Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brahma-sutra, attributed to Badaraya (ca. 400 CE), is the canonical book of Vedanta, the philosophical tradition which became the doctrinal backbone of modern Hinduism. As an explanation of the Upanishads, it is principally concerned with the ideas of Brahman, the great ground of Being, and of the highest good. The Philosophy of the Brahma-sutra is the first introduction to concentrate on the text and its ideas, rather than its reception and interpretation in the different schools of Vedanta. Covering the epistemology, ontology, theory of causality and psychology of the Brahma-sutra, and its characteristic theodicy, it also: · Provides a comprehensive account of its doctrine of meditation · Elaborates on its nature and attainment, while carefully considering the wider religious context of Ancient India in which the work is situated · Draws the contours of Brahma-sutra's intellectual biography and reception history. By contextualizing the Brahma-sutra's teachings against the background of its main collocutors, it elucidates how the work gave rise to widely divergent ontologies and notions of practice. For both the undergraduate student and the specialist this is an illuminating and necessary introduction to one of Indian philosophy's most important works.

Book excerpt: In the Brahma Sutras of Badarayana, we find what is perhaps the most influential work in the history of Hindu Theology, given that the Brahma Sutras served as the basis for the theologies of all major Hindu theologians, including Sankara, Ramanuja, Nimbarka,Vallabha, and Madhva. In this work Dr. Adams examines the first of the Brahma Sutras four sections in an attempt to identify their original meaning and the theology that Badarayana attempted to express.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Swaminarayan Hindu Theology by : Swami Paramtattvadas
Download or read book An Introduction to Swaminarayan Hindu Theology written by Swami Paramtattvadas and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-17 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its inception over two hundred years ago, Swaminarayan Hinduism has flourished into a transnational movement described as one of the fastest growing Hindu groups in the world. Despite being one of the largest and most visible Hindu traditions both in India and the West, surprisingly little is known about what the Swaminarayan fellowship believes. An Introduction to Swaminarayan Hindu Theology provides a comprehensive doctrinal account of the Swaminarayan tradition's belief system, drawing on its rich corpus of theological literature, including the teachings of Swaminarayan himself and classical commentaries on canonical Vedāntic texts. Part I delineates the sources and tools of Swaminarayan Hindu theology, while Part II systematically expounds upon its distinctive five eternal entities - Parabrahman, Akṣarabrahman, māyā, īśvara and jīva - and mukti (spiritual liberation). In presenting these key themes theologically and lucidly, Swami Paramtattvadas makes the Swaminarayan Hindu belief system intelligible to scholars, students and serious readers.

Sharma and published by . This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 1834 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: Brahmasutras and Their Principle Commentaries is a vigorous, animated and thought-provoking treatise on the interpretation of the Vedantasutras of Badarayana. Dr. Sharma has delved deeply into the three principal traditions of their interpretation established by acharya Sankara, Ramanuja and Madhva. This is the first work on the Sutras to give parity of treatment to all the three principal traditions of interpretation by placing them in their own milieu and bringing them into close thematic relation with one another, allowing full scope for each one to speak in its authentic voice. The exegetical, the expository and the analytic aspects of the interpretations have been given the fullest attention in a coordinated form, for the first time. Besides the Basyas of the acharyas, we are here treated to a sumptuous feast of the niceties and nuances of their exposition and reinforcement by their distinguished subcommentators like Vacaspati Misra, Amalananda, Sudersana Suri, Jayatirtha, Vyasatirth, Vadiraja, Raghuttama, Raghunatha, Raghavendra Svamin and others whose works are not available to us in English translations. The disquisitions from these unexplored classics of the Vedanta system are sure to regale the 'Tarkarasikas' among students of philosophy in the East, in the West and in the Far East. It is only such a thoroughgoing study of the Sutras and their classical commentaries that can help us in our voyage of discovery to where the Sutras of Badarayana intend to lead us.

