Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller! The View cohost and New York Times bestselling author Sunny Hostin dazzles with this brilliant novel about a life-changing summer along the beaches of Martha's Vineyard. Welcome to Oak Bluffs, the most exclusive Black beach community in the country. Known for its gingerbread Victorian-style houses and modern architectural marvels, this picturesque town hugging the sea is a mecca for the crème de la crème of Black society—where Michelle and Barack Obama vacation and Meghan Markle has shopped for a house for her mom. Black people have lived in this pretty slip of the Vineyard since the 1600s and began buying property in the 1800s, making this posh town the embodiment of “old money.” Thirty years ago, Amelia Vaux Tanner and her husband built a house high on the bluffs, a cottage they named Chateau Laveau. For decades, “Ama” played host to American presidents, Wall Street titans, and cultural icons. But her favorite guests have always been her three “goddaughters:” Esperanza “Perry” Soto, a beautiful, talented Afro-Latina lawyer with Ama’s strong, yet guarded personality; Olivia Jones, a gifted Wall Street analyst with Ama’s brilliant, logical mind; and Billie Hayden, a gifted marine biologist and rule-breaker with Ama’s courageous free spirit. Growing up, these three goddaughters from different backgrounds came together each summer at Chateau Laveau. As adults, the cottage is a place this trio of successful yet very different women go to escape, to slow down from their hectic lives, share private time with Ama, and enjoy the gorgeous weather, cool water, and stunning views Oak Bluffs offers. This summer on the Bluffs, however, will be different. An era is ending: Ama, now nearing seventy-one, is moving to the south of France to reunite with her college sweetheart. She has invited Perry, Olivia, and Billie to spend one last golden summer together with her the way they did when they were kids. And when fall comes, she is going to give the house to one of them. Each of the women wants the house desperately. Each is grappling with a secret she fears will hurt her and her chances. By the end of summer, old ties will fray, new bonds will be created, and these three found sisters will discover they aren’t the only ones with something to hide. Ama has a few secrets of her own. What she has to give them is far more than property. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, she will tell these surrogate daughters she fiercely loves and protects everything they never knew they needed to know.

Book excerpt: 'Tense, atmospheric and unsettling, this book will stay with you long after you turn the last page, and long after you turn out the lights.' – Christian White When a school group of teenage girls goes missing in the remote wilderness of Tasmania’s Great Western Tiers, the people of Limestone Creek are immediately on alert. Three decades ago, five young girls disappeared in the area of those dangerous bluffs, and the legend of ‘the Hungry Man’ still haunts locals to this day. Now, authorities can determine that the teacher, Eliza Ellis, was knocked unconscious, so someone on the mountain was up to foul play. Jordan Murphy, the local dealer and father of missing student Jasmine, instantly becomes the prime suspect. But Detective Con Badenhorst knows that in a town this size – with corrupt cops, small-town politics, and a teenage YouTube sensation – everyone is hiding something, and bluffing is second nature. When a body is found, mauled, at the bottom of a cliff, suspicion turns to a wild animal – but that can’t explain why she was discovered barefoot, her shoes at the top of the cliff, laces neatly tied. 'This atmospheric, scenery-rich crime tale embodies both the beauty and brutality of nature – especially human nature...The Bluffs establishes Perry as a fierce new talent.' Apple Books 'The narrative races along, pulling the reader from page to page with a freight-train momentum that starts with the first word and ends with the final full stop.' Sunday Examiner ‘A riveting story that will give even a seasoned thriller reader goosebumps... The Bluffs is a perfect winter read that will pull you in and won’t let go. Perry has managed to exceed expectations for his debut novel. Full of mystery, crime and a certain hair-raising charm, you won’t be disappointed.' Better Reading

Book excerpt: The Emmy Award-winning legal journalist and co-host of The View Sunny Hostin chronicles her journey from growing up in a South Bronx housing project to becoming an assistant U.S. attorney and journalist in this powerful memoir that offers an intimate and unique look at identity, intolerance, and injustice. “What are you?” has followed Sunny Hostin from the beginning of her story, as she grew up half Puerto Rican and half African-American raised by teenage parents in the South Bronx. Escaping poverty and the turbulence of her early life through hard work, a bit of luck and earning academic scholarships to college and law school, Sunny immersed herself in the workings of the criminal justice system. In Washington, D.C., Sunny became a federal prosecutor, soon parlaying her wealth of knowledge of the legal system into a successful career as a legal journalist. She was one of the first national reporters to cover Trayvon Martin’s death—which her producers erroneously labeled “just a local story.” Today, an inescapable voice from the top echelons of news and entertainment, Sunny uses her platform to advocate for social justice and give a voice to the marginalized. In her signature no-holds-barred, straight-up style, Sunny opens up and shares her intimate struggles with fertility and personal turmoil, and reflects on the high-stakes cases and stories she worked on as a prosecutor and during her time at CNN, Fox News, ABC and The View. Timely, poignant, and moving, I Am These Truths is the story of a woman living between two worlds, and learning to bridge them together to fight for what’s right.

