Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Birds of Hull, Massachusetts This list, for it is but little more than a list, I have made up of birds that have either been seen by myself or by my friend Mr. B. and his son, both of whom are well aquainted with our birds, while a very few have been reported to me by gunners. I have however, only given those in this list that I feel quite sure occur, as I know that it is very easy to make mistakes and the temptations are strong to make as large a list as possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Supplement to the Birds of Essex County, Massachusetts Fifteen years have passed since Memoir III of the Nuttall Ornithological Club, "The Birds of Essex County, Massachusetts," was published. In these fifteen years many changes have taken place in the bird-life of the County, many more observers have studied it, and many notes have been accumulated. It is the purpose of this Supplement to bring our knowledge of the birds of the County up to date, and in order that it may be complete in itself all the species are listed whether or not there are any changes or additions in the annotations. Changes are made in the nomenclature wherever necessary to conform to the latest American Ornithologists Union Check-list.1 As several species new to the list have been added, the serial numbers are changed. The additions are denoted by an asterisk (*). In the original Memoir I gave in detail the habits and field-marks of most of the water-birds and of several other birds of especial interest for the County. In this Supplement I have added to the notes on these birds, wherever possible, have increased this list by the addition of the hawks and some others, and in many cases have laid special stress on courtship habits, the study of which in the last fifteen years has especially interested me. When the original Memoir was published, there were none living in Essex County sufficiently interested in birds to become members of the American Ornithologists' Union. At the present time there are twelve members listed from the County. In addition there is a very active club, - the Essex County Ornithological Club, - with a membership of about fifty having its headquarters and monthly meetings at the Peabody Museum in Salem. The Club was founded in 1916, but for some eight years prior many of the present members were in the habit of making an annual trip by canoe on the Ipswich River at the height of the warbler migration in May. In preparing this Memoir I have consulted the records of the Club, of which I have the honor to be a charter member. The first number of the annual Bulletin of the Club appeared in December, 1919. The number of contributors of notes and records to this Supplement has increased to a great extent. Their names will be found in the Annotated List in connection with their contributions. To all of them I wish to express my grateful thanks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Berkshire County: Massachusetts Berkshire is the westernmost county of Massachusetts and extends across the state, from Connecticut on the south to Vermont on the north. Its western border is formed by the New York line, and on the east it is bordered by the counties of Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire. Its length from north to south is about fifty miles; its width, though fairly constant, varies from twenty-four to fourteen miles. The extremes of latitude are 42 2 N. and 42 44 N., and it is comprised between the meridians 73 W. and 73 30 W. With the exception of Worcester and Barnstable counties, none of the political divisions of the mainland of Massachusetts possess such a marked topographical individuality as Berkshire county. "The Berkshires" constitute a well-defined region - one which, from its natural beauty, is constantly becoming more widely known and loved, and it is partly on account of this ever increasing popular interest in the region, that the authors have felt justified in presenting in this paper their knowledge of the avifauna of Berkshire. Two ranges of hills, running north and south, and separated by valleys of varying width, constitute the most marked feature of the topography of Berkshire. Along the western, or New York, border, run the Taconics, a series of more or less isolated hills, through which comparatively deep side valleys have been worn. This range includes Berlin Mountain (2804 feet) on the north, Potter Mountain (2410 feet), Perry's Peak (2077 feet), and the great mass of Mount Everett, better known in Berkshire as the Dome (2624 feet), which occupies the southwestern corner of the county. The eastern half of the county, as well as the western part of the adjoining counties to the eastward, is occupied by a broad mass of rugged upland, including a comparatively broad watershed, with a steep western and a long eastern slope. This rugged mass forms the greater part of the "Berkshire Hills," so called. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reports on the Fishes, Reptiles and Birds of Massachusetts On the 3d of March, 1830, a resolve passed the Legislature of Massachusetts, authorizing a general Trigonometrical Survey of the Commonwealth. This was followed, on the 5th of June of the same year, by a Resolve, introduced at the suggestion of Governor Lincoln, authorizing him to appoint a "suitable person to make a Geological Examination of the Commonwealth, in connexion with the General Survey." Under this Resolve Prof. Hitchcock was appointed, and the manner in which he accomplished its objects is shown by his admirable Report, published in 1833. In conformity with a Resolve of the Legislature, of February 2d, 1831, he was directed "to cause to be annexed to his report, a list of the native Mineralogical, Botanical and Zoological productions of the Commonwealth, so far as it may be practicable to ascertain the same, within the limits of the appropriation already made." In the execution of this part of the commission, he received and acknowledged the "assistance of several gentlemen distinguished for their acquaintance with particular branches of natural history." The catalogues which were formed, were, in almost every instance, the first complete catalogues of the productions of the State, which had been attempted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of Massachusetts and Other New England States, Vol. 3: Land Birds From Sparrows to Thrushes The editor of a posthumous volume is under a handicap in endeavoring to express the feelings of the author of the book to the many individuals who assisted in its preparation. Fortunately, I had come to know Mr. Forbush rather intimately during the several years immediately preceding his death, when it was my privilege to act as his assistant in pre paring material for these volumes. Edward Howe Forbush was a'man of great attainments in the fields of economic ornithology and of wildlife conservation, but he was also a man of great modesty. While he was continually consulted by scientists of the highest standing as well as by the veriest tyros in bird study, he was always ready to give full credit to those who had contributed in any way to his fund of information. It was his intention to acknowledge his indebted ness to all those who had assisted him, in the preface of the third volume of The Birds of Massachusetts. It is not possible for me to name all those to whom Mr. Forbush felt indebted, but all who assisted him and whose work is not herein acknowledged, will have the satisfaction of knowing that they have made a contribution to a work of real value, which has added to the knowledge and pleasure of countless individuals. First to whom Mr. Forbush tendered grateful recognition was his wife, to whom he was married in 1882 and who survives him. Throughout the long period of their life together, Mrs. Forbush not only encouraged him in his chosen work, but was of much assistance to him in many ways. Although crippled by illness in recent years, she spent many long hours in reading and revising his manuscript and in painstaking correction of the proof of The Birds of Massachusetts, and her criticisms were always constructive and helpful.
