Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on new archival evidence and interviews, and setting out a new theoretical framework for music video analysis, Emily Caston presents a major new analysis of music videos from 1966-2016, identifying not only their distinctive British traits, but their parallels with British film genres and styles. By analysing the genre, craft and authorial voice of music video within the context of film and popular music, the book sheds new light on existing theoretical and historical questions about audiences, authorship, art and the creative industries. Far from being an American cultural form, the book reveals music video's roots in British and European film traditions, and suggests significant ways in which British video has impacted popular film and music culture.

Book excerpt: Jefferson Hunter examines English films and television dramas as theyrelate to English culture in the 20th century. He traces themes such as theinfluence of U.S. crime drama on English film, and film adaptations of literaryworks as they appear in screen work from the 1930s to the present. A Canterbury Taleand the documentary Listen to Britain are analyzed in the context of villagepageants and other wartime explorations of Englishness at risk. English crime dramasare set against the writings of George Orwell, while a famous line from Noel Cowardleads to a discussion of music and image in works like Brief Encounter and Look Backin Anger. Screen adaptation is also broached in analyses of the 1985 BBC version ofDickens's Bleak House and Merchant-Ivory's The Remains of the Day.

Book excerpt: The growing presence of popular music in film is one of the most exciting areas of contemporary research in film studies. The changing roles and functions that such music performs, the variety of ways in which it provides narrative, aesthetic and commercial opportunities, and the consequences of its increasing displacement of the traditional film score are among the most significant developments in recent cinema practice. Written by an international group of academics and researchers, the new essays in this volume seek to explore these issues and to locate them within their appropriate creative and organizational contexts. Individually, the chapter-by-chapter focus on specific topics allows for close examination of particular debates; collectively, the book's overall analysis points to important changes in the production and consumption of both film and music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a unique examination of the development of popular music function in film. It assesses the contribution of popular music to the interpretation of the most significant films, covering the period from rock ‘n’ roll’s initial introduction at the opening of Blackboard Jungle, to the backlash against disco, which followed soon after the release of Saturday Night Fever. By dividing this period into five phases—The Classical American Musical Phase, The British Invasion Phase, The New Hollywood Alienation Phase, The Disco Phase and The Post-Disco Conservative Phase—the book pinpoints key moments at which individual developments occurred and lays out a path of expansion in popular music function. Each chapter offers close analyses of this period’s most innovative films; examines the cultural, historical, technical and industrial factors peculiar to each phase and considers the influence of these upon the specific timing of functional advances.

Book excerpt: Who are pop dandies? Why are stars like David Bowie, Jarvis Cocker, Pete Doherty and Robbie Williams so dandified? Taking up a wide range of British pop stars, Hawkins seeks to find out why so many have cast themselves in roles that often take style to absurd extremes. In this study, male pop artists are mapped against a cultural and historical background through a genealogy of personalities, such as Oscar Wilde, W.H. Auden, Andy Warhol, No?Coward, Derek Jarmen, David Beckham and countless others. A critical analysis of issues and approaches to musical performance through masculinity becomes the focal point of this fascinating study. Ranging from the sixties to beyond the twentieth century, The British Pop Dandy considers the construction of the male pop icon through the spectacle of videos, live concerts and films. Why do we derive pleasure from the performing body, and how is entertainment linked to categories of gender and sexuality? The author insists that pop performances can be understood through human characteristics that relate to the particulars of dandyism, camp and glamour, and this he theorizes through the work of Charles Baudelaire. One of the political objectives of the dandy is to liberate himself through a denial of the structures that assume fixed identity. Not least, it is acts of queering in pop music that characterize entire generations of male artists in the UK. Setting out to discover what distinguishes the British pop dandy, Hawkins considers the role of music and performance in the articulation of hyperbolic display. It is argued that the recorded voice is a construction that idealizes self-representation, and absorbs the listener's attention. Particularly, camp address in singing practice is taken up in conjunction with a discussion of intimacy, which forms part of the strategy of the performer. In a range of songs and videos selected for music analysis, Hawkins points to the uniqueness of the voice as it expresses a transgressive quali