Book excerpt: In the second Lauren Rousseau Mystery by Agatha Award-winning author Edith Maxwell, a grisly murder stirs up long-buried secrets surrounding the disappearance and death of Lauren’s father . . . As a bitter controversy rages over a secretive local land trust in her small New England town, linguistics professor Lauren Rousseau is not wholly surprised when she stumbles upon the dead body of one of the trust’s key members, his throat neatly slit from ear to ear. The only question is which of the many potential suspects is capable of so violent an act. But then the bluffs where she discovered the victim yield a shocking clue, one that may lead to the killer—and may be tied to her own father’s mysterious disappearance more than a decade before. As Lauren begins looking for answers to both mysteries among her fellow townspeople and even members of her own family, long-hidden secrets begin to emerge about the victim’s volatile sister, corruption at the heart of the land trust, and even about her father’s life. And as surprising revelations begin to mount, along with threats to her own life, Lauren knows she must pursue the cases to the very end—no matter how disturbing the solutions may be . . . This book was originally published as Bluffing Is Murder under the name Tace Baker. Book excerpt: The Seventh United States Cavalry, under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer, was composed of twelve companies at the Battle of the Little Big Horn River on June 25, 1876. Custer’s plan of attack required that he divide his regiment by splitting the companies into three separate battalions. These battalions would be commanded by Major Marcus Reno (A,G,M), Captain Fredrick Benteen (D,H,K), and Custer (C,E,F,I,L). Company B, under Captain Thomas McDougall, was detailed to guard the pack train. Reno’s orders were to take his battalion and “Charge the village and you will be supported by the whole outfit.” That didn’t happen. Almost everyone has heard of “Custer’s Last Stand” in one form or another, but are surprised to learn that only five companies of the regiment were actually defeated by the Sioux and Cheyenne warriors. The surviving companies of Reno’s and Benteen’s Battalions, plus, Company B and the pack train, not only survived a three-day siege, but also had a very compelling story to tell. This, then, is the story of one of those surviving companies, Company A, commanded by Captain Myles Moylan. More than that, it is the personal story of the men in that company and their experiences down in the valley and up on the bluffs, along the Little Big Horn River on June 25, 26, and 27, 1876.

Book excerpt: Evan Thomas's startling account of how the underrated Dwight Eisenhower saved the world from nuclear holocaust. Upon assuming the presidency in 1953, Dwight Eisenhower set about to make good on his campaign promise to end the Korean War. Yet while Eisenhower was quickly viewed by many as a doddering lightweight, behind the bland smile and simple speech was a master tactician. To end the hostilities, Eisenhower would take a colossal risk by bluffing that he might use nuclear weapons against the Communist Chinese, while at the same time restraining his generals and advisors who favored the strikes. Ike's gamble was of such magnitude that there could be but two outcomes: thousands of lives saved, or millions of lives lost. A tense, vivid and revisionist account of a president who was then, and still is today, underestimated, Ike's Bluff is history at its most provocative and thrilling.

Book excerpt: Discover the secret history of America's submarine warfare in this fast-paced and deeply researched chronicle of adventure and intrigue during the Cold War that reads like a spy thriller. Blind Man's Bluff is an exciting, epic story of adventure, ingenuity, courage, and disaster beneath the sea. This New York Times bestseller reveals previously unknown dramas, such as: The mission to send submarines wired with self-destruct charges into the heart of Soviet seas to tap crucial underwater telephone cables. How the Navy's own negligence may have been responsible for the loss of the USS Scorpion, a submarine that disappeared, all hands lost, in 1968. The bitter war between the CIA and the Navy and how it threatened to sabotage one of America's most important undersea missions. The audacious attempt to steal a Soviet submarine with the help of eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes, and how it was doomed from the start. A magnificent achievement in investigative reporting, Blind Man's Bluff reads like a spy thriller, but with one important difference -- everything in it is true.
