Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control Mechanisms in Developmental Processes covers the proceedings of the 1967 26th Symposium of The Society for Developmental Biology, held in La Jolla, California. This book is divided into three parts encompassing 10 chapters that summarize the role of cytoplasmic units and the nucleus in developmental processes and the regulatory mechanisms. The opening part of the book describes the chemical changes during the development of plastids in leaves of higher plants. The book goes on discussing the nuclear and cytoplasmic controls in Neurospora morphology. This compilation also examines the aspects of development, growth, and control in the basal bodies and flagella of Chlamydomonas reinhardii. The second part describes genetic systems in plants that serve to initiate or program the sequence in plant development and the life cycle of hybrids between somatic cells of different species. A chapter discusses the genetic basis of higher plant morphogenesis by analysis of the differences between genotypes that differ from each other with respect to a single gene having a pronounced and highly specific effect upon form. A discussion on the activation of protein synthesis upon fertilization and early development of animal eggs to the biochemical basis of the determination process is also included. The concluding part deals with the differentiation of erythroid cells; the induction of hemoglobin synthesis; the regulation of heme and globin synthesis; and the role of heme in the synthesis and assembly of hemoglobin. This part also describes the differentiation of cells to the point where they can perform the various types of immunological reactions. This book is an invaluable source for developmental biologists and researchers.

Book excerpt: The real Hans Spemann, German embryologist (1869-1941), developed a concept of embryonic induction through his experiments on early amphibian embryos which demonstrated neural induction by the primary organizer and evocation of the lens by the optic vesicle. For his discovery of the “organizer” he was awarded the Nobel Peace in Physiology and Medicine in 1935, while he was Professor of Zoology at Freiburg, Germany. In the twenties and early thirties Spemann's laboratory was a mecca for students and investigators entering the new field of experimental embryology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The progressive changes which occur during the life history of an individual metazoon are summed up under the term development. The adult multicellular organism differs from its early developmental stages by its size, shape, proportions, and by its parts having gradually acquired different structural and functional properties. Accordingly, several main processes involved in development, whose classification is a matter of convention, may be delimitated. Differentiation is considered one of the most important of them. In the broader sense of the word, the term differentiation is used for describing transformations, through which heterogeneity-at all levels (macroscopic, microscopic, submicroscopic)-arises or increases. The basic component of the wider phenomenon of differentiation is differentiation of cells, so-called cytodifferentiation. What is cytodifferentiation? In the course of ontogeny, the cells, starting with the fertilized ovum, via the blastomeres of the segmenting ovum and the germ layer cells, right to the differentiating and fully differentiated cells of tissues and organs, gradually acquire new properties which make them different both from a morphological and functional point of view. All changes involved in this process come under the term cytodifferentiation. Differentiation of cells (though not of all kinds of cells) continues throughout the entire life of the individual, but reaches its maximum at the embryonic period when it becomes the chief feature of development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal Physiology is the essential core text for all those studying physiology or zoology. The advances that have taken place in the field of physiology during the last four to five decades are spectacular. The field of animal physiology extends the tools and methods of human physiology to non-human animal species. Plant physiology also borrows techniques from both fields. Its scope of subjects is at least as diverse as the tree of life itself. Due to this diversity of subjects, research in animal physiology tends to concentrate on understanding how physiological traits changed throughout the evolutionary history of animals. Biochemistry, sometimes called biological chemistry, is the study of chemical processes within and relating to living organisms. By controlling information flow through biochemical signaling and the flow of chemical energy through metabolism, biochemical processes give rise to the complexity of life. Over the last decades of the 20th century, biochemistry has become so successful at explaining living processes that now almost all areas of the life sciences from botany to medicine to genetics are engaged in biochemical research. Animal Biochemistry is a sub branch. Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes of living organisms and it deals with the function and structure of cellular components such as lipids carbohydrates proteins nucleic acids and other biomolecules. This valuable book illustrates the individual organization as well as the collective interdependence of each complete physiological system. This book provides the rich information resources needed to the students who seek their career in animal health and sciences.
