Book excerpt: In this lucid study, Berges interprets the scroll of Isaiah as a 'literal cathedral', written by many hands and empowered by the experience of sorrow and disaster, liberation and joy. Methodologically, the book combines synchronic and diachronic perspectives and paves the way to a fruitful conversation between them. The vast reception history of the Book of Isaiah in the Septuagint, the New Testament, and in rabbinic and Christian traditions, as well as in painting and music, is also illustrated by some of the most illuminating examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Isaiah is outstanding in its brilliance of style, poetic power, and foretaste of the hope of the gospel. It tells how God himself has provided the highway to holiness for those who have been redeemed. These are images that evoke the exodus from Egypt and foreshadow Christ's achievement at the cross. There is joy even in Isaiah's portrayal of judgment—rebuilding within the demolition, the new replacing the old—as world events reveal God's hand. In the visionary world of Isaiah, the varied themes and imagery of the Old Testament converge and blend as they project an extraordinary climax of the story of Israel and of the world. Barry Webb calls Isaiah the Romans of the Old Testament, where all the threads come together and the big picture of God's purposes are most clearly set forth. Attuned to the magnificent literary architecture of Isaiah, Webb escorts us through this prophecy and trains our ears and hearts to resonate with its great biblical-theological themes. Part of the beloved Bible Speaks Today series, The Message of Isaiah offers an insightful, readable exposition of the biblical text and thought-provoking discussion of how its meaning relates to contemporary life. Used by students and teachers around the world, the Bible Speaks Today commentaries are ideal for those studying or preaching the Bible and anyone who wants to delve deeper into the text. This revised edition of a classic volume features lightly updated language and a new interior design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major flashpoints in academic biblical studies in the past 125 years has centered on the authorship and dating of the book of Isaiah. Beginning in the late 1800s, some scholars suggested that this book may have been written by multiple people over a period of centuries, a view that contrasts with the traditional one that the entire book of Isaiah was written in the eighth century BC by the Judean prophet Isaiah ben Amoz. Because for many conservative scholars the latter position is the only one that respects the divine inspiration of the text, and because they also believe that this position is endorsed by Jesus in the New Testament, the differing conclusions of mainstream and conservative scholars regarding the authorship and dating of the book of Isaiah have long served to divide these groups. Bind Up the Testimony--a collection of essays from a colloquium held at Wheaton College in 2013--brings together a variety of evangelical responses to this issue. Although a few of the essays arrive at conservative conclusions regarding the authorship and dating of the book of Isaiah, most of them attempt to chart new, more nuanced directions for thinking on this subject, and suggest that careful attention to the (complicated) compositional history of the book of Isaiah need not be a hindrance--and can, in fact, be a help--to Christians who understand the book of Isaiah as divinely inspired Scripture that has spoken to God's people throughout the ages and that continues to speak to them today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of Isaiah' prophetic writings, the resurrected Lord taught, "Search these things diligently; for great are the words of Isaiah" (3 Nephi 32:1). Yet no chapters in the Book of Mormon are more difficult to understand than the Isaiah passages quoted by Nephi, Jacob, Abinadi, and Christ himself. The 17 essays in Isaiah in the Book of Mormon take a variety of approaches in seeking to help readers make the most of Isaiah's teachings. The contributing scholars draw on the Book of Mormon prophets as knowledgeable guides, examining how and why those ancient writers used and interpreted Isaiah's prophetic teachings. They explain Nephi's keys for understanding the great prophet, use historical and linguistic information to clarify his meanings, examine recurring themes, and reflect on the influence of these texts on ancient and modern saints.

It meets the needs of the specialist but most of it should be intelligible to preachers and teachers who know little or no Hebrew. The Introduction discusses the literary structure of the prophecy, the theology of Deutero-Isaiah (with some reference to current theological debate), and the problem of Salvation History. The exegetical notes are based on the author's own translation from the Hebrew text. The purpose of the book is to elucidate the message of the Prophet in the context of Scripture as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""Come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!"" Isaiah's words are deeply loved by many who attend Sunday services. But how many can say that they have actually read this book? This commentary invites you to read Isaiah from the era when it reached its sixty-six-chapter form and came to be part of Israel's sacred writings. Three memories helped to give shape to the Isaiah scroll. The first memory is of the destruction of Jerusalem in 587 BCE. How could God have allowed that to happen? The opening section of the scroll addresses that question. The second memory involves the fall of Babylon after 562 BCE. People, nations, and even empires rise and fall. The second section of the scroll addresses war and the sorrows of war. The third memory is of Cyrus of Persia, who allowed the exiles to return home after 539 BCE. His actions are presupposed, not just in the joyful poetry of the latter chapters of the scroll, but also in the confidence in God's love that runs through the entire scroll. God is the Lord of all nations and of all creation. Isaiah is a theological interpretation of past history. It is a passionate call for people to live with integrity, compassion, and hope. ""Joe Everson's scholarship and experience as a teacher of Scripture are on display in his new study of the book of Isaiah. This 'synchronic' reading, as he describes it, provides reliable historical, theological, and literary perspectives on the full book of Isaiah. This commentary is a clear and accessible guide for Bible students and curious readers alike."" --Scott Tunseth, General Editor, Fortress Press ""The strengths of this work are obvious. This is a unified reading of the book of Isaiah that is not uncritical. Full attention is given to the historical context in the post-exilic era and how the message of the book interacts with that. The interpretive comment is succinct, to the point, and well presented. The integration of a translation and comment is appealing."" --Patrick D. Miller, Professor Emeritus, Princeton Theological Seminary, ""The in-depth commentary offers an understanding of the book to anyone who wishes to read and learn, and the commentary provides common ground for Jews and Christians to reflect together about the message of Isaiah."" --Belle Michael, California Lutheran University ""This commentary by A. Joseph Everson is concise and to the point. It is not overbearing or tedious; rather, it is insightful and well-focused. This work will assist readers to deeply explore and understand what is most important in the Isaiah scroll. From the post-exilic era, the Isaiah scroll comes into focus as a theological interpretation of past history."" --Jeremy Kays, Journey the Church, Camarillo, California A. Joseph Everson is professor emeritus of religion at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, California. He has taught Hebrew and biblical studies for over forty years at Luther College in Iowa; at St. John's University in Minnesota; as a pastor in St. Paul from 1975-1990; and at California Lutheran University, where he was a member of the Religion Department from 1990-2012.

Raised in the king's palace, Isaiah, unlike other prophets, was given a unique perspective to counsel kings and foretell the coming of the King of Kings. His family relationships most likely created an internal conflict for him as he delivered the difficult messages Jehovah God had for His people and their kings. Long before Isaiah ever knew the events that would unfold in his life, God had been at work in him to mold and shape him into a man to whom He could entrust this extraordinary assignment. But don't lose sight that Isaiah was a flawed ordinary man placed in God-ordered circumstances to be a follower through whom God would accomplish extraordinary things. Through this novella, you'll discover the heart and character of the prophet called to proclaim the promise of the coming Messiah.
