Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serofu and Her Clan “Life of the African Elephant” by: Lambert van Buuren In this story, Lambert’s goal was to capture the lives of African Elephants from the elephant’s point of view as these animals were being poached and culled out of existence. The African elephant is not a domesticated animal as are their Indian cousins. African elephants were poached until 1989 when poaching was banned, by then their numbers had dropped dramatically. The story is based on facts found in National Geographic magazines and Animal Planet channel specials as far back as 1990. As a story teller, Lambert gave the animals voices and added two African folklore as told by Humphrey Harman entitled “Thunder, Elephant and Dorobo”, and “Podhu and Aruwa” to better give the elephants their voices and you, the reader/ listener the elephants prospective on life. Chapter one opens with Serofu, the matriarchal elephant and her clan observing “The Rituals and Customs of Elephants”. Upon reading the opening of this story, one finds the main character, Serofu, had lead her clan to a large pool of water where lions had decided to rest when she heard Mobutu cry out in pain through infrasound.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book comes along like this once in a lifetime. You read it as a small child, or even an adult, and never forget the images it conjures up of a wonderful Englishman who lives in the mysterious forests of faraway Burma and of the kind native people who teach him about their lovely country. But most of all, you never forget the elephants! For this is a story about those magnificent creatures. Though he was officially known as Lt. Colonel J. H. Williams, the author was known to the world at large as Elephant Bill. That is because he spent 25 years living with the elephants in the mountains and forests of Burma. There he trained them to haul teak logs out of the isolated jungles. Yet this is also a story of great courage, because when the Second World War struck it also came to Burma. The Japanese Imperial Army planned to confiscate the Burmese elephants, drafting them to make the bridges and railways they needed to invade India. When he learned of these plans to put his beloved animals to a war-like purpose, Elephant Bill knew what had to be done. The mighty kings of the jungle had to be evacuated to safety. This is thus the story not only of the peaceful days in the jungle, starting in 1921, but also the story of the largest elephant rescue in history. It tells the amazing account of how Elephant Bill, along with his friends and family, rode 45 of the great beasts across the mountains of Burma, before reaching safety in faraway India. A classic then. A classic now. Elephant Bill is a blessing to any library and a literary treasure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Physiologically, elephants are unique - entirely different from all other mammals. Yet, since antiquity, observers have agreed that the elephant is the animal most akin to man." "Today both species of elephant - Africans and Asians - stand on the brink of extinction. Hope is arising, however, from a new generation of young American scientists, many of them women. Female zoologists and biologists have led the field in new findings about elephant ecology, family and sexual patterns, and the animals' continual communication by ultrasound, inaudible to human ears." "The Astonishing Elephant also reveals, for the first time, a hair-raising story of elephant "genocide": in the years between the Civil War and World War I, all male elephants in U. S. circuses were stealthily killed - shot, poisoned, drowned, and even hanged. The reason was musth, a periodic condition of mature males that renders them uncontrollable. So, gradually, only female elephants - now with masculine names - were put on parade, with none the wiser." "Most important, The Astonishing Elephant details a decade of heartbreaking trial and error and eventual triumph as scientists have tried to learn how to breed elephants via artificial insemination."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
