In a fascinating look into the economics of American Protestantism, James Hudnut-Beumler examines how churches have raised and spent money from colonial times to the present and considers what these practices say about both religion and American culture. After the constitutional separation of church and state was put in force, Hudnut-Beumler explains, clergy salaries had to be collected exclusively from the congregation without recourse to public funds. In adapting to this change, Protestants forged a new model that came to be followed in one way or another by virtually all religious organizations in the country. This book is a compilation of all the articles I have written from June 2002 through October 2017. Each story is a memory - my memories as a child, my parents and where I was raised, my husband and me, our children and grandchildren and the vacation trips I have taken. These memories are the basis for my reflections, thoughts, and ideas on service to God, church, family, and community. Every month I wrote an article on stewardship because our love and service to God must be throughout the entire year, not just one month or one season in particular.
