Book excerpt: At the turn of the twentieth century, the publishing industries in Britain and the United States underwent dramatic expansions and reorganization that brought about an increased traffic in books and periodicals around the world. Focusing on adventure fiction published from 1899 to 1919, Patrick Scott Belk looks at authors such as Joseph Conrad, H.G. Wells, Conan Doyle, and John Buchan to explore how writers of popular fiction engaged with foreign markets and readers through periodical publishing. Belk argues that popular fiction, particularly the adventure genre, developed in ways that directly correlate with authors’ experiences, and shows that popular genres of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries emerged as one way of marketing their literary works to expanding audiences of readers worldwide. Despite an over-determined print space altered by the rise of new kinds of consumers and transformations of accepted habits of reading, publishing, and writing, the changes in British and American publishing at the turn of the twentieth century inspired an exciting new period of literary invention and experimentation in the adventure genre, and the greater part of that invention and experimentation was happening in the magazines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Sunday Times Best Book of the Year: The “informative and entertaining” first major biography of the trailblazing, controversial children’s author (The Washington Post). Born in 1858, Edith Nesbit is today considered the first modern writer for children and the inventor of the children’s adventure story. In The Life and Loves of E. Nesbit, award-winning biographer Eleanor Fitzsimons uncovers the little-known details of her life, introducing readers to the Fabian Society cofounder and fabulous socialite who hosted legendary parties and had admirers by the dozen, including George Bernard Shaw. Through Nesbit’s letters and archival research, Fitzsimons reveals “E.” to have been a prolific lecturer and writer on socialism and shows how Nesbit incorporated these ideas into her writing, thereby influencing a generation of children—an aspect of her literary legacy never before examined. Fitzsimons’s riveting biography brings new light to the life and works of this remarkable writer and woman. “Meticulous and invaluable...exceptionally illuminating and detailed.” —The Wall Street Journal “Fitzsimons handily reassembles the hundreds of intricate, idiosyncratic parts of the miraculous E. Nesbit machine.” —The New York Times Book Review “I’ve always loved the work of E. Nesbit—The Railway Children and Five Children and It are my favorites—but I knew nothing about the extraordinary, surprising life of this great figure in children’s literature . . . so gripping that I read [it] in two days.” —Gretchen Rubin, #1 New York Times-bestsellingauthor of The Happiness Project “A charming, lively, and old-fashioned biography . . . highly readable.” —Publishers Weekly “A terrific book.” —Neil Gaiman

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This critical edition publishes—for the first time anywhere—the original manuscript and revised versions of Pudd’nhead Wilson. Mark Twain's story of the antebellum South, first published in 1894, continues to prompt conversations about race and the dire legacy of American slavery. At its heart is Roxy, a mixed-race woman enslaved to a wealthy Missouri family. To save her infant son (whose father was white) from being "sold down the river," Roxy switches him in the cradle with her master's son, setting in motion a train of ironic and bitter events. With its mixture of farce, social commentary, tragedy, and satire, Pudd'nhead Wilson has come to be one of Mark Twain's most-read and most-studied works. But few have read the original Pudd'nhead Wilson. The text familiar since 1894, as editor Benjamin Griffin shows, was heavily edited and censored—first by the author himself under pressure from family and friends, then by his publishers. Now the Mark Twain Project makes available the full text of the Morgan Library manuscript (the original version), together with a critical text of the revised version, stripped of the changes imposed by Mark Twain's editors and publishers—two fascinating ways to encounter this troubled and troubling novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An exciting new collection, The L.M. Montgomery Reader assembles significant rediscovered primary materials on one of Canada's most enduringly popular authors throughout her high-profile career as the author of the resoundingly successful Anne of Green Gables (1908) and after her death. Each of its three volumes gathers pieces published all over the world to set the stage for a much-needed reassessment of Montgomery's literary reputation. Much of the material is freshly unearthed from archives and digital collections and has never before been collected in book form. The ninety selections appearing in this first volume focus on Montgomery's role as a public celebrity, giving a strong impression of her as a writer and cultural critic as she discusses a range of topics with wit, wisdom, and humour, including the natural landscape of Prince Edward Island, her wide readership, anxieties about modernity, and the continued relevance of "old ideals." These essays and interviews are joined by a number of additional pieces that discuss her work's literary and cultural value in relation to an emerging canon of Canadian literature, with nearly one hundred selections in all. Each volume is accompanied by an extensive introduction and detailed commentary by leading Montgomery scholar Benjamin Lefebvre that trace the interplay between the author and the critic, as well as between the private and public Montgomery. This volume, and the Reader as a whole, adds tremendously to our understanding and appreciation of Montgomery?s legacy as a Canadian author and as a literary celebrity both during and beyond her lifetime." --Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Miss Janis has produced a bright, sparkling little book, which does honor to her head and heart. It is intense, it is natural, sometimes ridic ulous, sometimes delicious, and withal at times very sensible, practical and womanly. The nine men who pour their love at her feet are: The College Boy, The Lawyer, The Composer, The Actor, The Platonic Friend, The Millionaire, The Literary Man, The Farmer (back home whom she loved years ago), and The Stranger. But the last alas! is but a dream, the man she would like to find. She shows much skill in handling delicate situations. The book will make one laugh. It will arouse tender memories. On the whole its influence is for good. -Education [1914] Love Letters of An Actress, by Elsie Janis, is a little book that will be read because of the interest in the author rather than for its literary merit. The volume is daintily made with cunning head and tail pieces, decorative bastard title pages and other ornamentation. As for the text-well, Miss Janis explains in the preface that she writes from imagination rather than from experience, as the only man who threatened to die of love for her promptly married some one else and was divorced within two months on the ground of cruelty. The letters are from a college boy, a millionaire, an author, a composer, a platonic friend, a man from home, and a stranger, and they all love the heroine in a different way and each when rejected is easily consoled. -The Bookseller, Newsdealer and Stationer, Volume 38 [1913]
