredictable life. Her diagnosis presents a wake-up call to what’s important in life, and insists that daft and often funny things can still happen to people living with cancer. This is a memoir packed full of useful advice for making the best of your sudden situation – from learning how to deal with your new menagerie of medics to how to avoid all the usual cancer faux pas! As someone who describes herself as habitually “not doing today what I can put off till tomorrow”, Rachel shares with you all the lists you need to cope with gaining back some control from the chaos. This is the ultimate reader-friendly guide on how to deal with operation after operation, the reality of chemotherapy and, when that’s over, how to function on a daily basis with your ‘new normal’. But most importantly, it’s a record of how Rachel taught her children resilience, her number one challenge in life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1981. This book has been written for those who want to comprehend how a large natural language-understanding program works. Thirty-five professionals in Cognitive Science, mostly psychologists by training, in a summer school were taught to grapple with the details of programming in Artificial Intelligence. As a part of the curriculum designed for this project the authors created what they called micro-programs. These micro-programs were an attempt to give students the flavor of using a large AI program without all the difficulty normally associated with learning a complex system written by another person. Using the authors’ parser, ELI, or story understanding program, SAM, they also gave students the micro versions of these programs, which were very simple versions that operated in roughly the same way as their larger versions, but without all the frills. Students were asked to add pieces to the programs and otherwise modify them in order to learn how they worked.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief edition contains two major parts. The first is the historical analysis of associationism and its countertraditions, which still provides the framework used to relate current research to an important intellectual tradition. The second part of the book reproduces the major components of the HAM theory. In our view, the major contribution of that theory was the propositional network analyses of memory and the placement of those representational assumptions into an information-processing framework. This book is smaller than the previous book on HAM thanks to a re-evaluation of certain sections which have been deleted--some due to out of date information, some because the analyses presented have been replaced by better ones. This book makes the more important points of the original HAM book available at a more economical price. - from the preface.

This book proposes and tests a theory about human memory, about how a person encodes, retains, and retrieves information from memory. The book is especially concerned with memory for sentential materials. We propose a theoretical framework which is adequate for describing comprehension of linguistic materials, for exhibiting the internal representation of propositional materials, for characterizing the interpretative processes which encode this information into memory and make use of it for remembering, for answering questions, recognizing instances of known categories, drawing inferences, and making deductions.

Book excerpt: The Database and Expert Systems Application -DEXA - conferences are mainly oriented to establish a state-of-the art forum on Database and Expert System applications. But Practice without Theory has no sense, as Leonardo said five centuries ago. In this Conference we try a comprornise between these two complementary aspects. A total of 5 sessions are application-oriented, ranging from classical applications to more unusual ones in Software Engineering. Recent research aspects in Databases, such as activity, deductivity and/or Object Orientation are also present in DEXA 92, as weIl as the implication of the new "data models" such as OO-Model, Deductive Model, etc .. included in the Modelling sessions. Other areas of interest, such as Hyper-Text and Multimedia application, together with the classical field of Information Retrieval are also considered. FinaIly, Implementation Apects are reflected in very concrete fields. A total of of nearly 200 papers submitted from all over the world were sent to DEXA 92. Only 90 could be accepted. A Poster session has also been establishcd. DEXA 90 was held in Vienna, Austria; DEXA 91 in Berlin, Germany; and DEXA 92 will take place in Valencia, Spain, where we are celebrating the discovery of thc New World just five centurics ago, in Leonardo's age. Both the quality of the Conference and the compromise between Practice and Thcory are duc to the credit of all the DEXA 92 authors.

Book excerpt: This text demystifies the subject of operating systems by using a simple step-by-step approach, from fundamentals to modern concepts of traditional uniprocessor operating systems, in addition to advanced operating systems on various multiple-processor platforms and also real-time operating systems (RTOSs). While giving insight into the generic operating systems of today, its primary objective is to integrate concepts, techniques, and case studies into cohesive chapters that provide a reasonable balance between theoretical design issues and practical implementation details. It addresses most of the issues that need to be resolved in the design and development of continuously evolving, rich, diversified modern operating systems and describes successful implementation approaches in the form of abstract models and algorithms. This book is primarily intended for use in undergraduate courses in any discipline and also for a substantial portion of postgraduate courses that include the subject of operating systems. It can also be used for self-study. Key Features • Exhaustive discussions on traditional uniprocessor-based generic operating systems with figures, tables, and also real-life implementations of Windows, UNIX, Linux, and to some extent Sun Solaris. • Separate chapter on security and protection: a grand challenge in the domain of today’s operating systems, describing many different issues, including implementation in modern operating systems like UNIX, Linux, and Windows. • Separate chapter on advanced operating systems detailing major design issues and salient features of multiple-processor-based operating systems, including distributed operating systems. Cluster architecture; a low-cost base substitute for true distributed systems is explained including its classification, merits, and drawbacks. • Separate chapter on real-time operating systems containing fundamental topics, useful concepts, and major issues, as well as a few different types of real-life implementations. • Online Support Material is provided to negotiate acute page constraint which is exclusively a part and parcel of the text delivered in this book containing the chapter-wise/topic-wise detail explanation with representative figures of many important areas for the completeness of the narratives.
