Book excerpt: ACROSS THE SEAS... The twists and turns that outside forces and personal choices produce propel this adventure from the Gulf of Mexico to the North Atlantic. Young veterinarian, Kerry Allen, grapples with the effects of her lover, Sheriff Frank Borth, taking an irresistible assignment before their wedding. Both lovers face unforeseen dangers that finally force Kerry to leave her clinic to escort a terrified cocker spaniel to its wealthy owner. She is also trapped in the company of a man who is surely making trouble, but his next target is unclear. Her path leads Kerry deeper into danger and the discovery of a murder. As the investigation continues, Kerry savors a taste of life at sea. An overeating psychologist, a gossipy hypochondriac, an art collector, financial expert and a budding jazz singer with a disapproving mother enliven her dinner table. She also attracts the attention of a Jordanian man with movie-star good looks who is wealthy and probably married. In The Biloxi Traveler, tales of exotic places contrast with folklore, the hometown warmth of Biloxi and the colorful, fun-loving people of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover more about Biloxi’s proud history as a maritime marvel and leader in America’s seafood industry. Predating even colonial America, Biloxi was established for its welcoming gulf shore both a home for traders and a beacon for explorers of the mainland. Geography made Biloxi a historic maritime hub of trade and travel; the seafood industry made it a vibrant, thriving community. Thanks to the efforts of a variety of diverse ethnic groups, Biloxi was dubbed the “Seafood Capital of the World” at the turn of the century. By the 1920s, there were more than forty seafood factories occupying two bustling cannery districts. Cajuns with deep ties to the region, industrious Croatian immigrants and hardworking Vietnamese émigrés all contributed to Biloxi’s seafood industry. Through the Civil War, devastating hurricanes and shifting economies, these hard-fishing families have endured, building Biloxi and forming its character.

Book excerpt: This is the dramatic and inspirational first-person story of theoretical physicist, Dr. Ronald Mallett, who recently discovered the basic equations for a working time machine that he believes can be used as a transport vehicle to the past. Combining elements of Rocket Boys and Elegant Universe, Time Traveler follows Mallett's discovery of Einstein's work on space-time, his study of Godel's work on a solution of Einstein's equation that might allow for time travel, and his own research in theoretical physics spanning thirty years that culminated in his recent discovery of the effects of circulating laser light and its application to time travel. The foundation for Mallett's historic time-travel work is Einstein's theory of general relativity, a sound platform for any physicist. Through his years of reading and studying Einstein, Mallett became a buff well before he had any notion of the importance of the grand old relativist's theories to his own career. One interesting subtext to the story is Mallett's identification with, and keen interest in, Einstein. Mallett provides easy-to-understand explanations of the famous physicist's seminal work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From ancient metropolises like Pueblo Bonito and Tenochtitlán to the twenty-first century Oceti Sakowin encampment of NoDAPL water protectors, Native people have built and lived in cities—a fact little noted in either urban or Indigenous histories. By foregrounding Indigenous peoples as city makers and city dwellers, as agents and subjects of urbanization, the essays in this volume simultaneously highlight the impact of Indigenous people on urban places and the effects of urbanism on Indigenous people and politics. The authors—Native and non-Native, anthropologists and geographers as well as historians—use the term “Indian cities” to represent collective urban spaces established and regulated by a range of institutions, organizations, churches, and businesses. These urban institutions have strengthened tribal and intertribal identities, creating new forms of shared experience and giving rise to new practices of Indigeneity. Some of the essays in this volume explore Native participation in everyday economic activities, whether in the commerce of colonial Charleston or in the early development of New Orleans. Others show how Native Americans became entwined in the symbolism associated with Niagara Falls and Washington, D.C., with dramatically different consequences for Native and non-Native perspectives. Still others describe the roles local Indigenous community groups have played in building urban Native American communities, from Dallas to Winnipeg. All the contributions to this volume show how, from colonial times to the present day, Indigenous people have shaped and been shaped by urban spaces. Collectively they demonstrate that urban history and Indigenous history are incomplete without each other.

Book excerpt: Explorations and journeys of such an extent as in other and older lands would have excited praise and merited reward have been so frequent in this continent as to pass almost unnoticed. Hence the scope of this modest volume is necessarily confined to explorations of great importance or peculiar interest, and when made by men of American birth who are no longer living.
