Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much research has been done aiming the forecasting of stock market index values. However, very few researches focus on the predictability of the direction of stock market movements. This paper fills this gap through the estimation of a model, using fuzzy logic to forecast the direction of the movements of the São Paulo Stock Exchange index (IBOVESPA). To establish the rules of the model it was used an estimation period based on 1,000 daily data sets, corresponding to the period of January 8, 1997 to January 22, 2001. The test period was from January 23, 2001 to February 2, 2005. A software called FuzzyTECH® was used. Despite the estimated model produces an inexact answer, with a probabilistic output, it was possible to implement an investment strategy, using the IBOVESPA index as a proxy for an investment fund, which outperformed a buy-and-hold strategy.

Book excerpt: In recent years, Brazil has achieved substantial progress in capital market development by building a diversified investor base and expanding the menu of available financial instruments. In this context, we evaluated the invested Brazilian market portfolio for a period spanning 2005–15. This is a portfolio of all assets proportionally weighted by their market capitalization, and it is divided in eight broad categories: government bonds, equities, bank funding bonds, corporate bonds, real-estate, agribusiness, private-equity, and credit bonds. While the paper focuses on stylized facts related to market size, composition weighting and changes over time, the estimated market portfolio contains important information for policy makers and market participants alike.

Book excerpt: “A hands-on introduction to what happens on the Street—if you are entering or thinking of joining the financial industry . . . this book is a must.” —Nikunj Kapadia, Professor, Isenberg School of Management, University of Massachusetts Amherst Written by an experienced trader in a clear, conversational style and assuming no previous background in finance, The Practical Guide to Wall Street provides a thorough schooling in the core curriculum of the equity and equity derivatives sales and trading business—exactly what you’d learn sitting beside the traders at a tier-one Wall Street investment bank (except that in practice, traders rarely have time to provide such detailed explanations!). Topics include: Clear, detailed, intuitive explanations of all major products, their function, pricing and risks (several unavailable elsewhere despite producing billions in annual revenue for Wall Street) The layout of the trading floor, the roles and responsibilities of the different sales and trading groups, and how they interact to service the client business An overview of the structure of the macro-economy and the trader’s perspective on the significance of economic data releases and their impact on the financial markets A review of those concepts from fundamental valuation and financial statement analysis of greatest relevance on the trading floor (as opposed to abstract valuation models) Practical details of the structure and functioning of the equity and derivative markets including translations of trader jargon, Bloomberg tips, market conventions, liquidity and risk considerations, and much more This book provides the first comprehensive explanation of all aspects of the functioning of the equities division, with information, details, and insights previously available only to those who already worked on a trading floor. In a format accessible to non-professionals, it fundamentally changes the level of knowledge employers in the industry can expect of new hires.

Book excerpt: Of the books published regarding hyperinflation, this may be the only one that provides effective strategies for operating a business under conditions of a rapidly depreciating currency. "The Hyperinflation Survival Guide: Strategies for American Businesses" was written by Dr. Gerald Swanson (an associate professor of economics at the University of Arizona). Harry E. Figgie, Jr. sponsored the research and production of this book. As it was originally printed in 1989, it was way ahead of its time. However, this doesn't change the fact that this book will prove to be an excellent resource for businessmen and individuals once the Federal Reserve's destruction of the U.S. dollar enters its terminal stage.
