But are here the central and all-absorbing interest. We observe further that the appeal is now addressed to individual Israelites rather than to the nation as a whole, as if the great hindrance to the emancipation of Israel was no longer political, but lay in the selfishness and timidity of the mass of the people (1: Only a few writers2 have thought that these differences amount to a proof of dual authorship. How far they are to be explained by a change of situation is a question which must be deferred till we have examined the possibilities that lie in the historical background of the prophecies (p. Xxxix f The discourses of which this section is composed are even less closely articulated than those of xl. - xlviii. They are mostly Of three kinds, which alternate with each other, without any discoverable principle of arrangement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Prophet Isaiah The present General Editor for theoold Testament in the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges desires to say that, in accordance with the policy of his predecessor the Bishop of Worcester, he does not hold himself responsible for the particular interpreta tions adopted or for the opinions expressed by the editors of the several Books, nor has he endeavoured to bring them into agreement with one another. It is inevitable that there should be differences of Opinion in regard to many questions of criticism and interpretation, and it seems best that these differences should find free expression in different volumes. He has endeavoured to secure, as far as possible, that the general scope and character of the series should be observed, and that views which have a reasonable claim to consideration should not be ignored, but he has felt it best that the final responsibility should, in general, rest with the individual contributors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Prophet, Isaiah: With Introduction and Notes The primary object of these Commentaries is to be exegetical, to interpret the meaning of each book of the Bible in the light of modern knowledge to English readers. The Editors will not deal, except subordinately, with questions of textual criticism or philology; but taking the English text in the Revised Version as their basis, they will aim at combining a hearty acceptance of critical principles with loyalty to the Catholic Faith. The series will be less elementary than the Cambridge Bible for Schools, less critical than the International Critical Commentary, less didactic than the Expositor's Bible; and it is hoped that it may be of use both to theological students and to the clergy, as well as to the growing number of educated laymen and laywomen who wish to read the Bible intelligently and reverently. Each commentary will therefore have (i) An Introduction stating the bearing of modern criticism and research upon the historical character of the book, and drawing out the contribution which the book, as a whole, makes to the body of religious truth. (ii) A careful paraphrase of the text with notes on the more difficult passages and, if need be, excursuses on any points of special importance either for doctrine, or ecclesiastical organization, or spiritual life. Book excerpt: In this lucid study, Berges interprets the scroll of Isaiah as a 'literal cathedral', written by many hands and empowered by the experience of sorrow and disaster, liberation and joy. Methodologically, the book combines synchronic and diachronic perspectives and paves the way to a fruitful conversation between them. The vast reception history of the Book of Isaiah in the Septuagint, the New Testament, and in rabbinic and Christian traditions, as well as in painting and music, is also illustrated by some of the most illuminating examples.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Prophecies of Isaiah The bible for home and school is intended to place the results of the best modern biblical scholarship at the disposal of the general reader. It does not seek to dupli cate other commentaries to which the student must turn. Its chief characteristics are (a) its rigid exclusion of all processes, both critical and exegetical, from its notes; (5) its presupposition and its use of the assured results of historical investigation and criticism wherever such results throw light on the biblical text; (6) its running analysis both in text and comment; (a') its brief explana tory notes adapted to the rapid reader; (c) its thorough but brief Introductions; (f) its use of the Revised Version Of 1881, supplemented with all important renderings in other versions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Isaiah: In Fifteen Studies Few books of the Old Testament have in modern times received the attention which has been accorded the book of Isaiah. An unusual flood of critical and expository literature has recently appeared, to which no careful student of the book would deny his very great indebted ness. Yet it must he confessed that the divisive criticism of Isaiah has developed into a sort of reckless surgery, until it has become well-nigh impossible to find a proof text in support of a reasonably conservative position, whose genuineness is not disputed by some one. It almost seems sometimes that doubt were in competition with doubt. As Whitehouse remarks in opposition to Lagarde, Duhm and Marti, who dissect Isa. As Edom is thus eliminated in one clause, it is necessary to operate on Bozrah in the other. (new