Book excerpt: Professing a policy of cultural and social integration, the American settlement house movement made early progress in helping immigrants adjust to life in American cities. However, when African Americans migrating from the rural South in the early twentieth century began to replace white immigrants in settlement environs, most houses failed to redirect their efforts toward their new neighbors. Nationally, the movement did not take a concerted stand on the issue of race until after World War II. In Black Neighbors, Elisabeth Lasch-Quinn analyzes this reluctance of the mainstream settlement house movement to extend its programs to African American communities, which, she argues, were assisted instead by a variety of alternative organizations. Lasch-Quinn recasts the traditional definitions, periods, and regional divisions of settlement work and uncovers a vast settlement movement among African Americans. By placing community work conducted by the YWCA, black women's clubs, religious missions, southern industrial schools, and other organizations within the settlement tradition, she highlights their significance as well as the mainstream movement's failure to recognize the enormous potential in alliances with these groups. Her analysis fundamentally revises our understanding of the role that race has played in American social reform.

Book excerpt: In the 1950s and 1960s, as the white residents, real estate agents, and municipal officials of many American cities fought keep African Americans out of traditionally white neighborhoods, Philadelphia’s West Mount Airy became one of the first neighborhoods in the nation where residents came together around a community-wide mission toward intentional integration. As West Mount Airy experienced transition, homeowners fought economic and legal policies that encouraged white flight and threatened the quality of local schools, seeking to find an alternative to racial separation without knowing what they would create in its place. In Making Good Neighbors, Abigail Perkiss tells the remarkable story of West Mount Airy, drawing on archival research and her oral history interviews with residents to trace their efforts, which began in the years following World War II and continued through the turn of the twenty-first century. The organizing principles of neighborhood groups like the West Mount Airy Neighbors Association (WMAN) were fundamentally liberal and emphasized democracy, equality, and justice; the social, cultural, and economic values of these groups were also decidedly grounded in middle-class ideals and white-collar professionalism. As Perkiss shows, this liberal, middle-class framework would ultimately become contested by more militant black activists and from within WMAN itself, as community leaders worked to adapt and respond to the changing racial landscape of the 1960s and 1970s. The West Mount Airy case stands apart from other experiments in integration because of the intentional, organized, and long-term commitment on the part of WMAN to biracial integration and, in time, multiracial and multiethnic diversity. The efforts of residents in the 1950s and 1960s helped to define the neighborhood as it exists today.

Book excerpt: One of the most natural representations for modelling spatial objects in computers is discrete representations in the form of a 2D square raster and a 3D cubic grid, since these are naturally obtained by segmenting sensor images. However, the main difficulty is that discrete representations are only approximations of the original objects, and can only be as accurate as the cell size allows. If digitisation is done by real sensor devices, then there is the additional difficulty of sensor distortion. To overcome this, digital shape features must be used that abstract from the inaccuracies of digital representation. In order to ensure the correspondence of continuous and digital features, it is necessary to relate shape features of the underlying continuous objects and to determine the necessary resolution of the digital representation. This volume gives an overview and a classification of the actual approaches to describe the relation between continuous and discrete shape features that are based on digital geometric concepts of discrete structures. Audience: This book will be of interest to researchers and graduate students whose work involves computer vision, image processing, knowledge representation or representation of spatial objects.

Anthropologist Robert M. Laughlin has been a part of the group since its beginnings, and he offers a unique perspective on its development as a Mayan cultural force. Residential segregation limits the possibilities for contaets between whites and blaeks, and as a result, deereases the potential for social unity. Resi dential segregation has been seen to lead to a sense of eonfinement among ghetto residents which exaeerbates alI the other problems that affeet these neighborhoods. As a result, the spatial separation of the raees has been viewed as a serious threat to the stability of the society (U.S. National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, 1968: vii). Spatial separation also leads to other specific problems sueh as de laclo sehool segregation, while segregated sehools have been declared inherently unequal. Furthermore, the movement of blaeks to the suburbs that has oecurred in 2 recent years has not led to decreased patterns of isolation. Instead, this shift has refleeted an expansion of existing ghetto areas aeross city bounda ries. For example, Cleveland's black ghetto has expanded into and through East Cleveland which is a distinct municipality; (see Arthur D. Little, 1969) and Washington, D.C. 's ghetto has expanded northeast into suburban Prinee Georges County (Zehner and Chapin, 1974). 3 Glantz and Delaney (1973) in a study of 14 ofthe 18largest metropolitan are as, found that the degree of segregation of blacks within particular suburban municipalities had not changed much between 1969 and 1970. Blacks were coneentrated in the same suburban eommunities in 1970 as in 1960.

Book excerpt: Political yard signs are one of the most ubiquitous and conspicuous features of American political campaigns, yet they have received relatively little attention as a form of political communication or participation. In Politics on Display, Todd Makse, Scott L. Minkoff, and Anand E. Sokhey tackle this phenomenon to craft a larger argument about the politics of identity and space in contemporary America. Documenting political life in two suburban communities and a major metropolitan area, they use an unprecedented research design that leverages street-level observation of the placement of yard signs and neighborhood-specific survey research that delves into the attitudes, behavior, and social networks of residents. The authors then integrate these data into a geo-database that also includes demographic and election data. Supplemented by nationally-representative data sources, the book brings together insights from political communication, political psychology, and political geography. Against a backdrop of conflict and division, this book advances a new understanding of how citizens experience campaigns, why many still insist on airing their views in public, and what happens when social spaces become political spaces.
