Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S. N. Ejedepang-Koge is a well read man who inspires many people, young and old. From a large African family, he has always lived in a large household. He gradually emerged into modernity from this traditional socialization through a determined pursuit of western education, always preparing concurrently for two certificates, because he wished to be amongst the best at any time. Privileged in a mass of the disadvantaged, he believes, in sharing so as to help others to rise. As a result he always asserts that a house is never full. His house is always full of school children and, civil servants who came to chase their files in Yaounde to the extent that his house was called a Bakossi Embassy. Whenever, his children stayed for sometime without guests in the house, they worried and asked whether they had angered visitors. There is always something to eat and those who require assistance for transportation or to complete their files always receive it. A professional teacher, Mr. Ejedepang-Koge has worked with the Church and the government; he had the advantage of working in many parts of his country Cameroon. He also served as Cultural Counsellor at Cameroon Embassy in Washington DC. He learnt to live with joy and pain and, in the diversities of his country. He is approachable and patient with all types of people. He stresses that no one should be treated with disdain, for every individual has something to offer at one time or other of our life. Intent on promoting education, he is co-founder of three private schools in Cameroon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author paints the rural geographical and sociological environment in which he was raised and highlights the careful parental care and the early death of his mother at the age of 32 years. He was then 12 years old and his siblings 8, 5, and 3 years old. This provides the base from which traditional and western education were pursued with determination and vision as the source of progress and power, thanks to the encouragement of his father. Armed with a liberal and professional education, Ejedepang-Koge, a teacher through and through, his autobiography reads like a book on the education and constitutional changes in Cameroon. He served and successively as a teacher, Head of Service, Deputy Director in both the Departments of Private and Secondary Education, Director of Education of Private Education in the Ministry of National Education and, in Diplomatic Service as Cultural Counsellor in the Embassy of Cameroon in Washington DC. By virtue of such services, he mirrors beautifully the joys and pains of a conscientious and patriotic civil servant striving to do his duty honestly and refusing to be discouraged and thwarted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foundation of Tombel Town has influenced the rapid evolution of Bakossiland in terms of the growth, distribution and diversity of the population and, the diversity of economic activities. Though peripheral in location, Tombel Town and its environs (Tombel Sub-Division) have become the centre of attraction, the pull-centre of internal and external migration and, the economic pull centre within Kupe Mwanenguba. This migratory trend continues unabated, except for close to ten years after the violent explosion or Crisis of 31st December 1966. The rapid growth in the diversity of population has promoted the cosmopolitan nature of the Town and the Tombel Sub-Division and given rise to the creation many small economic self-employing activities as well as diverse needs that have to be satisfied. This has enabled Tombel to become the economic engine of Bakossiland, and indeed, of the whole Kupe-Mwanenguba Division. Agriculture is the heart of the economic life Tombel Sub-Division and Kupe-Mwanenguba. Both cash and food crops do very well, But. The lack of good roads, difficulty to acquire inputs such as relevant chemicals for protecting growing plants and developing fruits from disease, and the lack of adapted tools, impede increased productivity and the preservability of harvested agricultural crops. Secondly, the lack of easy and affordable means of transport impedes both production and, the transport of agricultural products from farm to market. Transportation is prohibitive because the roads are in very bad condition through most of the year in this very rainy area. Delicate crops are difficult to preserve and undergo fast degradation and much loss while waiting to be transported and, during transportation from farms to the markets. As a result, peasants do not receive the full value and price of their produce. Lack of roads and transportation breed poverty.

Book excerpt: In recent years the death penalty has sharply declined across Africa, but this trend belies actual public opinion and the retributivist sentiments held by political elites. This study explains capital punishment in Africa in terms of culturally specific notions of life and death as well as the colonial-era imposition of criminal and penal policy.

Book excerpt: Gender, Separatist Politics, and Embodied Nationalism in Cameroon illuminates how issues of ideal womanhood shaped the Anglophone Cameroonian nationalist movement in the first decade of independence in Cameroon, a west-central African country. Drawing upon history, political science, gender studies, and feminist epistemologies, the book examines how formally educated women sought to protect the cultural values and the self-determination of the Anglophone Cameroonian state as Francophone Cameroon prepared to dismantle the federal republic. The book defines and uses the concept of embodied nationalism to illustrate the political importance of women’s everyday behavior—the clothes they wore, the foods they cooked, whether they gossiped, and their deference to their husbands. The result, in this fascinating approach, reveals that West Cameroon, which included English-speaking areas, was a progressive and autonomous nation. The author’s sources include oral interviews and archival records such as women’s newspaper advice columns, Cameroon’s first cooking book, and the first novel published by an Anglophone Cameroonian woman.

The advantages of growing cocoa in cleared primary forest drive from the fertility of virgin soils and low concentrations of weeds, pests and diseases. The consequent emergence of new 'pioneer fronts' has also been affected by cheap labour, relative commodity prices, pests and diseases, credit resources, entrepreneurship, information, physical infrastructures, and government policies. The dynamism of smallholdings and competitive private marketing over estates and marketing boards is demonstrated.
