Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unity of the Book of Genesis It professes to trace the growth of this legislation from simple and primitive forms to those which are more complex and which imply a later and more developed civilization. And it confidently affirms that these laws could not have been committed to writing in their present form for many centuries after the age of Moses. These hypotheses are discussed in a general way in my "Higher Criticism of the Pentateuch," where the fallacy and inconclusiveness of the reasoning by which they are defended and the falsity of the conclusions deduced from them are exposed. In order to a complete refutation of these hypotheses it is necessary to show still further by a detailed examination their inapplicability to, and incompatibility with, the phenomena of the Pentateuch, and that, so far from solving the question of its origin, they are destitute of any real basis; they find no support in the Pentateuch itself, but are simply the creations of learned ingenuity and a lively imagination. The present treatise occupies itself exclusively with the document hypothesis, and aims to prove that the book of Genesis is not a compilation from different documents, but is the continuous work of a single writer. The demonstration that this hypothesis has no foothold in Genesis effectually overturns it for the rest of the Pentateuch, or, if the critics please, the Hexateuch. It took its rise in Genesis; the most plausible arguments in its favor are drawn from that book; and the verdict rendered by that book substantially settles the case for those that follow. It is on the basis of the assumption that it is firmly established in Genesis that it is carried through the Hexateuch. If that assumption is proved to be false, the hypothesis collapses entirely. What is here proposed is a critical study of Genesis from beginning to end, chapter by chapter and section by section. Book excerpt: The first volume in The Bible for School and Home series, covering the Creation, the Fall, the Flood, the call of Abraham, and the story of Joseph, with Smyth showing at every turn how the individual stories fit into God's overall plan. All eight volumes in The Bible for School and Home series, used in Charlotte Mason's schools, are intended for parents and teachers to use in preparing Bible lessons for the children in their charge. Each of the volumes contains two dozen or more lessons, preceded by the same lengthy introduction to sound teaching practices, a section which is well worth reading. For each lesson, Smyth specifies the Biblical passages to cover, then provides background information you can incorporate in your telling of the story to gain the interest of your children, carefully framed questions you can use to draw their attention to the main points, and ways you might direct the conversation to stir their affections and their actions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Book of Genesis With the exception of the four gospels, I suppose there is no book in the Bible more deeply interesting than the Book of Genesis. It comes to us with all the freshness of God's first book to His people. The contents are varied, highly instructive, and most precious to the stu dent of God's entire book. These Notes are again laid at the Master's feet, in earnest prayer that He would take them up and send them forth under the stamp of His own divine approval. Amen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Genesis The incomplete and fragmentary character Of the following notes has delayed their appearance in their present shape, and has caused me to hesitate long as to the expediency of publishing them. But the recep tion already accorded to my father's writings has been such as to confirm my own conviction that any authentic record of his thoughts possesses an intrinsic interest and value transcending the mere form in which they are clothed; and I believe that the Notes on Genesis will not be found deficient in those qualities which mark the works already published. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genesis The following outline lessons on Genesis form part of a series originally drawn up for the use of my own Class and of the members of my Staff who might wish to avail themselves of them. They have been lent at various times to teachers in other schools, but as further requests have been made for them, it has been thougth advisable to publish the notes on Genesis, in order that they may be available either as a text-book for students or as a book of outline lessons for teachers. Each lesson contains the story of one or more chapters of Genesis, together with the moral and spiritual truths most clearly to be deduced from them. When used by teachers, these outline lessons will naturally be supplemented by wide reading, and adapted to the age and general intelligence of the class under instruction. In advanced Sixth Form or Bible Class work it would be advisable to make additions, and to take up points which are omitted in these outlines, either because they are too difficult for the average scholar, or because they were not generally applicable. For a boys school there are one or two lessons which could with advantage be added, but they have not been given here because for a girls school and for younger children they were not so necessary. For Junior work, the lessons should be simplified. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Companion to the Book of Genesis The author of the following work does not hesitate to acknowledge, that he offers it to the public with some solicitude. Apart from any per sonal considerations, which it would be affectation wholly to disclaim, there are others of a nature eu tirely different and vastly higher, which must make a strong impression on every writer who feels him self to be a moral and responsible agent. To com ment on the sacred Scriptures is to interpret what God formerly revealed and therefore, the attempt should be made with due seriousness of mind, and suitable intellectual preparation. The expositor should possess a competent acquaintance with the principles and laws of interpretation, and also with the various facts which bear, either directly or in directly, oh the points to be illustrated. He should exercise a proper care and judgment in selecting from the sources of information, and in applying his knowledge to the obscurities which are to be cleared up, and the difficulties which are to be removed. Whether these requisitions shall appear to be met. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on the Book of Genesis Important as Scripture Commentaries are, and indispensable as they must be to the rapid progress of the gospel in Spanish speaking lands, it will be readily seen that the demand for them among the possible Evangelical communicants (most of them very poor) found in Europe, America, North Africa and the former Insular possessions of Spain, including ministers and students for the ministry, is not sufficient to induce any publishing house to risk money in a work like mine; so that I am reduced to the necessity of doing all the work, and then raising all the money to print it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genesis and Science, or the First Leaves of the Bible Where I could not adopt their arguments or make their conclusions my own, I endeavoured to show, from what are deemed authoritative statements, how great is the confusion among themselves, and how utterly without weight and value, in consequence, must be the assertions hazarded by scientists against the Book of Genesis. If censured, as I shall be, for not recklessly deciding some of the burning questions of the day, I shall quietly submit and take it very patiently. Is there not a time for everything '3 If revelation has long since closed its canon, certainly science has not, and before this is done, it is vain to apprehend danger for the cause of truth.