Century Bible, Isaiah, vol: II., p. 303, II. The same is true of hosts of other passages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes, Critical, Explanatory, and Practical, on the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, Vol. 1 IT is with unaffected diffidence that this work is offered to the patronage of the Christian public. It has been prepared amidst the toils and responsibilities of a most laborious pastoral charge, and at such intervals as could be secured without seeming to infringe on the direct and immediate duties demanded in my station. Those hours have been, with scarcely an exception, the early morning hours 3 and whatever may be the manner 'in which this book may, be received by the public, whether it shall or shall not contribute in any degree to advance the knowledge of the truth, and the love of the Sacred Scriptures, its preparation, by requiring me to com. Mence each day with the direct contemplation of an interesting por tion of inspired truth, has for four years constituted one of the most delightful parts of 'my work. It is the production of many a labo rious, but many a pleasant hour and while I desire to render thanks to the Giver of life and health, that he has granted me strength to engage in these studies, I shall ever look back with gratitude to the deeply interesting moments in which I have been endeavouring to illustrate the Visions of Isaiah. Wheni commenced the work, i designed nothing farther than an enlargement of Lowth on Isaiah. It occurred to me that it might be useful to retain his Notes as a basis, with some additional illustra tions. But this plan was soon abandoned; and no other use has been made of Lowth than that which is common with other writers. Valuable as are his Notes, and beautiful as is his version, yet it was soon perceived, or thought to be perceived, that greater usefulness might be secured by enlarging the plan, and making a work entirely new. Very valuable helps have been furnished, since the time of Lowth, for the illustration of the Hebrew prophets; and it was deemed desirable to avail myself of them all, so far as it was in my power. Most of those helps will be found enumerated in the list of works on Isaiah, at the close of the Introduction, 8. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, Vol. 1 All who take delight in the Holy Scriptures are familiarly acquainted with the writings of the Prophet Isaiah. Every variety of taste finds in them its appropriate gratification. Lofty conceptions, illustrated by splendid imagery, and clothed in language usually copious and flowing, sometimes abrupt, but always graceful, leave no room for hesitation to pronounce him, with Bishop Lowth, to be "the most sublime and elegant of the Prophets of the Old Testament." He is regarded with peculiar veneration as an honest, fearless, and able messenger of the Most High God, boldly reproving nobles and monarchs, denouncing the judgments of Heaven against all transgressors, and asserting the claims of the Divine law and government above all human authority. In his Prophecies he takes a wide range, surveys those nations which power or wealth or learning or commerce had raised to the highest celebrity in those remote times, and describes their rise and fall, and wonderful revolutions, so eagerly traced by us in the page of history, as the execution of Jehovah's counsels, and the arrangements of unerring wisdom. But chiefly does he pour out rich instruction concerning the Messiah, whose life and sufferings, and death and glorious reign, he delineates so faithfully, and with such thrilling interest, that he has obtained the appellation of "The Evangelical Prophet." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Books of the Prophet Isaiah, Vol. 2 In preparing the First Volume of the Commentary on Isaiah, many attempts were made, but without success, to procure the French Translation. After much fruitless labour, and some expense, a copy of that rare work, which happens to be in the possession of the Parker Society, has been kindly lent to the Translator, who takes this opportunity of conveying his warmest thanks for this favour. The references in the foot-notes of the present and future Volumes will give some idea of the assistance derived from that source. But it has also supplied materials for a history, more complete than we could formerly give, of this Commentary, and of the forms in which it was successively brought before the public. Various scribes, on some occasions, united their efforts to obtain a perfect record of what had been uttered by the Reformer in his private Lessons, as they were called, which he delivered to students of theology. But, in the present instance, we are indebted almost exclusively to the earnest, judicious, and unwearied labours of one man, Mr. Nicolas Des Gallars, a minister of Geneva, from whose notes, after having been revised by the Author, the first Latin edition was printed in 1550. He appears to have executed, under the Authors eye, a French Translation, which came forth almost simultaneously with the Latin copy, and enjoyed the advantage of being known to be well authenticated. These first chapters give out the themes which run through all the rest of his prophecies. Like most introductions, they were pro bably written last, when the prophet collected and arranged his life's labours. The text deals with the three great thoughts, the leit-motifs that are sounded over and over again in the prophet's message.