Dennis Waite draws on traditional Advaita teachings to answer all seeker-related questions. He first invited questions to his website in 2005 and this book collects questions and answers in a comprehensive volume for experienced and new spiritual seekers. One answer often leads to a new worry, and his website adavaita-vision.org continues to accept questions. No question is too difficult for Advaita Vedanta and all answers are reasonable.
Book Synopsis Philosophy of Śrī Madhvācārya by : B. N. Krishnamurti Sharma
Download or read book Philosophy of Śrī Madhvācārya written by B. N. Krishnamurti Sharma and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1986 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is a good presentation of the philosophy of Sri Madhvacarya, complete in its architectonic unity. The author probes its ontological and epistemological foundations, and critcally examines the structure erected on them. The discussion focuses on crucial doctrines of theism, and brings to light for the first time the striking parallelisms of thought between Madhva and his Western contemporary St. Thomas Aquinas. Light is also thrown on how Madhva and his commentators anticipated the views of modern philosophers like Spencer, Russell and Hobhouse on the nature of time, space and memory. The latest researches on Madhvacarya's role in the Vedantic Bhakti movement and his attempt to harmonize the Upanisadic texts on monism and dualism are substantially drawn upon.
Book Synopsis The Philosophy of the Upaniṣads by : S. M. Srinivasa Chari
Download or read book The Philosophy of the Upaniṣads written by S. M. Srinivasa Chari and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: The Upanisads which contain lofty philosophical teachings of the great seers constitute the most authoritative sourcebook for the Vedanta system of philosophy. However, there is no unanimity among the ancient exponents of Vedanta regarding the nature of the philosophy adumbrated in the Upanisads. Dr. Chari's scholarly work attempts to make a dispassionate study of the philosophical passages of the fourteen Principal Upanisads by giving due consideration to not only the comments of Samkara, Ramanuja and Madhva, but more importantly, the authoritative views of Badarayana as enshrined in his classic Vedantasutras. In the first part of the book, he presents the important passages of the Upanisads along with English rendering indicating the variations in the interpretation by the three commentators and also discusses their philosophical implications with reference to the Vedanta doctrines developed in the post Upanisadic period. In the second part he has attempted to consolidate the variety of philosophical thoughts scattered all over the Upanisads into coherent doctrines under five broad subjects: Brahman, jivatman, jagat, sadhana, and parama-purusartha. In the final chapter he conclusively establishes on the basis of an objective evaluation of the views of the commentators that the Upanisads do not support the main tenets of Advaita such as the concept of Nirvisesa Brahman, the identity of jivatman and Brahman, the phenomenal character of the jagat and the doctrine of maya. The author maintains with sufficient textual support that the nature of the philosophy advocated by the Upanisads is Theistic Monism (savisesadvaita). This book, which is the first of its kind, presents an authentic and comprehensive exposition of the philosophy of the Upanisads.
Book Synopsis The Role of Divine Grace in the Soteriology of Śaṃkarācārya by : Malkovsky
Download or read book The Role of Divine Grace in the Soteriology of Śaṃkarācārya written by Malkovsky and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the role of divine grace in the non-dualist soteriology of Śaṃkara. The author argues that grace is an essential but generally overlooked feature in Śaṃkara’s enlightenment spirituality. Introductory chapters summarize recent developments in Śaṃkara research, Śaṃkara’s epistemology and ontology, ancient Vedāntic teachings on grace, and modern scholarly disagreement about grace in Śaṃkara’s Advaita system. The heart of the book consists of two lengthy exegetical chapters examining Śaṃkara’s key passages on grace from his dozen genuine works. The final chapter presents for the first time a systematic summary of Śaṃkara’s understanding of the operation and necessity of divine grace. This book provides a useful summary of Śaṃkara’s system as a whole besides offering a radical revision of the standard understanding of Śaṃkara’s soteriology. It also reveals that Śaṃkara was much more indebted in his thinking to his Vedantic predecessors than had hitherto been thought.
Book Synopsis The Essence of Vedanta by : Brian Hodgkinson
Download or read book The Essence of Vedanta written by Brian Hodgkinson and published by Arcturus Publishing. This book was released on 2006-06-05 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All students of philosophy will relate to the concepts of selfhood, nature, karma and liberation. Here are views and answers to the most important questions. How is self identified? What are the causes and effects in nature? Are our actions determined? What is freedom for a human being? What happens after death? The Essence of Vedanta examines issues of existential philosophy from the viewpoint of the Veda, the most ancient and sacred of Indian scriptures, and also outlines the work of Sankara, the early medieval master of Vedanta's dominant form, Advaita. The foundation of all Vedic teaching lies in the universal truth that human nature reflects God (Brahman), who exists in every living thing. An individual needs no salvation therefore, because he or she is never lost, but merely living in ignorance of his or her true nature. Brian Hodgkinson offers readers insight into, and discussion of, the fundamental questions of the Vedic system concerning self-realization, such as knowledge versus ignorance, the self, consciousness, free will, nature, time, the mind, language, law and society. His fascinating appraisal reveals the profound nature of the Veda and its practices. With its tolerance of other faiths, and ultimately uplifting spiritual message, it is a discipline that chimes with our 21st century needs and preoccupations.

Book Synopsis Brahma Sūtras by : Śrīla Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa
Download or read book Brahma Sūtras written by Śrīla Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-04 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vedānta-sūtra, which consists of aphorisms revealing the method of understanding Vedic knowledge, is the concise form of all Vedic knowledge. The aphorisms or sūtras of Vedānta-sūtra were compiled by Śrīla Vyāsadeva, a powerful incarnation of Śrī Nārāyaṇa. All the authorized and established sampradāyas have their own commentary on Vedānta-sūtra. However, no one in Gauḍīya Sampradāya has written a commentary on Vedānta-sūtra, until sometimes back, in Jaipur, the Gauḍīyas were challenged that "The Gauḍīya Sampradāya has no commentary on the Vedānta-sūtra." So Baladeva Vidyābhūṣana, with the order of Govindaji at Jaipur, he wrote the commentary on Brahma-sūtra, which is called Govinda-bhāṣya. From then, it became the commentary on Brahma-sūtra for the Gauḍīya Sampradāya. The philosophy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, which amalgamated the views of all the previous Acaryas in His thesis of Acintya-bhedabheda Tattva, is explicitly explained by Sri Baladeva Vidyabhusana in his Govinda Bhasya of the Vedanta-sutra. The Vedānta-sūtra, which is well known among scholars by the following additional names: (1) Brahma-sūtra, (2) Śārīraka, (3) Vyāsa-sūtra, (4) Bādarāyaṇa-sūtra, (5) Uttara-mīmāṁsā and (6) Vedānta-darśana. - Compiled from lectures, purports, and conversations of Śrīla Prabhupāda, Founder-Ācārya of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON)
