Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Breconshire Having for many years been in the habit of jotting down the occur rence of the rarer British birds in this county, as the reports have reached me from time to time, and as no list of the birds of this county has hitherto been published, I determined, at the suggestion of a few friends, to bring out the same in a series of papers, Which have appeared accordingly in The Zoologist.' Owing to the favourable recep tion accorded to the above by some of our leading ornithologists, I have thought it desirable to reprint theviii. Preface TO former issue. Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. Our readers see the books the same way that their first readers did decades or a hundred or more years ago. Books from that period are often spoiled by imperfections that did not exist in the original. Imperfections could be in the form of blurred text, photographs, or missing pages. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Generally, Trieste books are purchased singly - on demand, however they may also be purchased in bulk. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Among the Birds in Northern Shires Unquestionably these northern shires from an ornitho logical point of view are much more interesting than the southern, and especially the south-western counties. Their avifauna is richer, and presents far greater variety, notably during the breeding season; whilst the marvellous pheno menon of Migration there unfolds itself each season in a manner that is never remarked elsewhere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Oxfordshire With the exception of occasional and casual observations made during visits to the other districts, my own personal investigations have been confined to the northern part of the county, where I have lived most of my life. In tracing therefore the history of our more common species, my re marks, unless the contrary is expressed, must be understood to apply more particularly to that district, although probably true of the whole of the county. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Dorsetshire: A Contribution to the Natural History of the County There never was a more favourable time than the present for the study of the history of the habits of birds. During the last ten years there have issued from the press, in parts, no less than four important ornithological works, three of which are now complete. (1.) Dresser's "Birds of Europe," in 8 vols. 4to, 1871-81, supplies a want which was only partially satisfied by Bree's "Birds of Europe not Observed in the British Islands," being, as its title implies, much more comprehensive. (2.) Yarrell's "British Birds," 4th edition, in 4 vols. 8vo, 1871-1885, of which the first two volumes (including the Accipitres Passeres and Picarioe) were edited by Professor Newton, and the last two (dealing with the remaining orders) by Mr. Howard Saunders. The important additions made to our knowledge since Yarrell's first publication on the subject, and embodied in this edition, makes it practically a new work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Birds and Their Nestlings Since permanent interest in any subject cannot be awakened through occasional lessons, it is believed that much profit will come from a few weeks' continuous read ing along a single line, - reading which will create a love for the beautiful through understanding. Ignorance closes the door to much of our best' literature, which can be interpreted only through a sympathetic familiarity with nature. Color, sound, and movement are always attractive to childhood, and nowhere can they be found in such pleas ing combination as in the bird world. The study of its busy little inhabitants in their natural environment will not only add pleasure to the walks of the child, but will help him to a knowledge of the adaptation of all life to its surroundings. It will also lead to the intelligent appreciation of litera ture and music. Since the birth of time the birds have inspired poets and musicians. They have also given the keenest pleas ure to countless thousands who have never attempted to express what they felt. To interest a child in these guests of our groves, - these feathered entertainers who are also workers in our fields and orchards, - is to put him in possession of a wellspring of interest as enduring as life itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Essex: A Contribution to the Natural History of the County The publication of this work is an attempt to meet what has, I believe, been a long-felt want, similar works having met with acceptance in most other counties. Students of Nature have ever been fully alive to the importance of works describing the Fauna of Counties or other local areas. From such works, the larger general histories of particular countries and regions are built up. Ornithologists, especially, have been very active in publishing local works of this kind. There are now very few of the larger and more important English counties in which some attempt has not been made by a local observer to describe in the form of a book the species of birds which have been observed from time to time to frequent his own particular district. Stevenson's Birds of Norfolk, Mitchell's Birds of Lancashire, Clarke and Roebuck's Vertebrata of Yorkshire, Babington's Birds of Suffolk, Harting's Birds of Middlesex, Macphcrson and Duckworth's Birds of Cumberland, Smith's Birds of Somersetshire, and Mansell-Pleydell's Birds of Dorsetshire, are a few good instances of the kind of work referred to, while there are many more, equally worthy of mention, and others arc known to be in preparation. Hitherto, however, the birds of Essex have not found a chronicler. It is to supply this omission that I have laboured. My present work, for which I have been collecting information and materials for over fifteen years, will, I trust, interest all lovers of Nature, and, in particular, all bird-students, not only within our own county but also throughout Great Britain.
